Is this name too feminine?

What are your thoughts on the name [name_u]Shae[/name_u]? It’s a variant of [name_u]Shea[/name_u] which is of Irish origin and means majestic. I believe the name is more commonly used for girls but we like it as a boys’ name and are considering using it for son #2. Our first son is named [name_u]Easton[/name_u] and I think it kind of fits with our unique naming style. But is it too feminine and are we setting him up for teasing and name calling ie. “shea butter”. What about the spelling? Yay or Nay? Options are [name_u]Shea[/name_u]/[name_u]Shae[/name_u]/[name_u]Shay[/name_u]. We personally like [name_u]Shae[/name_u] but still on fence about the name in general. Thanks!

I think [name_u]Shae[/name_u] works well enough on a boy, though I personally would likely opt for the [name_u]Shay[/name_u] spelling, simply because that’s what I’m used to and because [name_u]Shae[/name_u] does remind me of shea butter (though I doubt there’d be any teasing about this).

I like [name_u]Shea[/name_u] quite a lot, and although the only person I have known by the name was female, I don’t think of the name as inherently feminine or masculine. It is a very neutral gender-neutral choice.

I prefer [name_u]Shea[/name_u] to the other spellings. I don’t think the name is more tease-worthy than any other and isn’t worth judging that way. I think it’s perfectly usable and would be a great pick!

I grew up with a boy named [name_u]Shae[/name_u] (spelled like this) so I always assumed this was how it was spelled normally. It wasn’t until adulthood that I realized he actually had a unique spelling. However, I do prefer the [name_u]Shea[/name_u] spelling as it is more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. I have only ever met males with the name so I don’t think you’d have trouble with this on a boy.

I’ve known one of each. Feels very unisex to me. Either spelling is fine I think.

It feels very unisex to me as well.

It seems really unisex to me, too. I probably wouldn’t assume gender, but if anything I think it leans more masculine for me.

It sounds more feminine than masculine to me.

A guy friend of mine’s last name was [name_u]Shea[/name_u] growing up, and we often called him by his last name. I think it could be used on a boy or girl.

There was a female [name_u]Shea[/name_u] on Game of Thrones. Ice Cube’s real name us O’[name_u]Shea[/name_u]. There is definitely precedent for it being a unisex name. Instinctively I personally would use the [name_u]Shay[/name_u] spelling for a boy.

[name_u]Shae[/name_u] is definitely unisex, but I prefer it on a boy. So I think it would work just fine as a male name. I’d spell it [name_u]Shea[/name_u] though, it looks more natural.

I think [name_u]Shae[/name_u] is very unisex. I really like it for a boy.

There is a NHL player [name_u]Shea[/name_u] - big, defensive guy and I’ve always thought “what a great name”.

I really like [name_u]Shea[/name_u] but not with the spelling changed.

I think the name shae can be a boys name but it doesn’t go well with easton.

For some reason I see [name_u]Shae[/name_u] as feminine and [name_u]Shay[/name_u] as masculine. I couldn’t say why though.

If you’re worried about the ambiguity you could use [name_u]Shane[/name_u] with the nickname [name_u]Shae[/name_u]. I also think [name_u]Sutton[/name_u], [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] or even [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] would work great with [name_u]Easton[/name_u].

I think it’s unisex, but would spell it [name_u]Shay[/name_u] for a boy. I’ve only known one person with this name and he spelled it this way.

The only person I’ve known with this name was a boy, a childhood friend’s older brother. I don’t remember how he spelled it, but I prefer the spelling [name_u]Shay[/name_u]. It looks the least like the butter and the most masculine in my opinion.

I love this name for a boy (not so much for a girl). I like the spelling [name_u]Shea[/name_u]
