Is [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] definitely a surname name, or is it ALSO a classic first name? This is for a BOY. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband doesn’t like surname names (he is from [name_u]Ireland[/name_u] and sees a lot of Irish-American choices as surnames only and weird first name choices) so I want to have enough info on [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] before I fight for it:)
I would definitely consider it an established first name!
I don’t think anyone would hear the name [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and think it’s not a first name. It’s a very popular name and has been for a long time. I went to school with multiple Rowans and I’m in my late 20s. And it’s almost in the top 100 names.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is a first name for me. I’ve heard it more as a first than a surname, it could be considered a nature/word name, and behindthename says it’s the ‘Anglicized form of the [name_u]Irish[/name_u] name Ruadhán. As an [name_f]English[/name_f] name, it can also be derived from the surname [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], itself derived from the [name_u]Irish[/name_u] given name.’
I’ve heard [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] more often as a first name than surname in my own experience (US)!
I think of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as a first name.
Actually many, even most boys names are commonly known as both. I know families with the last name [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_u]Mason[/name_u], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Charles[/name_u], and on and on so I think it just depends on how deep you dig into the surname issue and what you’re comfortable with but for me [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is a first name!
Behind the name site suggests that it is coming from an [name_u]Irish[/name_u] first name or possibly an [name_f]English[/name_f] surname.
I’ve actually never heard [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as a surname! It’s definitely an established first name.
While I’ve heard [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as both, I wouldn’t consider it a surname name. It’s a nature name that happens to be used in both places – like [name_u]Lark[/name_u] or [name_u]Wren[/name_u], for example. I think I’ve heard it more as a first name also.
I’ve met many kids named [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and never thought of it as a surname. Didn’t even know it was one!
I’ve only ever heard it as a first name so I definitely don’t think of it as a “surname name”. I don’t know if I’d think of it as classic though as it’s much more popular for younger people.
I’ve never met or heard of anyone with the last name [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and I think it’s fine. Having a [name_m]Smith[/name_m] or a Rosenblatts might be different though
I definitely think of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as a first name!
I’ve known many people named [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and it’s always been their first name, not a surname!
