I really like [name]Merida[/name]. It fits with my other quirky girls’ names like [name]Ksenia[/name] and [name]Rowena[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think it is usable? Not now, but in 5-10 years. Are the connections to Disney too strong, or will they fade over time? [name]Do[/name] you think it will become really popular?
I think so if there are little girls named [name]Belle[/name] and [name]Arial[/name] then why not [name]Merida[/name]… Yes there is a Disney connection but but that’s ok
I go back and forth on this one. Unlike the names [name]Tiana[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], and [name]Arielle[/name], I have never heard the name on real person. But unlike [name]Cinderella[/name], [name]Rapunzel[/name], Mulan, etc…[name]Merida[/name] seems much tamer and more usable, and as far as I know doesn’t have any major folk-lore or historical connections. I would say that in a few years, it will be usable - but people will probably associate it with the princess and make comments here and there, but I wouldn’t expect a lot of teasing or eye rolls from it.
Although it’s not my type of name, it definitely isn’t along the lines of [name]Rapunzel[/name] and [name]Cinderella[/name]. I feel like right now, Brave makes the name ‘unusable’ but give it a few years and I think [name]Merida[/name] will become a strong-sounding hidden gem.
I don’t think the tie is that strong actually. I have actually asked people this, and they didn’t remember the characters name was [name]Merida[/name]. It not the biggest Disney movie, and I think the ties are very weak. Especially in 5-10 years.
This in my top name lists, and I would definitely consider it usable.
Yay! [name]Glad[/name] to hear! I don’t mind the place name connection at all. There are some very lovely and popular place names like [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Siena[/name], etc.
The names that have sprung up from Disney movies often have to due with current name trends and how common the name currently is.
[name]Jasmine[/name] was already in the top 50 when [name]Aladdin[/name] released. It’s longevity was probably due to the movie, but the connection was mostly negated. [name]Ariel[/name] still has stronger ties with The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid, but while it definitely peaked when it was released, [name]Ariel[/name] had a history as a given name in [name]America[/name].
On the other hand, [name]Belle[/name] still has stayed off the list. But the name is associated with so many other things (as a nickname, [name]Isabella[/name] and the other rising -belle/-bella names, southern beauty, etc.) than just the movie.
Anyhow, I do think [name]Merida[/name] will be useable in a few years. It’s not the kind of Disney movie that will be considered a classic [name]IMO[/name] (i.e. [name]Nala[/name] and [name]Nemo[/name] are so associated with Disney it would be hard to pull either of them off), and even now people are forgetting the main character’s name. In seven years, some may think when they see a little girl [name]Merida[/name], “Wasn’t that the character of a Disney Movie? What a great namesake!” But it’s definitely not like [name]Cinderella[/name] or Mulan.
I love the name [name]Merida[/name], it’s very pretty! I think that while it has a Disney assocation, it’s not necessarily a bad one. Go for it!
