Hello, we both really like the name [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] but do you all think it’s too weird or out there? It’s our favorite name and the middle name will be [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] so when he’s older if he doesn’t like the name he could always choose to go by his middle name. Thank you, we’d really appreciate your help.
Ya way to close to Orfice I could see it getting picked on something fierce.
What about
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_m]Otis[/name_m]
[name_m]Osiris[/name_m]
Phineas
Leonidas
I do quite like it, though it is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I think with the grounded middle it could work though
[name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_m]Romulus[/name_m] and Leondias could be some other similar options
I would be concerned about its similarity to the word “orifice” and possible jokes.
You might be right about little kids not knowing enouhh to get it but [name_m]Just[/name_m] for shits and giggles i asked my 13 and 16 year old boys (who both have been through sex ed) and they started laughing immediately i wouldnt under estimate them. Kids are mean and brighter than you would think.
In the end name your child whatever you want
You might as well name your kid [name_m]Oral[/name_m]. There are better less easy to pick on names out there
My only reservation is the history of the name. The myth of [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] is definitely a tragedy, so you would have to keep in mind if having the connotation would be weird for your baby. I like the sound of the name a lot, though, and if you decide the history of the name is too off-putting, there are definitely more names from myths/classic works that would that would give you the same feel with a lighter meaning behind them. Best of luck!
I’m pretty sure [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] had children with his mother…so I’m not sure if it’s a good namesake
I don’t think it is too out there, I’m just not a fan of its sound, just like I’m not crazy about [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] is very handsome, though!
I personally think it’s too out there, but could make a nice middle name seeing as you both like it so much.
[name_m]Way[/name_m] too close to orifice and orphan to be usable in my opinion. Maybe as a middle.
I love an ancient clunker so I can get behind this. Perhaps it’s the “type” I’d love to see getting some use, it fits into my Steampunk category. Makes me think of old theaters.
Though purely soundwise, I’m not sure I find it the most pleasant. I’m biased because I rarely like a name that begins with O, and one on my little rules is that I have to like the first syllable of a name on its own, given it will likely get shortened to that at some point. I don’t think I’d love being called “Orph” myself.
So I mean there are some negatives and it’s probably not one I’d use. But if you love it, I 'd support it and I can see its charms.
It may be a little out there, but choosing a simple, classic middle name is a good choice! I do, however, think that Orpheus is an easy target for immature boys in their later years.[name_m] How[/name_m] about some other Greek mythology names such as:
[name_m]Ajax[/name_m]
[name_m]Damon[/name_m]
Aeson
Brontes
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_m]Leander[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
They are all strong and handsome names, but not as out there.
Thank you so much everyone. Although the myth is usually considered a tragedy, at the end after [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] dies he reunites with [name_f]Eurydice[/name_f] in the underworld and they live happily together there forever so I like to think of that as a happy ending. And thank you for the suggestions, we are taking all of them into consideration too.
I think it may be a little too out there. Maybe have it as the middle name, so you still get to keep the name and you child has something unique, without having the worry that he’ll have trouble learning to spell it, other kids will either tease him, not know how to spell it or pronounce it, as well as its hard to give a nickname too. I like it, I just think it would be better off as a middle name
I love it [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] strong, stand-out name. Very handsome!
