DH and I are ready to name our daughter due in [name]March[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] but everyone’s saying “I thought you would go with something more stylish!” ?!?!?! I chose [name]Margaret[/name] because I thought it was classy, graceful, and it honored my grandmother, [name]Peggy[/name]. Should I stick with [name]Margaret[/name]? Or should I go with something more “stylish?” Can you give me some classy names? By classy I mean elegant, graceful, stylish, and timeless.
[name]Margaret[/name] is VERY stylish. Like, classic LV bag stylish. Yes, it’s not trendy or surprising, but that’s SO much better than something made up. Also, nickname possibilities are endless: [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Mags[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Peggy[/name] (It has a certain charm to me)
No, no, no! PLEASE STAY WITH [name]MARGARET[/name]. It’s such a beautiful name, and has been one of my favorites for a really long time. I love the nicknames [name]Maggie[/name] and [name]Peggy[/name] too. [name]Margaret[/name] IS elegant, graceful, stylish, timeless, and classy. I would love to see some little girls named [name]Margaret[/name]. Please, please, pleeeease stay with [name]Margaret[/name]—it is too pretty to be forgotten!
I think that [name]Margaret[/name] is fabulous and provides a ton of stylish nicknames. Different versions of [name]Margaret[/name] include [name]Marguerite[/name], [name]Margarita[/name], and [name]Margot[/name] - maybe one of these will work better for you!
[name]Margaret[/name] is nice way to honor your grandmother. Ignore those people (especially if by stylish they really mean trendy).
For elegant, graceful, stylish, timeless:
[name]Margaret[/name]-my favorite because of the connection to your grandmother
[name]Elizabeth[/name]-epitome of what your seeking in a name
[name]Audrey[/name]-because it makes me think of [name]Audrey[/name] Hepburn
[name]Marguerite[/name]-[name]Marguerite[/name] [name]Henry[/name], author of [name]Misty[/name] of Chincoteague, classic book
[name]Delilah[/name]-though not so much in the elegant category, it is the other three and one of the most feminine names there is
I think margaret is a bot dated, but it also has that spunky sound to it (it’s alwas made me think of a very flower child). but her are some “stylish” choices that you may like as well, or maybe even a little bit better.
eleanor/eleanora “ellie/elle/nora”
veronica
victoria “[name]Vicky[/name]/tori/vic”
evelyn “eve/evie”
evangeline “evan/angie”
[name]Catherine[/name] “[name]Cathy[/name]/[name]Cat[/name]/ryn”
elizabeth “liz/libby/betta/beth/eliza”
sophie/sophia
vivienne “vi”

[name]Margaret[/name] is a beautiful, classic name- one I wish I had. Like [name]Elizabeth[/name], the nicknames are endless. [name]Meg[/name] and [name]Meggie[/name] are spunky, [name]Maggie[/name] is cute, [name]Greta[/name] is exotic…
If there were a “like” button for this thread, I would click it. [name]Margaret[/name] is one of my TOP choices, too! It honors my grandmother, and I agree-- it’s classy and graceful and timeless! Congrats on your upcoming birth!
[name]Margaret[/name] is a very classy name. I slightly prefer [name]Marguerite[/name] but [name]Margaret[/name] is beautiful too. Maybe these people are surprised you didn’t pick something “trendy” because [name]Margaret[/name] is very stylish
[name]Don[/name]'t listen!!! [name]Margaret[/name] is GORGEOUS (and stylish!) and has amazing nn potential. I agree with pps that instead of “stylish” these people really mean “trendy.” Or rather, they think they mean stylish, but they’re taken in by all the trends out there and think that’s what a stylish name is. Ugh. I only know one [name]Margaret[/name] and she is older (6 maybe?). Such a classy, timeless name. These are swoon names for me – [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] (despite popularity), [name]Elisabeth[/name], [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Sarah[/name]. And so unusual nowadays, at least with the kids I know. The best of everything.
Boring to me is neutral, names you don’t even think about. A truly boring name would not engender the “REALLY…?!” reaction you are getting. A boring name gets “oh…” or “oh, how funny, my cousin just had one and so did my neighbour!”
I really dislike [name]Margaret[/name], but I wouldn’t call it boring. To me, [name]Emma[/name] is boring… [name]Margaret[/name] is ugly. Or, if you’re a fan, clunky cute. It can’t be boring because hardly any baby Margarets are being born. Personally, I’m a fan of clunky-cute-to-me, ugly-to-most-people [name]Rosamund[/name]. (just an example) [name]Rosamund[/name] is HATED by many people, but I wouldn’t call it boring. I know plenty of people would give it exactly the same “…REALLY?” as [name]Margaret[/name] so it’s purely a personal taste that find it attractive enough to just deal with other people finding it unattractive/old-fashioned/clunky/harsh/whatever.
[name]Do[/name] you love [name]Margaret[/name] even if many people don’t? That’s the real test to me. That and if it becomes more popular in 15 years, will you kick yourself for not using it? Or will you lose interest if other people start using it? There’s nothing unusable about it, as a name.
To me classy and stylish aren’t the same thing anyway. [name]Caroline[/name] has an air of polish and class, to my ear. It’s not terribly in style. I love it even though its not stylish.
Other ideas:
[name]Catherine[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name] - though popularity has taken the class off of [name]Emmy[/name]/[name]Emma[/name] for me.
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Miranda[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] is classic and beautiful! Lots of nickname options as well; love [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Maisy[/name], and [name]Daisy[/name]!
