Is our choice too "dusty?"

We are expecting our fourth boy next month. We already have a [name]Luke[/name], [name]Greyson[/name] ([name]Grey[/name]), and [name]Jude[/name]. We are having a very difficult time agreeing on a name this time.

I originally wanted to stick with the four letter theme. Jokingly I suggested [name]Fred[/name], but now we both love it. While I would like to just name him [name]Fred[/name], my husband insists on [name]Frederic[/name] or some variant with [name]Fred[/name] as the nn. I am not sure how I feel about [name]Frederic[/name]. So a couple questions: [name]How[/name] do you feel about [name]Fred[/name]? Can it stand alone? Is [name]Frederic[/name] too old and stuffy? And how does [name]Fred[/name] sound with our boys? I think it sounds out of place, but I don’t know how important that really is to us at this point.

Our other top choices are [name]August[/name] and [name]Leo[/name]. Husband’s least favorite is [name]Leo[/name], but I love it. [name]Do[/name] you prefer one of these? [name]Do[/name] these “go” better with [name]Luke[/name], [name]Grey[/name] and [name]Jude[/name]?

Sorry not a fan of just [name]Fred[/name]…[name]Frederic[/name] is ok…but I feel like he might not love it growing up. I think [name]August[/name] goes really well with your other names…Auggie is a really cute nickname on a little boy.

I really like [name]Fred[/name], I think it can totally stand alone. It would be a perfect edition to your other boys. A similar name I adore is [name]Frank[/name].

What about [name]Alfred[/name]?

I think [name]Fred[/name] is so cute!! I think this is one of those names that feels modern all over again - retro feel is the term I guess.

I like [name]Frederic[/name].

I was considering [name]Frederick[/name] for my son. It’s a family name but also appealed to me because it’s classic enough that everyone’s heard of it, but it isn’t over-used these days. I decided not to use it because [name]Fred[/name] is my uncle’s name and I thought it would be a lot of “which [name]Fred[/name] are you talking about?” and because my grandmother made it very clear she’d want to call him [name]Rick[/name], which I really dislike.

At any rate there are a lot of names that I’d consider more old-fashioned that are back on the rise. Since you say you both love it, I’d say go for it. I don’t think it sounds out of place with his brothers.

I think [name]Frederic[/name] goes a lot better with your other boys’ names then just [name]Fred[/name]. And I don’t think [name]Frederic[/name] sounds stuffy, I think it sounds dignified and will age better then just [name]Fred[/name].

I like [name]Frederic[/name]. [name]Deric[/name] could also be a nickname possibility.

I like just [name]Fred[/name], though I also prefer [name]Alfred[/name] for a longer version.

What about [name]Frederic[/name] with nn [name]Dirk[/name]?

[name]Dirk[/name] sounds great with [name]Luke[/name], [name]Grey[/name], and [name]Jude[/name]

[name]Fred[/name] is wonderful
It’s the Norwegian word for ‘peace’.

I’m not too fond of [name]Frederic[/name], [name]Fred[/name] has more charm, and I really like [name]Fred[/name] with your other boys names.
[name]Alfred[/name] is a nice alternative if you feel like you really need something longer. With [name]Luke[/name] and [name]Jude[/name], just [name]Fred[/name] doesn’t seem out of place at all ^^

All three names are good. I would go with [name]Frederic/name rather than just [name]Fred[/name]. I have two friends whose given names are [name]Jimmy[/name], not [name]James[/name]. This has been quite a hassle with respect to officialdom.

Well, [name]Leo[/name] is one of my favorite names ever, so if you decide to ditch the 4 letter theme, I like. It fits with the cool vibe of the older three.

I’m sort of on the fence about [name]Frederic[/name]/[name]Fred[/name] and, for that matter, [name]August[/name]/[name]Gus[/name]. Personally, I’m not overly fond of either of the formal versions, but they are classic names. But given that, I think there’s another problem—your other three names don’t have a classic formal version/nn pair. [name]Fred[/name] and [name]Gus[/name] are names that, 15 years ago, were grampa-ish, so far out names, that I’d never have thought I’d like them, but they have both grown on me. I blame J.K. Rowling for [name]Fred[/name]—who could resist the Weasley twins?

If you want to stick to the 4 letter theme…what about…

[name]Zane[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Adam[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Reed[/name] (I like it with [name]Greyson[/name]; not sure how it works with the whole set)

I love [name]Fred[/name], whether as a short form of [name]Frederic[/name]/k or [name]Alfred[/name], or on it’s own! I’m not sure it goes extremely well with your other boys, but it doesn’t feel “wrong” either, if that makes sense. [name]Freddy[/name] seems like it would sound better as a nn with the others. I really, really like pp suggestion of [name]Reed[/name]. [name]Reed[/name] just sounds like he fits right in!

I think [name]Fred[/name] is a little mismatched with your other boys. But if you decide you like it, I’d go with [name]Frederick[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name]…because then you have two boys with a formal name and nn…[name]Greyson[/name] won’t be the odd one out.

Other 4 letter names (or four letter nns):
[name]Noah[/name]
[name]Nathan[/name] nn [name]Nate[/name]
[name]Cole[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
[name]Jacob[/name] nn [name]Jake[/name]
[name]Kyle[/name]
[name]Zachary[/name] nn [name]Zack[/name]
[name]Matthew[/name] nn [name]Matt[/name]
[name]Nicholas[/name] nn [name]Nick[/name]
[name]William[/name] nn [name]Will[/name] or [name]Liam[/name]
[name]Michael[/name] nn [name]Mike[/name]
[name]Ryan[/name]

I won’t reject [name]Frederick[/name] out of hand for being too dusty, but I think it’s definitely fustier than brothers [name]Luke[/name], [name]Grey[/name] and [name]Jude[/name]. The brothers all have much more fashionable names and I think [name]Fred[/name] doesn’t quite fit. [name]August[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] are more natural choices. Which is too bad since I would love to meet a little [name]Freddie[/name]!

Something else 1-syllable and classic-modern:

[name]Marc[/name]
[name]Paul[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Judd[/name]
[name]Kent[/name]
[name]Penn[/name]
[name]Reid[/name]
[name]Ross[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Tate[/name]
[name]Wade[/name]
[name]Will[/name]

[name]How[/name] about:

[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]William[/name] - [name]Bill[/name]/[name]Will[/name]
[name]Walter[/name] - [name]Walt[/name]
[name]Louis[/name] (okay not 4 letters…)
[name]Fernando[/name] - [name]Fern[/name]
[name]Jack[/name]
[name]Drew[/name]
[name]Otto[/name]
[name]Gene[/name]

I’d go with a name that’s at least two syllables considering your second son is actually [name]Greyson[/name] and not just [name]Grey[/name]. I like [name]Luke[/name], [name]Greyson[/name], [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] best.

[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Fred[/name], but think [name]August[/name] would go much better with the siblings!
