So the Hubs and I are finally officially TTC (hooray!) and i am anxiously waiting to test at the end of this month. He hasn’t been very forward about names that he likes, so imagine my surprise when he came forward with [name]Theodore[/name], nn [name]Theo[/name]. I immediately loved it, and it flows well with our last name but now that I have my eye on it, it seems [name]EVERY[/name] birth announcement is [name]Theo[/name]/[name]Theodore[/name]. Berries, what do you think? Is this one set to be the next [name]Aiden[/name]?
[name]Theodore[/name] was No# 231 last year in the US (that means only 1,545 boys). [name]Even[/name] though it has gained popularity steadily since 2002, I wouldn’t define it as popular. [name]Theodore[/name] isn’t in the top 100 for your state New Mexico as per the SSA website so I wouldn’t worry about it. If you and your husband love the name and it flows well with your surname, go for it!
It depends on your social circle. There are tons of Theos amongst my friends, but it doesn’t rank that high in general. It’s especially popular amongst the highly educated and affluent, from what I can tell.
I’m in the UK so my opinion probably isn’t the valid but I do think it’s a name that is well loved on this site and that can make a name appear to be popular, when it fact it probably isn’t. The previous poster said it isn’t in the top 100 for your area so the it isn’t that likely you’ll stumble across another one. Are the birth announcements for your area? If so, then you might want to avoid it.
I think it’s climbing the charts- but I doubt it’s going to get too high. Like mischa said, it’s not in the top 100 in New Mexico, so I doubt that it’ll be found too often. I’d also take into consideration the number of baby boys you know, and if their names are [name]Theodore[/name] or [name]Theo[/name]. Personally I adore the name, but if I knew three baby Theodores, I’d have to reconsider.
I agree that I wouldn’t be too worried about it. I do think [name]Theodore[/name] is going to climb quite a bit, but it’s not like [name]Theodore[/name] rhymes with too many things (like [name]Aidan[/name] so unfortunately does–[name]Jayden[/name], [name]Zayden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Rayden[/name], Traiden, [name]Payden[/name]/[name]Peyton[/name], [name]Braden[/name], etc.–a lot of which are also legitimate). Then again, I suppose there could be a [name]Theo[/name]-[name]Leo[/name]-[name]Geo[/name]-[name]Neo[/name]-Deo-[name]Rio[/name]-Vio-etc. thing, but I don’t think it’ll ever be anywhere near as trendy as [name]Aidan[/name]!
[name]LOVE[/name] THIS! I actually had my DH agree to use [name]Theodore[/name] if we were to have another boy. I have yet to meet one. [name]Even[/name] an older [name]Theodore[/name]. I think that anything under the top 100 is a lot less common than we think, especially in certain areas. That certainly plays a big factor. But I also know that I’ve experienced a name popping up everywhere after I decide I like it. It doesn’t happen with too many names, but it has happened to me in the past. Overall, I agree with all of the previous posters. [name]Don[/name]'t worry about it too much
I definitely don’t see it catching on in the same way as all the “aden” names ([name]Braden[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], etc.). Maybe b/c it’s a much longer name? I’ve only known two Theodores my entire life: one is 40, the other is about 20 by now. No babies or kids
Probably as [name]Theodore[/name] not so much as [name]Theo[/name] which is a handsome name and I like it much more but what about these underused beauties
[name]Roland[/name] and [name]Rupert[/name] nn Row and Roo.
Thanks for the responses, everybody! Yes, I admit, the birth announcements that were getting me a bit concerned were not in my area. I live in rural New Mexico (for now) but we are looking to move up to [name]Colorado[/name] within the next year. And honestly, it probably shouldn’t be too much of a concern. It’s just, my husband is a “[name]Michael[/name]” born in the 80’s so you can imagine how many other “Mikes” he had to go to school with, play sports with, etc. [name]Even[/name] now, in our small rural town with less than 1000, there are six [name]Mike[/name]'s that we hang out with!
@rollo-i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Roland[/name]! Thanks for the suggestion =)
