To have a daughter named [name]Willow[/name] when her father/my husband’s name is [name]William[/name]? He was looking over my shoulder today when I was organizing my BabyNames.com list and noticed [name]Willow[/name] was on it, and he said he loves it. I asked him if he thought it was weird, and he was like “No, they are two different names.” But it seems weird to me. I call him [name]Will[/name] all the time, and I don’t think I could help shortening [name]Willow[/name] to [name]Will[/name] as well. Too close?
I would probably give it a bit of a side-eye. It reminds me of [name]Will[/name] and [name]Jada[/name] [name]Smith[/name] naming their kids [name]Willow[/name] and [name]Jaden[/name]; I’ve always thought it was a little strange. But that’s just me.
Yes, the smiths is what I thought of right away too. I don’t think it makes it unusable though.
I also thought of [name]Will[/name] [name]Smith[/name] and [name]Jada[/name] Pinkett [name]Smith[/name]!
It is a little close, but I don’t think it makes [name]Willow[/name] unusable.
It also, at first, reminded me of [name]Will[/name] and [name]Jada[/name] [name]Smith[/name].
Then it reminded me of a book I had read once with a couple in it that were named [name]Ray[/name] ([name]Raymond[/name]) and [name]Kay[/name] ([name]Katherine[/name]), and they named their twin daughters after them: [name]Reanne[/name] and Kaliegh.
I guess it depends on your perspective of it; I take it ad a sweet and loving gesture with a twist of a name (since I hate names with ‘[name]Jr[/name].’ at the end. But you picked a different name entirely.) And I also personally love the name [name]Willow[/name].
I’ve always loved it, even before I met [name]Will[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think people will see it as “honoring” her Dad, like a [name]Jr[/name].? I hadn’t thought of [name]Will[/name] [name]Smith[/name]… hmm, I wonder if everyone would automatically think of that.
I think it’s a lovely name, and I think it’s refreshing to give your daughter a name that’s similar to her dad’s. [name]Willow[/name] is really soft, calls up the image of the graceful weeping tree, and totally different from [name]Wilson[/name], yet both [name]Wills[/name]! She might love sharing a nickname with her dad. Also, you must read her The Wind In The Willows.
Also, I had no idea about [name]Will[/name] [name]Smith[/name]. [name]Do[/name] people really remember celebrity baby names after a few months anyway?
I actually know someone that named their daughter [name]Willow[/name] after her dad [name]Willard[/name]. She gets called by her full name, he almost always gets called [name]Will[/name]. Same idea you have, really. Go for it.
I’ve never brought it up to him before because I just assumed he would think it was silly, since he has made fun of feminizations before when I jokingly suggested [name]Wilhelmina[/name]. But he doesn’t see [name]Willow[/name] as too close to his name, so it’s making me rethink it.
Also. Sorry for multiple postings but this just occurred to me: [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Willow[/name]! [name]Both[/name] trees. Very sweet.
I reallly like [name]Willow[/name], I think it’s a great option for you! It’s very similar to Dad’s name, but if you can come up with another nickname than [name]Will[/name], I think it’ll be fine. Does [name]Rowan[/name] have a nickname? I too find it sweet that both [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] are tree names:)
[name]Rowan[/name] doesn’t have a nickname, sometimes I call her [name]Ro[/name]. I don’t usually like nicknames.
I, personally, didn’t think of [name]Will[/name] [name]Smith[/name].
I don’t think it’s too close to [name]Will[/name]/ [name]William[/name]. It has a different vibe to it then [name]William[/name] [name]IMO[/name], which is why I think it would work. Good luck!
I think it’s great. I would probably think you did it a little to honor him but I think that’s a great thing, not strange at all. And I really love [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] together!
That’s another reason I love it too!
It makes me think of the Smiths as well, and I immediately picked up on the tree thing. I don’t think that it’s unusable for your family! If you’re trying to avoid [name]Will[/name] as a nickname, perhaps Low, [name]Lola[/name], [name]Lil[/name], or [name]Lilla[/name] could work?
The only issue I am having is that I am usually very “anti-nickname” and [name]Rowan[/name] goes by [name]Rowan[/name] 95% of the time. If we used [name]Willow[/name], I would most likely call her Lo or [name]Lola[/name] just to differentiate between her Dad. [name]Do[/name] you think people would “get” the nickname [name]Lola[/name]? Or would people just take it upon themselves and shorten it to [name]Will[/name] anyway? And is it wrong to choose a nickname before the child is even born? [name]Aren[/name]'t nicknames earned? Hmm… so confused.
I like [name]Willow[/name] fine but two [name]Will[/name]'s might be confusing.
No, I don’t think it’s too weird nor is to too similar of a name.
There’s a few nicknames for [name]Willow[/name]: [name]Billie[/name], [name]Lola[/name], [name]Lolo[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Willie[/name], [name]Willy[/name]… you wouldn’t have to use [name]Will[/name] as a nickname for her if you didn’t want to.
