Is Maya trendy?

My hubs and I are having trouble agreeing on a name that we both love. We have stumbled upon [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and it is growing on both of us. I told a friend of mine today that we were considering it and she said that she thought it was super trendy. I don’t mind common, but I don’t want something in the trendy category. We tend to like classic names and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] has a different feel than the others.

I would choose [name_f]Jane[/name_f], but my hubs is veto-ing it.

We like [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and [name_f]Norah[/name_f] but none of them are sticking with us.

Any suggestions? Thoughts on [name_f]Maya[/name_f]?

Thanks, ladies!

!0 years ago [name_f]Maya[/name_f] was ranked #272 on the SSA list and is now at #63, so I would say it’s definitely popular and could rise since 2 syl. girls names ending in a are a trend.

It has a longer history of use so it’s definitely grounded in use, but it does feel “on trend” if not trendy per se. I’d say [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are much more true classics (even though [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f] in particular are also quite popular), [name_f]Norah[/name_f] is somewhere between those three and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] ([name_f]Nora[/name_f] without the H is more classic), more classic and less on trend, and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is definitely the closest to trendy - but it’s still not where [name_u]Madison[/name_u] was 5-10 years ago or anything like that.

I wouldn’t call [name_f]Maya[/name_f] trendy. [name_m]Just[/name_m] popular. I like it! It feels so versatile yet still very pretty. I also like the Greek spelling, [name_f]Maia[/name_f].

I think it’s on-trend, but maybe not outright trendy. [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora/name_f are pretty popular at the moment, too, I hear them everywhere. [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is nowhere near as classic as the other names you mentioned, though, it’s definitely the odd one out on your list.

I absolutely love [name_f]Maya[/name_f]! I only know one (around 20). Have you read the children’s book [name_f]Journey[/name_f] to the [name_u]River[/name_u] Sea? It made me fall head over heels in love with [name_f]Maia[/name_f]/[name_f]Maya[/name_f] when I read it, and the love has stuck with me!
If you love [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f], WDYT of [name_f]Clara[/name_f]? I adore [name_f]Clara[/name_f] - and it’s very underused. It makes me think of the lovely girl in [name_f]Heidi[/name_f]. Best of luck!

I like [name_f]Maya[/name_f]!! You should use it… I also like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] (no h).

I love the name and dislike the [name_f]Maya[/name_f] spelling. I don’t find it trendy. I dislike [name_f]Maya[/name_f] because I keep trying to say may-ah and I’m certain other people would. I love the [name_f]Maia[/name_f] spelling, the original spelling. But no, I don’t find [name_f]Maia[/name_f] trendy. She has a lot of history.

In Greek mythology she’s one of the Pleiades and the mother of [name_m]Hermes[/name_m]. She’s the daughter of [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. [name_f]Maia[/name_f] also relates to a word used an an honorific for women and her name can mean midwife.

In [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology, [name_f]Maia[/name_f] embodied growth. In some times she was related to [name_f]Earth[/name_f].

And of course it’s the fourth brightest star in the Pleiades. She’s a blue giant.

That’s the long way of saying there’s too much history there for me to ever think of [name_f]Maia[/name_f] as trendy, even with the [name_f]Maya[/name_f] spelling. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is popular. No, [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is not trendy. A lot of people tend to confuse popular for trendy. Not all popular names are trendy and not all trendy names are top 100 popular.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] first appeared on the charts in 1970 and has slowly risen since then. It took a few big leaps around 1975 and 1990 but yeah, popular, not trendy.

I like both [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. You can also spell it like [name_f]Maja[/name_f]. It’s most used that way here in Scandinavia. If you want some other options it’s not that unusual in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] to use [name_f]Meya[/name_f] or Meja. It has an even more appealing sound, in my opinion (and language).

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] is my daughter’s name so of course I love it! No one mispronounces it. It’s popular, but not so popular where we run into them often. I don’t know many [name_f]Maya[/name_f]'s at all, and we always get compliments on her name  I also love classic names. My son’s name is [name_u]James[/name_u].
