This is on behalf of a friend. Her and her husband are expecting their first child, a boy, and they want to name him [name_m]Needham[/name_m] as its her maiden name. She’s a bit worried that he will be teased.
Any nicknames or alternatives would be great.
Thanks
I like pp’s suggestion of [name_m]Ed[/name_m]/[name_m]Ned[/name_m]. Or [name_m]Eddy[/name_m]/[name_m]Eddie[/name_m].
I don’t necessarily think he will be teased, but it could raise some eyebrows. But since nowadays people name their kids things like [name_f]Apple[/name_f], I’m sure he’d be fine.
Personally I think a lot of last names work okay as given names, but this is one I’d avoid. I just see ‘need ham?’ out of it, so it seems a bit odd to call someone on a daily basis.
If used though, [name_m]Ned[/name_m] or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] for a nickname would work.
I agree. My first thought was “oh [name_m]Needham[/name_m] as in Need ham?” [name_m]Just[/name_m] can’t get it out of my head. It could make a good middle name but not a first name.
I love the thought of naming a child the mother’s maiden name, and in most cases I bet it would work fairly well, but I am incapable of seeing anything but Need [name_m]Ham[/name_m] when I look at the name. As a middle it would be great, but I unfortunately don’t think it’ll work as a first
Maybe, to get the sound and avoid the spelling issue of Need-ham, make it look more how it phonetically’s said? Needem, Needum, Needam, Needim, Needom? It’s a bit like [name_u]Tatum[/name_u] in the sense then, and seems a bit more usuable.
I can’t see it as anything other than “need ham”. I like the suggestions of using it as a middle name or spelling it differently. You could also do something like naming him [name_m]Ned[/name_m] [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m], [name_m]Ned[/name_m] [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] etc
I think the idea behind it is nice, but it sounds too much like “I need 'em!” or “I need 'im!” [name_m]Will[/name_m] he be teased? Not sure, but I would probably use it as a middle name. I suppose if they’re set on using it up front, though, [name_m]Ned[/name_m] might be a nice nickname…
I’ve met a lot of people with their mother’s maiden name as their middle name, so that much isn’t weird. As a first name, though? That particular name sounds pretentious and easily tease-able
I’m going to say no to the question, it’s not usable to me. It doesn’t have a pleasant sound, it has potential negative connotations (my first thought was “is the nickname gonna be ‘Needy’?”). I only vaguely recognize it as a last-name-as-first-name due to the suffix -ham. I think this one goes well in the middle name spot. If the mom wants to honor her family, I’d look elsewhere for options!
They should use it as a middle name or if they are set on giving their son this name for his first name then they should just call him as been suggested [name_m]Ned[/name_m] or [name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_m]Eddy[/name_m].
