Is Rio an okay name to name myself if in not hispanic?

I think it’s fine!

I think these comments are mostly from people from countries where someone with a Spanish language name is most likely Latino. Many Latinos where I live (United States) primarily identify as Latino or do not identify as white at all.

(There have been several excellent comments about the relationship between Latino culture and whiteness – very interesting for me to see as I am American with heritage from Central America and Europe, and I have heard a lot of different opinions about how to classify my race.)

I saw that this sparked a bit of a conversation, and after scrolling back through the comments I saw I was the one of the only people who mentioned knowing someone with the name so I just wanna address what I meant so there’s no miscommunication here. I do know that Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race, and Hispanic people can be white, brown, black and anywhere in between. I didn’t mean to insinuate otherwise with my original comment at all. When I said I know someone who is non-Hispanic white, I was just describing what they are specifically, not trying to say that all Hispanics are not white. In fact that’s why I clarified non-Hispanic white rather than just saying they’re white, because I know that you can be white and also be Hispanic so it would not have made sense in this context to just describe them as white without also clarifying that they are not Hispanic and still used the name. In hindsight I could’ve just said they’re non-Hispanic and not even specified their race at all, but I thought it might have been helpful information for the OP to know in this situation.
I hope this explanation clears up and confusion anyone had from my comment!
