So, I love the name [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. It makes me think of clear tropical oceans and sunken treasure and pirate ships and waterfalls and mermaids. And it feels nice to say. It’s one of the names that I just love the [name_m]FEEL[/name_m] of, when I say it. But I’ve been told it is a little dated or “old ladyish”.
The other day I was doing something (don’t even remember what) and came across a list of “mermaid” baby names. On the list was [name_f]Cari[/name_f] (rhymes with sorry) not like [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]. We’re not going to the prom to throw pigs blood on people and kill them with our mind powers.
I like the sound of [name_f]Cari[/name_f]. It has a similar sound to [name_f]Coral[/name_f] but sounds maybe a bit more streamlined and modern. Plus, the meaning listed on the site, was Turkish, meaning “flows like water” which sounds very pretty and is in keeping with the rather mermaid-y name. [name_f]Cari[/name_f] sort of puts me in mind of Morske orgulje, the Croatian sea organ, which plays music with sea waves. If you haven’t seen it you should google it. It is the most hauntingly, deep, beautiful sound. For some reason [name_f]Cari[/name_f] makes me think of that.
What do you think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Cari[/name_f] or [name_f]Coral[/name_f] more? Name combination suggestions? I will use a double middle and the first middle will likely be [name_f]Angela[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Cari[/name_f] a lot. You will have to teach people to pronounce it correctly as part of the package, but for me that wouldn’t be a deal breaker for such a unique and appealing name.
My real name is rather unique and while I always thought it was spelled quite phonetically, I was correcting people on pronunciation and spelling my whole life. It has never really bothered me so I wouldn’t mind making sure people understood the correct pronunciation for [name_f]Cari[/name_f]. Thank you for the input. I really found [name_f]Cari[/name_f] appealing as well. I’m glad you agree.
I love [name_f]Coral[/name_f] and would use it over [name_f]Cari[/name_f]. She will spend her life saying “No, [name_f]Cori[/name_f] not [name_f]Carri[/name_f]” if you want [name_f]Cari[/name_f] sounds like [name_u]Corry[/name_u], I would spell it so the pronunciation is more obvious in English speaking countries if that’s your primary locale.
I really encourage you to use [name_f]Coral[/name_f] though, it’s such a sweet name and I don’t see it as dated or old ladyish at all. It’s bright, fun, could have nicknames [name_f]Cora[/name_f] or [name_f]Cori[/name_f], it’s a very fresh sounding name to me and I would be delighted to meet a [name_f]Coral[/name_f]!
I do prefer [name_f]Coral[/name_f] over [name_f]Cari[/name_f], because to me [name_f]Cari[/name_f] seems a bit incomplete, and the pronunciation you wanted was not intuitive to me. I think [name_f]Coral[/name_f] can stand on it own just fine, but you could always use [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], which is just as sweet and mermaid-y.
Also, my heart’s warm just knowing someone has heard of Croatia, haha. It’s a beautiful country indeed
I think [name_f]Cari[/name_f] is lovely! Much prefer her over [name_f]Coral[/name_f], which sounds too similar to [name_m]Carl[/name_m] for me to like it.
I just prefer [name_f]Cari[/name_f] over [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. I’d be tempered to use [name_u]Corrie[/name_u]/[name_f]Cori[/name_f] or even call her [name_f]Coral[/name_f] and nn [name_f]Cori[/name_f].
Have you considered [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]? It borrows some of the best elements from both names (the sweet sound of [name_f]Coral[/name_f] paired alongside the upbeat, fresh-sounding -ee ending of [name_f]Cari[/name_f]). Between [name_f]Cari[/name_f] and [name_f]Coral[/name_f], I’d go with [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. It’s not much of an old lady name to me at all.
[name_u]Corry[/name_u], to me, looks like it would be pronounced like [name_u]Corey[/name_u], rather than [name_f]Cari[/name_f] like the word car. The spelling doesn’t look appealing to me, either. I like [name_f]Cari[/name_f] but I still love [name_f]Coral[/name_f] more, though. I was just wondering if others felt it was dated.
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] [name_f]Angela[/name_f] Wilde is beautiful!!! [name_u]Love[/name_u] love love it. Also like it paired with [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], and [name_f]Joy[/name_f]. What a lot of beautiful choices. [name_u]Vale[/name_u] is pretty but I live in [name_u]Colorado[/name_u] and it just makes me think of the ski town.
Thank you for the input. When I saw [name_f]Cari[/name_f] I immediately pronounced it like car with a long e ending and when I double checked pronunciation that was correct, but I wasn’t sure if others would find it difficult, or as you said, not intuitive.
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f] is very sweet, as is [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], but I find I prefer just [name_f]Coral[/name_f] to most of the alternatives.
Croatia is beautiful country! I’ve always found culture and history of other countries to be a fascinating subject, which is why I am an anthropology student
[name_f]Cari[/name_f] is interesting as you have described it, but on first glance what it looks like is a nickname for something. I would not have pronounced it correctly on first glance, either. [name_f]Coral[/name_f] otoh, to me seems very fresh. I think of the color, a vibrant pink shade, or coral reefs which I like the imagery of. Any water imagery is good in my book! I don’t find it grandma-ish at all, partially because I’ve never met any Corals other than a tiny baby one. If anything, having that vintage appeal to it just means it should age well.
I would definitely go with [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. The popularity of [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] puts it right in style rather than dated.
And [name_f]Cari[/name_f] seems like a lot of hassle. It wouldn’t be people occasionally pronounce her name wrong when they see it or sometimes spell it wrong when they hear it; it would be constant. There’s no intuitive link to spelling or pronunciation using [name_f]Cari[/name_f] pronounced like [name_u]Corey[/name_u]. If you think its the name for your little one, use it, but I think [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is a much more pleasing name with none of the baggage.
I think [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is beautiful and [name_f]Cari[/name_f]/[name_f]Cori[/name_f] could work as a wonderful nn, so you could have both. To me when I look at [name_f]Cari[/name_f] I see [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]/[name_u]Kerry[/name_u] etc. I just can’t get it into my head as ‘[name_f]Cori[/name_f]’ so for that reason I would go with [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. Best of luck!
