Is this name headed to Top 100?

We are considering the name Lincoln (currently #132) for baby #3 and I’m looking for opinions as to whether its likely headed to the top 100, or possibly even top 20- 50? Thanks!!

I’d say Top 20.

Definitely a possibility. I’ve met two who are under the age of 2.

Yeah I think it’s definitely heading up the charts

I would say yes.

Probably not. The top boy’s names are pretty consistently biblical/family names; [name]John[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Michael[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Matthew[/name], [name]Anthony[/name], [name]Andrew[/name]… They’ve been changing more recently to reflect a more ‘trendy’ style, but I don’t see [name]Lincoln[/name] as one of those. [name]Aiden[/name] is a fad, from my perspective; even with it’s top place the last couple years, it’s still only 54 for the last decade.

I can see [name]Lincoln[/name] jumping one or two hundred places, but it will probably not gain the kind of popularity to be worried about.

Nameberry Perspective is almost a different dimension as far as popularity goes; I can see it making the top 50 among our ranks pretty soon, but certainly NOT nationally. Something rather drastic would have to happen culturally to shake the last 100 years of boy naming tradition.

[name]Lincoln[/name] was #139 in 2012, so if it jumped 100 places it would break the top 50. It has risen 500 places in the last ten years.

I’d say [name]Lincoln[/name] making it to the Top 100 is a sure bet, and it will happen within the next few years. As for whether or not it could climb all the way to the 25-50 range…maybe. It will take some time, but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit considering that it’s already trending sharply upward, it has a famous association (who is currently a popular subject in books and film), it has a cool nickname, and it fits in very well with a number of names that are already quite popular – surnamey, two-syllable, ends-with-N, etc.

Yeah, it’s on its way up. It’s still a great name, though, and it’s a different thing to be born on the leading edge of a name’s popularity than it is to be born in the thick of it. I wouldn’t rush to give [name]Lincoln[/name] up just because it’s becoming more popular.

Top 100? Almost definitely. 50? Maybe. 20? I can’t see it happening.

It is one the names we are considering if this baby is a boy. I definitely see it rising. It fits with the surname trend. [name]Lincoln[/name] has been popular recently with the release of TWO different [name]Lincoln[/name] movies and [name]Dax[/name] [name]Shepard[/name]/[name]Kristen[/name] Ball naming their daughter [name]Lincoln[/name] [name]Bell[/name].

Especially with all the [name]Lincoln[/name] stuff out in pop culture right now, I could see it at least breaking top 100, if not 50. But if you love it and it means something to you, I say go for it regardless.

Well, clearly I didn’t do my research thoroughly. I was looking at decade lists for general boy trends as opposed to last year’s list.

But like someone else said, there’s been a LOT of [name]Lincoln[/name] in pop culture recently, with movies and celebrity names, so I see it more as a fad than a ‘permanent addition.’ I simply can’t see this name rising to incredible levels of popularity. [name]Even[/name] breaking the top 200 isn’t ridiculously popular; it really just makes a name known as opposed to uncommon. [name]Lincoln[/name] might become normal, but it’ll have a hard time knocking out those Johns and [name]James[/name]'s and [name]Matthews[/name].

I’d say it is probably going to rise in popularity but I don’t think like every other boy is going to be called [name]Lincoln[/name]. If you really love the name, use it. If it’s not your fav, then pick something else regardless of its popularity. If you really are interested in honoring Honest [name]Abe[/name], I don’t see [name]Abraham[/name] being in the top 20 anytime soon (and if you don’t care for [name]Abe[/name], try [name]Bram[/name]). If you want to honor presidents, [name]Monroe[/name] is a cool choice, and there’s [name]Franklin[/name] ([name]Roosevelt[/name]), [name]Theodore[/name] (also [name]Roosevelt[/name]), [name]Johnson[/name] (nn [name]Jack[/name] still can apply here, or [name]Sonny[/name]), [name]George[/name] (might coninue to rise in popularity a bit, honestly I was surprised to see it in the top 1000) Eisenhower (intersting choice, nn [name]Howie[/name]?), [name]Wilson[/name], [name]Jefferson[/name] (so awesome! I’d love to meet a little [name]Jefferson[/name]), [name]Quincy[/name], [name]Pierce[/name], [name]Grant[/name], [name]Hayes[/name] (could be interesting…), [name]Rutherford[/name] (nn [name]Ford[/name]?), [name]Harding[/name] (nn [name]Hardy[/name]?), [name]Ford[/name], or [name]Roosevelt[/name] (nn Roo? not sure how I feel about it…). Anyways… Best of luck!

yes and no I don’t think it’s going into the top 100 this year. I think that if you named a boy [name]Lincoln[/name], he might know another one. But he might not. I think it’s very possible he’ll be the only one in his class. I wouldn’t worry. It’s not going to be in the top overnight. Also keep in mind, [name]Lincoln[/name] only has one spelling so it’s actually less popular than a name [name]Aden[/name]. For most of their lives kids stay with kids who are the same age as them. I wouldn’t worry if 10 years down the line it went into the top ten. Good [name]Luck[/name]!

I agree with this completely.

Thanks everyone! I don’t really love the name, but I’m trying to… I did before my first son was born several years ago, but now I can’t see it on my own child, although I still love it on others. Hubby thinks it’s “the one” though. It’s increasing popularity, along with the fact we’ve rejected it twice already (we already have two boys) has really turned me off. The issue is that hubby hates my current fav ([name]Silas[/name]) and we can’t come up with anything else.
