Is this usable for a girl?

I adore the name [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a girl. (No longer name, just [name_u]Remy[/name_u].) I think it’s a very feminine sounding name, with the “em” sound. [name_u]Remy[/name_u], to me, sounds like a cute alternative to [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

But a couple of my friends that I’ve told the name to say that it’s a boy name. One friend even said “Why don’t you just name your daughter [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]? That would be less masculine that [name_u]Remy[/name_u].” That rude response got me a little worried that most people feel the same way.

I’m aware that it’s unisex, but it reads alllllll girl to me. Plus, the combo would be [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too masculine? Or is it unisex enough to work?

I definitely see your point. I actually prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a girl (and I don’t usually like unisex names on a girl) and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is very very pretty. This is why you don’t tell people your name picks till after you have a baby; they are less likely to say something critical when the name is attached to a cute little baby. If you love it, you should do it; it’s certainly not like naming your daughter [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]!

I like [name_u]Remy[/name_u] better on a boy, but I wouldnt raise an eyebrow if I came across a girl [name_u]Remy[/name_u].

I prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u] on a boy (preferably a romantic [name_m]French[/name_m] one :)) but I’ve heard it used on a girl.

Eh. I’m not a fan of it on either gender, but I guess it could work.

I know this isn’t your fault, so don’t look at this like I’m blaming you or even suggesting that these are your reasons OP.

[name_f]My[/name_f] Opinion.

Constantly seeing boy’s names that have only recently been used for girls described as ‘unisex’ just so that parents can feel better about using a name on the un-traditional gender is really starting to grate on me. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_u]Remy[/name_u], [name_u]James[/name_u]… they’re all still boy’s name and it’ll take years and years of historically documented usage for them to become truly unisex like [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_u]Nicky[/name_u] or [name_u]Danny[/name_u].

At the end of the day, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] by itself is a [name_m]French[/name_m] boy’s name. It doesn’t stop being a boy’s name just because it has limited usage as a girl’s name and it doesn’t automatically become unisex either.

To me, yes, it’s just the same as using Joshua for a girl. I’d vastly prefer Remy to stay male.

I like the name [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a boy a lot. I hesitate to say it wouldn’t work for a girl, but I definitely consider it a boy’s name. And I’m one of those people who wishes girl parents would just choose girl names and leave the boy names alone.

When I was little, I had a friend named [name_u]Remi[/name_u]. We still know each other (it’s been about 13 years), and I just recently found out it’s short for [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]. I think [name_u]Remi[/name_u] / [name_u]Remy[/name_u] are both very nice! Although I prefer the I version. I think if you love it, go for it! It’s not the same at all as [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is so pretty!

I dislike it for both, but I can see the appeal on a girl (sort of). I like [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] actually, it sort of balances out the unisexness of [name_u]Remy[/name_u].

*just a side note though, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] was the name of the male rat in Ratatouille.

Honestly, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] seems strictly unisex. I do not view many names as strictly unisex. To me, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] feels like [name_u]Reggie[/name_u]. [name_u]Reggie[/name_u] also seems half masculine and half feminine.
I definitely find [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as a softer name for boys. I personally, prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u] on a girl. I have never seen or heard the name used, so I am not basing this on who I know with the name.
I think it is adorable, strong enough to hold its own, and preferably paired with a more feminine middle when chosen for a girl. [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is a great combo.

I love it adorable and the option as [name_f]Emy[/name_f] for the nickname is perfect… It doesn’t sound masculine to me at all.

There was a character on the tv show ravenswood named [name_u]Remy[/name_u] who was a girl. I think it works fine.

To rephrase what renrose articulately said, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] isn’t in fact a unisex name. In its original country of [name_f]France[/name_f], [name_u]Remy[/name_u] is strictly male. To me, it does seem as odd as someone naming their daughter [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] (I simply don’t understand taking a name with history of being solely male and awarding it to a girl - there are so many lovely female and legitimately unisex names out there!). I’d opt for [name_u]Romy[/name_u], which is definitely unisex.

I can see where you’re coming from and I think [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is a lovely name for a girl! But I have to say my first (and really only) association with the name is the male rat from Disney’s Ratatouille which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but could be something to keep in mind, especially if you want to avoid teasing.

But I do agree its sound is very feminine and wouldn’t sound out of place with Emmas and Emilys. Used as a nn for [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], as someone suggested, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] could be a charming girls name!

Thank you guys so much! I’ll try to give a general response to all.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I know now that it isn’t unisex… I still find it appealing only for a girl. Any names with the [name_f]Em[/name_f] sound (even [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]) just sound girly to me. I’m glad I know that now though. It’s something to consider, for sure. The fact that it’s the rat’s name on Ratatouille doesn’t really bother me, either. Probably by the time I have a daughter, most of her peers probably won’t know what Ratatouille is. (Maybe.) [name_u]Romy[/name_u] has also been suggested to me recently, and I actually think that sounds more masculine than [name_u]Remy[/name_u]! [name_u]Rory[/name_u] has been a suggestion too, but it runs a close second to [name_u]Remy[/name_u]. & Basically, most of my friends had the same reaction that most of you had. As in, they think it’s a boy name, but they could see it work on a girl just fine, especially paired with [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. One of my friends actually said that they could see [name_u]Remy[/name_u] being the new [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] for girls. Hmm. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m really glad I got all of your input. It gives me a lot to think about.

I don’t really care for the name myself but I don’t find it too masculine to be used for a girl. I know someone with a daughter named [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]…

[name_f]My[/name_f] first exposure to the name was [name_u]Remy[/name_u] LaBeau (Gambit from X-Men) so it’s very much a masculine [name_m]French[/name_m] name to me. I generally dislike names ending in ‘eee’ on girls. It sounds cutesy and childish.

I love the name [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a girl. I don’t think it sounds like a boy name at all. I loved it ever since [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] Wilde’s character on House was named [name_u]Remy[/name_u]. I say go for it. I’ve met quite a few girls named [name_u]Peyton[/name_u] and to me that is a boy’s name.

I prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a girl, and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] makes it even more feminine. If this is the name you love, keep it on your list!

Thanks again guys! I talked to my mom about it today, and she agreed that [name_u]Remy[/name_u] didn’t feel masculine at all, and at first she thought it was a girl name only.

I’m going to talk to the boyfriend about it tonight. If he agrees, you’ll be seeing the name in my signature
