Wondering what you guys think of [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]? It’s a family name on both sides and I’m finding myself very fond of it recently. I don’t see it mentioned on Nameberry that often, which is surprising seeing as it fits in with other trendy vintage names like [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_u]Percy[/name_u] etc. Although it is getting to be quite popular in the UK at 67, I kind of hope that’s still unique enough to probably be the only one in the class (?).
The only real hesitation is the nickname [name_m]Stan[/name_m]. I don’t hate it or anything, but it’s such a contrast from the soft feel of [name_u]Stanley[/name_u], plus I don’t think it really suits a small child. If he grew up to prefer it that would be fine, but I’m just wondering if it’s a given that everyone’s going to call him that from the get-go. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s unavoidable? Similarly, I wouldn’t mind the occasional “Stan”, but it would probably bug me if it was shortened all the time. And is the twitter/Eminem/fan terminology a problem?
I agree [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] feels like it could be up there with [name_u]Clarence[/name_u], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] etc.
It does feel very grandpa to me but I can see the appeal. I didn’t immediately think if Eminem at all but I do think they would inevitably get [name_m]Stan[/name_m]. It’s the most intuitive nickname.
I have an [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and he 99% gets [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and that sort of drives me nuts

Probably yes, but maybe not…

All the Stanleys I have taught in the UK have asked to be called [name_m]Stan[/name_m]. Not sure if it was adults who started it or they decided it themselves but it was common.
Eminem did vaguely cross my mind but not the kids, most of them have never even heard of him.

I’ve come across quite a few Stanleys here in the UK - it’s a cute, vintage name! The ones I’ve met have been just called [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] but I do think he’d get the occasional [name_m]Stan[/name_m]

I like [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]! I know of 2, both in their 20s, one is known as [name_m]Stan[/name_m] and the other is [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]. I think you’ll get the occasional [name_m]Stan[/name_m] but it’s definitely possible to go without a nickname. Similarly I’ve known Christophers, [name_m]Williams[/name_m], etc who have gone by their full name only.

I think its intuitive for most.

I know a father & son named [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]. The dad only goes by [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] and the son by [name_m]Stan[/name_m]. So, no, I don’t think [name_m]Stan[/name_m] would inevitably turn into [name_m]Stan[/name_m]. I also know a [name_u]Madison[/name_u] that has never been a Madi. I think with your persistence he can remain [name_u]Stanley[/name_u].

Realistically, yes. Less intuitive but [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is so much better.

Agree with tfzolghadr. He would probably get called that at some point but you can ask people not use it

I would be shocked if a [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] weren’t called [name_m]Stan[/name_m] at some point in his life. [name_m]Just[/name_m] think, when he’s middle-aged, it will suit.
