Is Ruby too popular?

We’re still deciding between [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] for my baby girl (due early [name]June[/name]), and most berries seem to prefer [name]Ruby[/name]. (My husband slightly prefers [name]Sawyer[/name] but likes both and is leaving it up to me.) But I’m wondering if [name]Ruby[/name] is too popular. Especially in Los [name]Angeles[/name] (or other urban areas). I’m definitely in a “hipster pocket” – my realtor had a baby [name]Ruby[/name] last year. It’s #75 on the SS list for [name]California[/name]. Is [name]Ruby[/name] too popular?

Thanks for your input!

BTW, my short list includes [name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Miller[/name], [name]Arwen[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], and [name]Sailor[/name].

Likely middle names for my top contenders: [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Miller[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Pearl[/name].

Nationally, I think [name]Ruby[/name]'s popularity is waning, or at least flatlining. I don’t live in a hipster enclave, but I’m in a large metropolitan area and have yet to meet a [name]Ruby[/name] under 90. [name]Sawyer[/name] has never been my taste, only because it’s so overwhelmingly used for a boy. [name]Juniper[/name] is one of my loves - it sounds fresh, but it isn’t trendy (yet), and it’s obviously feminine. [name]Miller[/name] is way, way, way too masculine. At least with [name]Sawyer[/name], some might hear it and wonder “boy or girl?” but with [name]Miller[/name], I think she’ll be getting all her mail addressed to “Mr.” her entire life.

[name]Arwen[/name] is very sweet, and I think will carry her into adulthood. I do like [name]Sailor[/name], but wonder if it’s a little too cutesy to make the same transition.

I agree with clover about [name]Ruby[/name]'s popularity.

From your list, I like [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Arwen[/name], and [name]Juniper[/name]. [name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Miller[/name] are way too masculine for a girl, in my opinion. [name]Sailor[/name] just seems childish.

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] would be gorgeous.

Wow, I think we have very similar tastes in names. [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name], and [name]Arwen[/name] are all on my girl’s list. I don’t think [name]Ruby[/name] is too popular yet. I only know one person who has used that name, and his daughter’s name is spelled [name]Rubie[/name] (which I’m not a fan of - I prefer the ‘y’.)

[name]Reading[/name] your list now, though, I am tempted to put [name]Juniper[/name] on mine! I don’t know if it’s too much for my husband to deal with (he’s a bit more conservative than I am), but we can discuss that when it comes down to it (not TTC just yet.)

[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Miller[/name]. 100%. [name]Ruby[/name] might be more popular, but it’s a fabulous name that she can wear all her life and it will remain classic. I feel like [name]Sawyer[/name] is trendy, like it’s today’s [name]McKenzie[/name].

[name]Ruby[/name] is a sweet name. I don’t think it’s too popular unlike some other names. The only [name]Ruby[/name] I know is my mum & she is 50!

Surprisingly I haven’t seen any [name]Ruby[/name]'s yet where I live…but of your list that is definitely my favorite by far

I live in a major urban area and the only [name]Ruby[/name] I know is a 5 year old. I think it’s among the more wearable of your options, but then I do have conservative taste. I like it the best - I somewhat like [name]Arwen[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name]. [name]Miller[/name] I don’t really care for - masculine and the beer association is so strong. [name]Milla[/name] could be a lovely substitute if you like it. [name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Sailor[/name] I feel kind of neutral to.

Best wishes whatever you decide! But if you’re liking [name]Ruby[/name] the best, I say go for it - it’s hardly in the top 10.

I live in southern [name]California[/name] and I’ve met one [name]Ruby[/name] in my entire life and never seen a child with the name.
I think it’s lovely!

I don’t think it’s that popular in US- yet. [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Juniper[/name] are my favorites from your list. I like [name]Sawyer[/name] for a boy.

I don’t know anyone named [name]Ruby[/name] and I definitely prefer it over [name]Sawyer[/name]!

Thanks everyone! [name]One[/name] day I’m all about [name]Ruby[/name], the next I’m all about [name]Sawyer[/name]. I think maybe I might wait to see her before naming. Has anyone done that?

I know my best friend, who had her daughter two months ago, couldn’t decide between two names - so she and her husband waited to see the baby and what she seemed/looked more like. They ended up naming her [name]Anna[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]. I don’t know what the other name was; I think they’re waiting to maybe use that name if they have another girl.
