You may have seen the news… or all over your Facebook… “[name_m]Brock[/name_m] [name_m]Turner[/name_m]” the student who got off with a 6 month sentence for a brutal sexual assault.
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I AM DUE IN TWO AND A HALF WEEKS,
and if we have a son we are going with the name [name_m]Broderick[/name_m] - and I wanted the nickname [name_m]Brock[/name_m]. But NOW obvs I’m rethinking this, since the timing is so bad!!! What do you think??? [name_m]Will[/name_m] people put two and two together, or will they have forgotten by then???
Another nickname that I just thought of that I think is cute… is [name_m]Rocky[/name_m]. WDYT???
Thanks berries.
i don’t think anyone will compare the two. People likely won’t remember the name as much as “that one rapist” and even then this news story won’t stick around forever, it’ll get buried soon enough. Besides I think most people will still first think of [name_m]Brock[/name_m] from Pokemon if they relate it to anyone, or they might possibly mishear it as [name_m]Barack[/name_m], as in [name_m]Obama[/name_m], but that’s still unlikely to happen.
I think you’re safe using it. If you’re really concerned, refer to him by [name_m]Broderick[/name_m] for the first few months until FB is no longer blaring the name everywhere. And if you must, [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] is still a cute nn too.
Wow, I hadn’t heard about that; I hope it takes six months for a heartless person to rot.
Since the full name is [name_m]Broderick[/name_m] then I wouldn’t worry about it as such. You can always just call him [name_m]Broderick[/name_m] to start with for a few weeks and then gauge for yourself how you want to proceed.
I don’t think people will make the association, however I really dislike the nn [name_m]Brock[/name_m] anyway, so my vote is for [name_m]Rocky[/name_m]! [name_m]Brock[/name_m] reminds me of the noise an angry parrot makes!
I think [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] is much cuter.
I don’t think that will taint the name.
I would agree with everyone above … if this was 4 months ago or 4 months later. [name_m]Just[/name_m] too inappropriately timed.
In the long run it will probably be ok, but right now anyone aware of the story will make that association, as unfair as that might seem. [name_m]Broderick[/name_m] also leads to [name_m]Brody[/name_m], which I think is a much nicer nn by far.
You are assuming most people recognize the name. I’m guessing they don’t. Most people will know about “that college swimmer case”.
Yeah, the case is big right now, but I don’t foresee this person being news for long. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like Ebola or the kid that fell into the gorilla enclosure at the zoo… Everyone will be over it soon enough.
I don’t think anyone will compare. I know a child names [name_m]Brock[/name_m] and I wouldn’t even of put the names together at all.
I don’t think it would taint the name for the general public, however, does it taint the name for YOU? That’s the most important question! If so, try [name_m]Brody[/name_m].
Thank you all… it seems the majority thinks it won’t matter, that’s heartening. I know I’m probably just SUPER noticing it because it’s so important to us!!! I grew up in Brockville… so I would hate if the nn was ruined, it has roots for me.
