I dont think Jack is boring, but it is very popular.
If its too safe for your liking you could always use it as a nickname for any ‘john’ related name like Johan, Ivan, Jankin, Jenkin, Jackin, Jacque, Jonathan, Jackman, Jackson Jacob, Jacobi etc.
As for middle Id personally go with a longer name to help the flow a bit. like Jack Maxwell, Jack Thomas, Jack Nicholas etc.
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a great name in my opinion. I’d class it as cool. [name_f][/name_f] I wouldn’t put [name_m]Jack[/name_m] with [name_m]Max[/name_m] though. Something longer is required.
I personally think it’s a bit overdone being #15[name_f][/name_f] (in the USA, at least and will likely only climb higher since [name_m]Justin[/name_m] and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] Bieber picked it…)
[name_f][/name_f]
Other names that are a bit less common but still bring an edge and have the same initial sound:
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Jett[/name_m] (this one is trending upward, though) [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jacques[/name_m] ( a little cheeky lol) [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jameson[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jensen[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jorah[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Gentry[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
Cool middles for [name_m]Jack[/name_m] if that’s what you land on:
I love [name_m]Jack[/name_m]! [name_f][/name_f] I don’t find him boring at all. [name_f][/name_f] I wouldn’t consider common the same thing as boring, though. [name_f][/name_f] That being said, if he’s not your thing, I would recommend you keep looking until you can find something you both love! [name_f][/name_f] I also don’t love [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Max[/name_m], the names sound too similar for my taste, although something like [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m] would be nice, I think! [name_f][/name_f] I think the -imilian separates the “ack” sounds that are so strong in [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_m]Max[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] Maybe you could use [name_m]Jack[/name_m] as a middle for an unexpected middle as a compromise? [name_f][/name_f] Something like [name_m]Amias[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] or [name_m]Emory[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] or [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m], etc.?
My nephew’s name is [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. I don’t find it boring. I also think the person makes the name and my nephew, who is exciting and energetic and a live wire, definitely has made the name his. In the long run, how you portray the name to your child can play into what they think of the name as they get older.
If you’re still stuck on the name, maybe choose a middle name meaningful — you could choose one that honours a person or activity you love doing or a place you love visiting.
For example, if and your husband love the ocean, you could try something like [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Zale[/name_m] (Greek, means sea-strength) or [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Sewell[/name_m]/[name_m]Sewall[/name_m] (means sea wall).
I see why it would be boring, given its popularity, shortness and the fact that it’s a nickname for the most common name ever, [name_m]John[/name_m]. But I think [name_m]Jack[/name_m] can make up for that with its cool, energetic sound.
[name_f][/name_f]
I also wouldn’t combine [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Max[/name_m], they give a similar feeling but sound very choppy when said together. They’d make good brothers though! You could go with [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] or [name_m]Jack[/name_m] Maxwell… or just use [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Max[/name_m], honestly. Bad flow isn’t the end of the world.

If you still think [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is to boring, there is a plethora of long forms that could lead to [name_m]Jack[/name_m] as a nickname! Some great suggestions in this thread already.
Yes, i do find [name_m]Jack[/name_m] a bit lacklustre, kind of like a sturdy, solid but unremarkable name, however[name_f][/name_f], it does have the benefit of being timeless, versatile and still energised rather than dated or heavily classic [name_f][/name_f]- and I’ve known [name_f][/name_f] quite a number of Jacks, and none of them disliked their name.
[name_f][/name_f]
You could do something like [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] (nn Jack)?
I’m kind of obsessed with the name [name_m]Jack[/name_m], personally! I think it’s way too charming and classic to be boring. It’s classic but just has a snap to it, you know? I think that [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] is over done and not very interesting. Most Jack’s I hear in real life are Jacksons.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Max[/name_m] is a little abrupt for my taste. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] or [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] would be cool.
I may be an odd one out, but I really do find it boring – im sorry! I personally just find it very bland and completely overdone. I feel like there has been no break in the name either just constantly hearing this name and to me it is WAYY too many [name_f][/name_f]- I believe its wayy too much more than any [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f] which were uber popular. The name itself just isnt for me either… I havent seen the appeal in this name as the sound or look dont appeal to me and the teasing potential later in school (which I have heard it all directed towards [name_m]Jack[/name_m] when I went to school) being “Jack off” etc… [name_f][/name_f]Anyways, I am sorry this opinion may not be what you are looking to hear and may be an odd one out, but just my stance on the name.
I do find Jack really boring tbh. It’s one of my least favourite names.
I think it doesn’t help that it’s used a lot in fairytales and nursery rhymes, plus so many sayings (‘Jack-of-all-trades’, ‘Jack-the-lad’, ‘I’m alright, Jack’, ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, ‘Jack it in’, ‘Don’t know jack’ and probably more that I’ve forgotten). It’s so ubiquitous it’s almost a non-name to me.
It isn’t boring as a name, I think it’s a rather cool name.
[name_f][/name_f]
However[name_f][/name_f], if I’m being honest, I’m tired of it. It was the #1[name_f][/name_f] boys name in [name_f]England[/name_f] for decades, and in some of those years it was used over 9,000/10,000 times in [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m], including the year I was born when it was used 9,100 times. Both of the schools I attended were swimming with Jacks in every year group.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Even[/name_m] though it got oversaturated over here, I still think it’s a cool sounding name, but just a bit overdone (at least here in England).
I don’t normally describe names as boring, but I have to say I do find Jack rather overused, at least in my neck of the woods. It seems nearly everyone either has a son called Jack or knows somebody who does.
I love Jack! It definitely has different vibes for the younger generation. I feel like it might feel boring on an old person, but not for the younger generation. My daughter has a 3 yr old friend named Jack, and it definitely has more cool vibes! Jack and Max actually have similar vibes to me! But I definitely think if you don’t love the name Jack, it might be best for you guys to decide on a name that you both love
I’m not a fan of Jack Max together, unfortunately. In addition to sounding a little choppy, they also almost rhyme with each other. Since Max is pronounced like *macks*, it’s like being named Jack Macks.
Good luck!
ETA: I am in the US. I imagine it has a different vibe in other areas. The only Jacks I know are pretty old or under 10. Kind of like Henry, where it went out of style for a while despite being a classic name. If you don’t live in the US, maybe it is more boring and maybe it has been pretty consistent in its popularity.
I think Jack is very popular, but not in the way that feels like a passing trend. It definitely has the cool factor. It’s short and zippy, but also has a timeless friendly feel. Like you could meet a 50 or a 5 year old Jack and the name will still be charming, it suits any age.
I think Jack Max may sound unbalanced, since both names are only 1 syllable. Perhaps a longer version like Jack Maxwell, Jack Maxen, or Jack Maximilian would add some variation in the sounds.
