Is this nickname too much of a stretch?

I am in love with the name [name]Ingrid[/name]. I know it would be some would consider it a bold choice with all of the frilly airy fairy girls names out there, but that is what I love about it —I think it is strong and distinct while still being feminine, flowery, and elegant.

My question involves this…my love of the name started when I went to school with an [name]Ingrid[/name], but she was often called [name]Ginny[/name] as her nickname. Apparently it was a transposition of the nickname Ingy [name]Ginny[/name]

I think [name]Ingrid[/name] is great on its own, but I also think [name]Ginny[/name] might be an adorable nickname – but is it way too much of a stretch? [name]Ingrid[/name] to [name]Ginny[/name]? Obviously it worked for my friend, but I also know it is not a standard nickname for [name]Ingrid[/name].

I like [name]Ingrid[/name], but [name]Ginny[/name] doesn’t work for me. It bothers me that [name]Ingrid[/name] has a hard G but the G in [name]Ginny[/name] is pronounced more like a J. What about [name]Inga[/name] as a nickname? I think that’s so cute.

Okay – it is a bit of a stretch, but I think you can still pull it off. I think sounds do change in nns, but you can let that go – if you want. One can wonder how history ever got from [name]Mary[/name] to [name]Polly[/name] or [name]Eleanor[/name] to [name]Nell[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name] to [name]Maisie[/name], but somehow – they did. [name]Just[/name] let go of your OCD (I share it, that is why I can laugh about it) and go with the flow. [name]Ingrid[/name] to [name]Ginny[/name] becomes charming.

I love it! I’m a huge fan of unique nicknames. I mean, I think you can call your children anything you want as a nickname, it doesn’t have to come from the name. I’m tired of the common/boring nicknames like [name]Michael[/name] nn [name]Mike[/name], [name]Christopher[/name] nn [name]Chris[/name], [name]Brianna[/name] nn [name]Bri[/name], etc. I think [name]Ingrid[/name] nn [name]Ginny[/name] is darling! [name]How[/name] the heck do people get [name]Peg[/name] from [name]Margaret[/name]?! I’m a very open minded person, maybe that’s why I don’t think it’s “too much of a stretch”.

I agree with the posters above - getting [name]Ginny[/name] from [name]Ingrid[/name] is no more of a stretch than getting [name]Dolly[/name] from [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Trip[/name] from [name]Phillip[/name], or [name]Libby[/name] from [name]Elizabeth[/name].

100% Agreed! Nicknames can be whatever we want! Our daughter’s name is [name]Jillian[/name], nn [name]Jilli[/name] - some family started calling her [name]Jilli[/name]-bean when she was only 4 lbs, and ever since then her grandpa calls her ‘Beaner’! Not my fav, but definitely a sweet story and it’s their ‘thing’.

[name]Ginny[/name] is sooooo sweet and I love [name]Ingrid[/name] even more than [name]Virginia[/name]! Go for it!

[name]Ingrid[/name] nn [name]Ginny[/name] is fabulous! Go for it!
