So we are expecting, and boy names are tricky for us. I have 2 that we like, but my top is probably [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. The only issue is that, although [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] as a full name sounds I think okay/fine with our surname, our surname does completely rhyme with [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] (pronounced Xay-vee) as a nickname. Our other kids nicknames also don’t sound very good with our surname, and that’s never been an issue, but then, they don’t rhyme with it. Is this a problem or not? Would love your opinions!!
Honestly, I don’t think it matters. Most of the time if he’s introduced with your last name, it will be full [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] anyway. Go with the name you like
While this would be a problem for me, it wouldn’t be enough to scratch [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] from the list if my heart was set on it. I would, however, stay away from the nickname [name_m]Xavi[/name_m].
I want to say it’s fine, because you love the name and I do too (especially nickname [name_m]Xavi[/name_m]), but honestly this would be a dealbreaker for me. [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] [name_m]Davie[/name_m], [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] Pavey, [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] [name_f]Tavy[/name_f]… they all sound rather comical to my ear.
However, do you actually intend to use [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] as a nickname? If not, it might be workable, especially if you establish an alternative nickname (maybe Xay/Zay, Xav, Vee or just X?) from the beginning.
I’m sorry, but I would move on from [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]/[name_m]Xavi[/name_m] and I know that is difficult but naming our child is one of the most loving, important gifts we bestow on our child. With that responsibility we may have to choose a name that isn’t necessarily our very favourite, but that is how he will be known so I would set aside a rhyming, or sing-song-y name. You mentioned that you have two top names or maybe the NB community can offer suggestions based on your criteria? Best of luck.
It would depend on how much I’d really love the name, and if I’d actually intend to use the nickname that rhymes with the last name.
If [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] is the name for both of you and you’ve got your mind set on it, then I’d say: use it anyway. Especially if you’re not planning to use [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] as a nickname. Maybe it’s best to think of an alternative nickname just in case.
I think it depends how often you use the nickname and who uses it. If you use [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] most of the time, [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] Surname might be used. If it’s not that often, or people outside of close friends and family won’t really use it, then his full name will always be [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] Surname.
My nickname is used by almost all of my family 70-80% of the time, and by some close friends. No one has ever called me by my nickname and surname, only full name and surname
I’ve never known a [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] who went by [name_m]Xavi[/name_m] so unless you call him that and dislike it I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
