Is Magdalena frilly?

The title says it all.

I’m a lifelong [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] lover, but I’m trying to avoid frilly or feminissima names as they’re not my cup of tea. I’m not really looking for opinions on the name itself.

I associate frilly with different kind of names, but [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] is definitely feminissima name.

I love [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] too, but I wouldn’t say it was frilly. I think the stronger sounds of ‘magda’ make it less so.

I tend to see frilly/feminissima* names as ones that have added and often times repeated letters, are quite lengthy, and have a really soft/light/airy sound or feel to them (for example [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Annabella[/name_f]) so no, I wouldn’t consider [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] ‘frilly’ as while she is lengthy, she’s heavier and more grounded. Honestly though, I think [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] could probably swing both ways, depending on how different people define/see ‘frilly’ and what other names it’s surrounded by.

I like frilly names in different contexts myself, and though the frillier types aren’t typically my style, I’ve got a few exceptions here and there on my lists. I do wonder…you say that you try to avoid frilly/feminissima names, but you adore your [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], so what does it matter if she is considered frilly by some, if you love her regardless? Can she not just be a one-off on your ‘avoid frill’ list? It’d be a pity to let a long time love go, for the sake of wanting to stay strictly inside a particular parameter.

*I had to look up what feminissima meant, to be honest, as I’ve never seen that term used before. I tend to just use ‘frilly’ or ‘overly/extremely frilly’ I guess…

[name_m]Long[/name_m] and feminine, but not “frilly” in my book. [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] has some quite strong, clunky sounds (that -gd- consonant cluster) and it doesn’t feel overly embellished in the way that names like [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Mariella[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosabelle[/name_f] can.

I agree with pp that the heavy [name_f]Magda[/name_f]- sound keeps [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] from being too frilly. I think it would also depend on your nickname choices, though. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Madge[/name_f] are much clunkier than feminine [name_f]Lena[/name_f].

For me I think its frilly. For the reasons that it’s long, and has an “a” at the end of it (this is not the case for every name, but my mind instantly thinks “girly” when a name has an “a” ending).

I think [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] could be an alternative?

Not at all. To me, its a normal name, beautiful and long. For me its the version of [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] in spanish, but adding an a does not make it frilly.

It is definitely not frilly. However, it is long enough that she would definitely eventually go by a nickname.

Thanks everyone! I don’t mind girly names as long as they’re not too princessy. I do love the simple [name_f]Magda[/name_f] as well, it’s one of my top names.

I like [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] and agree that it’s a strong name. I would not think of it as frilly, but I do see it as quite feminine.
