We’re considering [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] as a possibility for our child who’ll arrive in [name_u]January[/name_u]. I love the name, and my husband really likes it, but I’m worried its too closely associated with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. What do you think?
It is tied to [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but I’d be more concerned about everyone hearing his name and thinking you named your son Serious. You could definitely use it as a middle name though!
@southern.maple Where we live people don’t pronounce [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] and serious the same
I always think of the star when I hear it, not [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I’m not a big fan of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] though and I have always loved astronomy.
Then I’m sure the mistake will never be made. ![]()
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_m]Sirius[/name_m]?
I think of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] immediatly, but that’s were I first heard of the name and I’m a huge potterhead so that’s expected.
I think it’s a wonderful name, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connotations aside. It’s easy to say and spell, it has a long history and many connections. It has this lovely uniquely vintage sound and it’s definitely original but recognizable. I think the meaning is fantastic too- “burning” can have so many good connotations depending on how you pair it.
I’d say go for it. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connections arise, [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] was a fantastic character. And if puns come up, you can always embrace them instead of taking them siriusly (I’m sorry! I’m sorry!)
Huge, huge thumbs up for the name
I associate it with HP…but [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] was my favorite character!
I first heard it as a name of a stuffed animal. I’ve always associated it with a dog, but not in a bad way. I think it’s just fine for a child. I’d actually like to see more children named [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] and things like it.
It’s too tied to radio.
@opheliaflora I pronounce [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] [name_f]Siri[/name_f]-us but I pronounce serious See-ree-us
@boyandgirl Radio?
We have [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] XM here in the States.
The radio should not be a concern.
We also have [name_m]Mac[/name_m] computers with humans called [name_m]Mac[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u]'s and [name_f]JoAnn[/name_f] craft stores with humans called both those things, [name_f]Wendy[/name_f]'s and [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]'s restaurants, [name_f]Delta[/name_f] sinks and airline, and [name_m]Ross[/name_m] stores.
[name_m]Ah[/name_m], okay. I don’t live in the US, so I don’t think that really applies.
The issues that have been brought up are not concerns for you, so I think the vague consensus here is that [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] is usable.
It is a really cool name. I’ve got it on my own list of potential middle names.
It’s a cool name, but to be honest (while I know technically no one pronounces Serious as “sirius”, it is close enough that it just makes me think of people saying “are you sirious??” as a joke. I feel like that may happen. It’s a bit of a meme in my country, but that might not apply for yours. I do like the meaning though. Personally I would consider it as a second name better :).
I think of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] immediately upon hearing [name_m]Sirius[/name_m], but I am a huge Potterhead who spent the better part of her morning reading fanfiction. I also think of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] upon hearing the names [name_m]Harry[/name_m], [name_m]Ron[/name_m], [name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], etc. and that doesn’t stop people from using those names.
I think it is a fantastic name! To me, it’s not too attached to [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] because there are other connections that the name has (astronomy for example), and it’s not a made up name, so it should be fine. =)
