Is Oscar still too much of a grouch?

My husband and I are expecting our third child in [name_f]May[/name_f], a brother for [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. We are having a very difficult time narrowing in on the right name. Right now, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is the current front runner, but I still have some doubts.
1.My brother had a dog named [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] that was a rescue.
2. That everyone’s initial reaction will be, “Like the grouch?”
3. That it doesn’t fit with our other children’s names.

The middle name will probably be [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. The name I had liked was [name_m]George[/name_m] but husband said no. He liked [name_m]Mattias[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], and [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. We both kind of liked [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but it seems too matchy with our last name and is super popular in our area.
Any suggestions? Am I over analyzing?
Thanks for you help!

For me, it’s too much of a weiner…

[name_f]Adore[/name_f] [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]!!!
It seems you love it too. People have opinions and associations with any name really. I think Oscar is adorable. Go with what you love…

Meh. This is my step-father’s name and he has gotten nothing but grouch comments…and he is in his 60s! He was named after his father, so had some special meaning behind the name, but got teased mercilessly (unrelated to the grouch…the name was just soooooo different around here). He made all of us promise that we would, under no circumstances, ever ever ever ever bestow his name on any of our future children. Maybe others would feel differently, but I’ve seen him deal with this for all of my life and find it sad that one could possibly despise his name so much. So honestly, I’d pass on it. If you have doubts, I think those should be given attention. You aren’t over-analyzing it at all…he will have to wear this name for the rest of his life.

I really like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]! Unfortunately it is very popular where I live (a top ten name). Never heard the grouch (I had to Google what it was).

I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] goes well with [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

I also love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], but then I’m also in the UK where it’s a top 10 choice and has been for many years. I think it’s lovely and classic without being fusty and therefore goes really well with your other kids’ names. I think it will make a comeback in the US too eventually, so you’d be a trailblazer

[name_m]Just[/name_m] met a little boy [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] which I thought was cute!

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is definitely not too much of a grouch! It is a cool and handsome name. Somewhat “hipster” but it also has history of use so it still makes it solid. I think it works just fine with your others! I think [name_m]George[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] “fit” more with your other names but [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] works just fine and I wouldn’t bat an eye if I saw your sibset. People rarely see the whole sibset of names together anyways so don’t put too much weight on that!

My husband has said that he would call him [name_m]Oz[/name_m] or [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m]. I’m not a nickname person so I would stick with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m].

I think it works. As the UK residents have said, it’s a very popular choice there. The US tends to be a bit behind the times. :stuck_out_tongue:

I love it, personally.

I’ve only met one [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], who was a young boy around 3 or 4. He was the cutest thing ever and I adored his name. I also think it goes quite well with the other two. [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] just rolls off my tongue.

As someone that knows a little boy named [name_m]Kermit[/name_m], I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is ready to lose it’s grouchy past.

It’s definitely useable again.

1.My brother had a dog named [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] that was a rescue.
“Had” being the important tense here. It’s ok.

2. That everyone’s initial reaction will be, “Like the grouch?”
Probably will have this - but only from people who don’t know their manners and would have comments about any name you choose. They may say “like the grouch” to clarify though as that’s the only reference they have for [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. You could reply “yes, and also like the Oscars at the Academy Awards!” and be done with it.

3. That it doesn’t fit with our other children’s names.
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] sound great together!

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is a bit O heavy, but it works. I like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] too.

I like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] a lot! He’s one of those names that’s been a lifelong favorite, even though he’s not on my name list at the moment. I actually think [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] are stunning together. I don’t know how much people will think of your brother’s dog, but I’ve rarely associated [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] with the Grouch, but I could be in the minority there. I more think of [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] Schindler, and this adorable little boy named [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] that was a cousin of some family friends. (Plus, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde!) I would love to meet a little [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. I think it’s a brilliant name.

Your other options are lovely–I particularly love [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], and [name_m]Mattias[/name_m]/[name_m]Matthias[/name_m]–but I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]'s a real winner, if that’s the one you can agree on (I think [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], and [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] are equally winners, but since [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is the common-ground name, it seems like a really great option for you).

Good luck!

I like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], unless you call your daughter [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is actually on my list of potential dog names, I love it, but it would depend on your last name. If it’s a straightforward name then I’d say it would pair well. (Example: I love how [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Issac[/name_m] sounds)

I love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]! I definitely think it’s losing the ‘grouch’ association. To me it’s a friendly, comfy name. I think it would go wonderfully with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]

My brother is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and never really got the Grouch thing. Occasionally by me or one of his siblings to tease him but he wasn’t fazed at all by it.

He’s known affectionately by us as Oscy, but mostly he’s [name_m]Oscar[/name_m].

I love it. I’d love to use it as a name for one of our kiddies but he firmly disagreed. He said [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] was his name and he liked being the only one he knew of. Lol! Stubborn git! He loves being called [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] though.
