Is there irony in your name choices?

Hey Berries!

I thought this could be fun to talk about! Here are some ironic names in my user card:

[name_m]Philip[/name_m]: the name [name_m]Philip[/name_m] means “horse lover,” and yet I am deathly allergic to horses!

[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]: oh, I’m also allergic to lavender!

[name_u]August[/name_u]: one of my least favorite months of the year!

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any names like this in your UC?

I love the name [name_u]Winter[/name_u] but it’s probably my least favorite season. In all fairness, [name_f]Spring[/name_f] doesn’t really work as a name haha.

I’ve actually cut [name_f]Olive[/name_f] from my shortlist because I dislike olives. Same with [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], seeing as how it’s not my favorite state.

I also love the name [name_u]Christian[/name_u] but would feel weird using it because I’m not religious. It’s a shame because there are a couple wonderful people named [name_u]Christian[/name_u] who I’d love to honor.

I take the meanings into account so I’ve cut out most of the names that would be “ironic.” They might still sit in my master list but I’m not seriously considering them. They’ll probably go to literary characters if they get used.

I’m not religious either and I love [name_f]Christina[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and some other religious related names but have mostly left them when I discovered many other names that I liked.

Interesting topic!

Beth/Lizzie/Libby/Betty: I like all four names, but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].

Nora: I dislike [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/Elinor, due to popularity, but like [name_f]Nora[/name_f], but I think it’s more popular than [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

Lily: I hate [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and [name_f]Lillie[/name_f]/Lilly but I just like [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

(Still working on my UC, so these are just from my name list)

Brandur - I’ve always liked this Icelandic name. It means fire, but I’m terrified of flames and fire. I can hardly light a candle without freaking out and one of my greatest (irrational) fears is that my house will burn down.

Pythagoras - this name has really grown on me and I’m planning to use it as a middle name, but I’m allergic to maths.

Sumarlína - Sumar means summer, and while I love the sound of it, winter is by far my favorite season.

While [name_u]August[/name_u] isn’t one of the top names in my user card, I do really like it, and I don’t like hot weather so I’m not big on the actual month either. (Funnily enough, I’m a [name_f]Julia[/name_f] born in [name_u]July[/name_u] and the weather around my birthday is oppressive to me).

My child is currently renaming themself and their top choice is [name_m]Ilya[/name_m]. Totally ironic because it means “God is my God” and they are atheist! But we are Jewish and it is the Slavic version of [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] which is close to their girly birth name, so it is a way to try to honor their birth name. (Personally I like [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] better but they are almost an adult so I really do not get a say… an opinion, but not a say, LOL.)

@momofmore I love [name_m]Ilya[/name_m], I think it’s gorgeous and such an unexpected but lovely choice outside of Eastern European countries. Your child has great taste!

i think i’ve said bye bye to many names because of that, but the ones still hanging around:

bernadette - cool and all, but i’m not actually a top fan of bears

lillian - cute! i don’t like flowers or any of its nickname choices

acauã - the laughing falcon. great meaning, not the nicest looking fella.

jonas - honor name, but let’s be real, doves = pigeons = i hate pigeons

ierê, river, lake, daeyang, caspian - water names. i am majorly afraid of water.
i usually excuse rio and river to an extent for being an ode to a place. also read = denial. (why do they sound so nice :sob:)

nevermind my uc and all its names from cultures i don’t belong to…

too much overthinking?

Same for me with [name_u]August[/name_u], I hate hot weather.

I’m also not the biggest fan of the lavender scent, but love the name.

I have quite a few names with religious meanings or origins, whilst I am not. E.g. [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]/Amadeus, [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u].

Aurora: Mornings and dawn in particular are my least favourite times of the day.

Aurelia: I’m not a big fan of gold.

Mariposa- means “butterfly”. I’m lepidopterophobic

Bishop.
I’m atheist, and literally cannot stand anything to do with religion, of any kind. So it pains me how much I love [name_m]Bishop[/name_m], as there is no getting away from the religious ties. Same goes for [name_m]Saint[/name_m].

The only other would probably be [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u], Words that are spelt completely differently from how they are pronounced annoy me. But i still much prefer [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] to [name_u]Skyler[/name_u].
