Is this name becoming too popular?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

I wanted your thoughts on [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and how popular it’s becoming. [name_f]My[/name_f] S/O and I chose it quite some time ago because we both love the moon and I love short, sweet girl names and names that start with L. We also wanted a name that worked in Spanish and Italian for our families. It’s really the only name we can envision using for our little girl and it’s just perfect for us. [name_f]My[/name_f] only concern is how popular it’s getting!

Though it’s obviously not a dealbreaker, I’d love to know: how popular is this name really? Have you met any little Lunas? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s becoming too popular? Also, since we’re still several years away from having kids, will popularity for [name_f]Luna[/name_f] even matter by then? Please let me know your thoughts

TIA!

It is quite popular, but I’ve never actually met one! Also, the popularity probably ranges by state, even if it’s quite popular in the US overall. (this is assuming you’re in the US- it’s less popular in the UK).

If you’re worried about popularity, maybe ask friends in your specific area if they know any young Lunas?

Personally, I wouldn’t let popularity stop you from using [name_f]Luna[/name_f]- it sounds like the perfect name for you and your S/O!

I don’t know any, personally, but I’ve had several (maybe around a dozen) come into the hospital or born at the hospital (where I work), within the last 4 years.

I wouldn’t use it, but I’m extremely resistant to popular names. However, most people on this forum will say popularity doesn’t matter if you really love a name. And I do agree with that (for other people)!

I know a lot of dogs named [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and have seen it used as a middle name quite often but i haven’t actually met a human girl with the first name [name_f]Luna[/name_f] if that matters. I think its less popular than it was like 5 years ago too.

Yes I’ve met a dog and two cats so it seems quite popular for pets! I think you’re right that it got most of its popularity around 2011-2017.

I totally understand why you’d avoid popular! But I appreciate your support in using what we love most. A dozen is quite a lot though! [name_m]Can[/name_m] I ask what area of the world or section of the US you’re from?

Hello! One of my very good friends has a [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. She’s adorable. I wasn’t into the name at first, reminded me of tuna, loony, lunatic

However- when I heard it and saw it on her toddler, it was super cute. So now I quite like it! But yes it’s super super popular right now.

Yes I noticed that it’s quite rare where we are (Midwest) but popular on the west coast where we’re considering moving. Asking friends is a great idea! Thank you!

Glad to know you warmed up to it! I was worried about some of the rhyming/word associations too. Not enough to dissuade though I don’t think.

I’m in [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]! And this is a dozen out of… I don’t even know  In my time working at the hospital, I’ve probably seen over 5,000 kids and babies… That’s a rough estimate :woman_shrugging:t2:

I only know one adult [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and I am pretty sure this is a nickname: however, I work at a primary school and there are TONS of little Lunas. I don’t think it is very popular across generations, but there is at least one [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in each grade nowadays.

I used to love [name_f]Luna[/name_f] too but it just got too popular where I am. If you can’t picture anything else I would still go with it though. I’m struggling to get over my love of [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]/Oskar as well, but as someone who themselves has a unique name, I can’t imagine having a child referred to as X with surname initial etc

Sounds like you love the name so use it!!! You’ll regret it if you don’t. I’ve never met a baby [name_f]Luna[/name_f], the only time I’ve heard it used on a real child is [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f] [name_f]Teigen[/name_f]’s daughter.

I’ve never met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f], though I’m not sure if it’s popular. Names can never be too popular for me, but it doesn’t really matter to me.

Luna is popular, but it sounds like a perfect choice for you! I wouldn’t let the popularity bother you.

True, a dozen isn’t too many when thousands of babies are born every minute! There are so many names in use now that even the most popular are still far less popular than a top 10 name a few decades ago.

Ooh I adore [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]! I’ve never met any but I would love to see it used more often. I’m a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] but never met any others til I was an adult, so it never felt common. I’m also not a big fan of the last initial thing (we had 3 [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]’s, 3 [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]’s, and 4 [name_m]Brandon[/name_m]’s in my class of >100 :grimacing:), so that’s my only concern.

I figured the popularity was more spread out over the years rather than a dozen in one grade! Helps get a better idea of it as a generational name rather than a super trendy/popular one.

I don’t know of any Lunas personally.
