I have [name]Marina[/name] [name]Jane[/name] as number two on my girls list. [name]Marina[/name] honors grandma [name]Marilyn[/name] and [name]Jane[/name] is for grandpa [name]John[/name]. However, now that I say it out loud all I hear it [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Jane[/name], which makes me think of drugs. I just dont think I can do that to my daughter. [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Jane[/name] are both gorgeous names, I just dont think they shouldnt go together.
[name]Do[/name] you think it is a problem? Should I find another mn for [name]Marina[/name]?
Some options:
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Therese[/name]- I dont know if I want so many Rs in her name. I couldnt say my Rs as a child
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Alice[/name]- I dont like the two As together, but [name]Alice[/name] honors my mom.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]- a little long, but ln is only one syllable. This is probably my favorite as it honors Grandma.
…And there is where I am stuck. Nothing really stick out to me like [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Lily[/name] does. Maybe abother flower name to tie her into her sister?
I don’t really hear [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] in [name]Marina[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Also, even though [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is common enough slang for marijuana, it’s such a common combo that it’s not like it’s overwhelming. It also refers to the style of shoe, no? I mean, [name]John[/name] is slang for both a prostitute’s client and the toilet, but it’s managed to remain a really popular name that’s not overly associated with those, because it’s so classic. So I don’t think you have to change it.
What about to honor [name]John[/name]:
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Joan[/name] (less timeless than [name]Jane[/name], but more current than [name]Jean[/name]?)
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Joanna[/name]/[name]Marina[/name] [name]Johanna[/name] - I know they’re 3-3 and end in -na, but to me it works because the beginnings are so different.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] - same root/etymology as [name]John[/name] by some websites. A lot of N I guess.
And going out on a wild limb to honor [name]John[/name] and get a flower in there:
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Jonquil[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Jacinthe[/name] by a longer stretch (alludes to [name]Jack[/name] / J + N)
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name] (getting further and further away)
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Jasmine[/name] (ditto [name]Jessamine[/name] - also very trendy, but, you know, pretty)
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Therese[/name] - lovely! If she has troubles with her rs…how often is she going to need to say her middle name? I don’t think it’s such a problem.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Alice[/name] - The As are hard, but it’s fine. [name]Marina[/name] [name]Elise[/name]? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Felice[/name]? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Celia[/name] uses all letters (I don’t mind 3-3, especially here the stresses are even on different syllables). [name]Marina[/name] [name]Azalea[/name] is a little close, and a flower. [name]Marina[/name] [name]Acacia[/name], similarly.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - long but fine. [name]Marina[/name] [name]Eliza[/name] (again, I don’t mind 3-3)? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Beth[/name]? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Bethia[/name]? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Elise[/name]? [name]Marina[/name] [name]Azalea[/name], again seems to show up a bit. If you merge [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] and ask for a flower, [name]Azalea[/name] comes out to my mind : D.
I love it and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] to me is candy! drugs??? Maybe I was just never in that circle but what kind of drugs are called [name]Mary[/name] [name]Janes[/name]? I also think of those sweet little girl patent leather shoes. For me I just get an old fashioned sweet vibe from hearing [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Although with [name]Marina[/name] [name]Jane[/name] I really hear [name]Marina[/name] and not so much [name]Mary[/name]- though if you say it fast I know what you mean.
[name]Hi[/name] [name]Leah[/name]!
I don’t know that it’s a huge problem. It could just be my dialect, but I don’t hear “[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]” really … I suppose if I said it really super fast, maybe. I understand your concern though …
I also understand where you are coming from with the “r” issue. I am a speech pathologist, and I have such issues choosing names for this exact reason! I have tried to choose names that are phonetically simpler to say … I always feel bad for the kiddos who have difficulty pronouncing their own names.
I love your idea of choosing a flowery/nature name in the middle spot to have a connection with her sister, [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Lily[/name].
Another “[name]Mari[/name]” name you might consider is “[name]Mariana[/name].” Still has the “r” but, it changes the flow slightly, and could still work to honor [name]Marilyn[/name]. I don’t know how well that works with [name]Saskia[/name], but, just a thought.
As far as your other names go:
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Therese[/name] - I don’t love this one … I’m not sure why.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Alice[/name]- I really like the name [name]Alice[/name], and it’s really nice that it honors your mother. I’m not sure about the flow though.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]-I like this one. The pairing of [name]Marina[/name] with something more classic is nice. I also like [name]Marina[/name] [name]Elise[/name].
Some others that might fit your criteria:
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Sage[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
I don’t think I would even think of [name]Mary[/name] when I hear [name]Marina[/name]. The two names are pretty different in style. And when I [name]DO[/name] think of “[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]”, I don’t think of marijuana. I think of cute girls’ shoes. I really wouldn’t worry about the drug association. I also have a feeling it’s slang that was used more in the sixties than now. I’ve never heard anyone in real life call marijuana [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. I love the name [name]Jane[/name].
I love the names [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] too. [name]Therese[/name] in the middle makes me picture a nun for some reason.
[name]Ive[/name] have never even heard of the shoes.? Im glad to hear there is another association with it though. I still havent decided what I want to do. My mom loves flowers, but I cant remember what her favorite is. I might have to ask her and see if that will work as a mn. [name]Lily[/name] is my favorite flower, my mils name means [name]Lily[/name], and my initals are S.L., so [name]Saskia[/name] [name]Lily[/name] has great meaning to me.
