[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! This is my first time starting my own thread, I hope you can all help.
My husband and I are expecting a little girl, and yesterday, the weirdest thing happened with respect to our name list. At about 10am, I was sitting at my computer at work, and the song “Mellow Yellow” came on, and I thought “Oh, [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], that’s a really nice name, I’ll add it to the list.” It didn’t really trump my favorites so far, but then, that evening, as my husband [name_m]Derek[/name_m] was consulting our spice encyclopedia for dinner, he flips to a page and goes “What about [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]?!”
Everyone at work here thinks it’s a “sign” that we thought of the same name, independently, the same day, but to be honest, it’s not quite in our comfort zone, although I think we both wish we had the guts to use it. The other thing is, our last name sounds like “lip”, so does that rule out names that have to do with flavors? (We have already figured out that it rules out [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], haha).
Our other favorite names so far are: [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], [name_f]Gillian[/name_f], and maybe [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], after my dad [name_u]James[/name_u].
I love [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]. It is unusual (with British flair), not super-frilly, and easily pronounced. I like the nn Saffy as well. I’d say go for it. I don’t see any issue with your last name.
Go for it, I say. I don’t think [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is way out there, although I can see that your other choices are more traditional, but I think [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is just adorable - and it’s a nice story to tell the kid when she’s older about her name.
I don’t think it’s out there at all. I know a couple of Saffrons, and I think it’s a very sweet name - it’s bright and warm and makes me think of summery afternoons. And it’s so cool that you both thought of it on the same day like that! Almost like it was meant to be
I don’t think it’s too out there but I know what you mean about wishing you had the guts to use it. [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is of my favorite names but I’m not sure I would be brave enough either. [name_f]One[/name_f] thing that might help is to think of what you may name future children if you do go with [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]. Would you be comfortable with [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f], or [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] and [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] in the future?
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is a great name but you say it’s out of your comfort zone. Are you going to be able to confidently stand up for [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] when it gets negative feedback? [name_m]Will[/name_m] your feeling be hurt when you get strange looks or mean comments? I’m all for unusual names IF that’s who the parents are. Looking at your list, it is probably too out there for you.
I love [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], and it does seem significant the way the name came to you. It’s gentle and easy to pronounce; not that crazy at all! [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is sweet, too.
I thought about using that name too for our daughter due in December, but I have a son named Sage and thought it might be a little too spicy to match my other kids, Orion, Cerridwen, and Rowan.
I like the story but given your other favorite names, and the prospect of what to name future siblings, I’d relegate it to the middle spot. I think you should use it but I would think about how it might influence your naming style for the rest of your family.
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]. I’d use it myself, except my hubby hates it. What about [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] or [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]?
Thanks everyone–you have all brought up important considerations, and it’s reassuring to hear that most of you don’t think [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is that “out there,” because that is a big part of our reluctance (unfortunately I care too much about what other people think). At least we have another 16 weeks or so to think about it! I do think a more common middle name would help, or using [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] as the middle name itself.
You have convinced me enough to “take it to the hospital” with our other favorite names and see how it feels when we’re holding her. [name_m]Derek[/name_m] doesn’t want to decide until then anyway.
Sorry, I think it’s too out there. Partly because it’s so associated with the spicy, but also because it just doesn’t sound appealling. There is nothing pretty about the name at all.
However, your other choices are darling! I especially love [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and [name_f]Gillian[/name_f].
Go for it, as a first name. Be brave! It is a beautiful, exotic, natural name. We would love to use it ourselves but we won’t because our last name starts with a “N” sound. There are just so many [name_m]Jamies[/name_m] and Gillians and Alices out there. Now [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], that is seriously lovely.
I was gung-ho to encourage you in naming your girl [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] when I first saw your post. As I read your story, I was even more encouraged. Then my hopes were dashed. Sorry but your surname “Lip” would rule it out for me. I wouldn’t want to be called [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] “Lip” (yes, and meet my sisters, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] Lip and [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Lip) :)). If you must use it, put it in the middle spot.
I say go for it. That’s a great story you can tell your daughter of how you both came up with the name ! It’s a lovely name too, unusual and exotic but not threateningly so.
