Is This Weird? Also, Opinions on Jaqueline, Jenson, and Jory?

So, I have a thread called “Jolie?” and I kept getting that it meant ‘pretty’ in [name_u]French[/name_u]. I knew that, but until everyone said it, it didn’t register. Would it be weird if there was a girl called [name_f]Bonita[/name_f]? Yes, right? So does it make a difference that I would pronounce [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] Johl-ee? Would it be weird to be named [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] (‘pretty’) pronounced Johl-ee?

Also, I wanted to ask opinions on [name_f]Jaqueline[/name_f] ([name_m]Jack[/name_m]-linn or Zzhock-linn, I haven’t decided), [name_m]Jenson[/name_m], and [name_u]Jory[/name_u]. Jaqueline is for a girl; Jenson and Jory are for boys. What do you think of the names, and what are some nicknames?

Thanks so, so much! -[name_u]Sidney[/name_u]

Jolie - I don’t think this is weird! Admittedly I don’t know [name_u]French[/name_u], but to me the strongest association would be [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] [name_f]Jolie[/name_f], and even then it’s not that strong. I think [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] is well-known enough as a name that assuming you aren’t in [name_f]France[/name_f], it’s perfectly fine, and the meaning of ‘pretty’ is nice. (Also, I would be surprised to meet a young [name_f]Bonita[/name_f], but it used to be pretty popular! It was in the US top 200 in parts of the 1940s and 50s)

Jaqueline - [name_f]Jaqueline[/name_f] is nice. I prefer the [name_m]Jack[/name_m]-linn pronunciation to Zzhock-linn. I’ve also heard [name_m]Jack[/name_m]-uhlinn (3 syllables) which I like too. Nicknames could be [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_u]Jackie[/name_u], [name_f]Lin[/name_f], [name_f]Linny[/name_f], or even [name_f]Lina[/name_f].

Jenson - I like [name_m]Jenson[/name_m]! It’s handsome and fits with current styles without being popular. Nicknames could be [name_f]Jen[/name_f], [name_f]Jenny[/name_f], or [name_u]Sonny[/name_u].

Jory - I adore this name and never see it on NB! I love this, and think it’s super sweet and cool. Jor could be a nickname, but I don’t think it needs one.

It’d be a bit odd at first because I speak [name_u]French[/name_u] but there comes a point when people just stop making the association. At least that happens to me.

Linda is a pretty popular name that means “cute” in Spanish. I’ve met many people named [name_f]Linda[/name_f] (usually foreigners) and I don’t really find it weird anymore. It’s taken it’s position as a regular name in my brain.

I think [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] would only be an issue in a [name_u]French[/name_u]-speaking area. I assume that’s not you, so I’d say it’s fine. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of names mean beautiful, and actually [name_f]Bonita[/name_f] wouldn’t really be an issue either imo. I used to be friends with a girl named [name_u]Tirion[/name_u], which means beautiful/gentle in Welsh (she speaks Welsh).

[name_f]Jaqueline[/name_f] is okay, I don’t dislike it but I don’t like it either. I prefer the jack-eh-leen pronunciation personally, jack-linn would be [name_f]Jaclyn[/name_f] to me.

I love [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] for a boy, but not for a girl (assuming that’s the gender you like as this is in girl names). It could work on a girl, I just like it for a boy.

[name_u]Jory[/name_u] is pretty much the same as [name_m]Jenson[/name_m], but I prefer it as a nickname anyway. If you’re set on either [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] or [name_u]Jory[/name_u] for a girl, I’d pick [name_u]Jory[/name_u].

Jenson and [name_u]Jory[/name_u] were for boys’ names :slightly_smiling_face:. Thanks! No, I don’t live in a [name_u]French[/name_u]-speaking area, but I do live near a place with [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] in its name (I don’t ever intend to move). Would that be weird?

I like [name_u]Jackie[/name_u] for [name_f]Jaqueline[/name_f], that was actually [name_u]Jackie[/name_u] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]’s name and I think that’s a quite positive association. [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] for [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] is nice, too.

Not overly so, but maybe a little. Maybe spelling it [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] would fix that?

Okay. I don’t love slightly more creative spellings though. What if he went by [name_u]Sonny[/name_u], and [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] only formally? What do you think?

I like [name_f]Jolie[/name_f]. I don’t think it would be weird

Jory is cure, as is [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]

Oh, it makes my heart happy to see someone else who likes [name_u]Jory[/name_u]! I first heard it in a tv show, and fell in love. such a handsome, sweet name!! I also really like [name_m]Jenson[/name_m], but not as much as [name_u]Jory[/name_u]!

Jaqueline isn’t my favorite, I’m sorry. I do think the zzhock-linn pronunciation feels less dated to me! I also really like nn [name_m]Jac[/name_m]/Jack! I’ve known too girls who were [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] nn [name_m]Jac[/name_m]/Jack, and they both wore the name so well. I don’t think it’d be weird to use [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] at all! I like sweetcaroline’s example of [name_f]Linda[/name_f], and also want to add [name_f]Bella[/name_f] & [name_f]Belle[/name_f] are very common names as well! I also wouldn’t think [name_f]Bonita[/name_f] was all that weird.

Little confused by your post. I’ve met several girls called [name_f]Bonita[/name_f] and it’s really nice.

I think [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] works. If you’re pronouncing it Jolly as in: He’s a jolly good fellow. Then it’s a little weird

Jaqueline and [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] are great. [name_u]Jory[/name_u] is a bit strange. I just think of jaws or someone having big jaws they’re jaw-y or jory

Bonita is definitely used as a first name, so no, that would not be weird. I also don’t think the fact that [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] means pretty in [name_u]French[/name_u] is weird, especially if you aren’t pronouncing it like the [name_u]French[/name_u] word anyway.

I am not a big fan of [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]. Never really have been for whatever reason. I think [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] and [name_u]Jory[/name_u] are cute. Nicknames for [name_m]Jenson[/name_m]–maybe [name_u]Jay[/name_u] or [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. For [name_u]Jory[/name_u], I personally don’t think it needs a nickname because it kind of sounds like one to begin with, but perhaps [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_f]Ree[/name_f].

I think of Jolie as pronounced Johl-ee so maybe Im not following! I love Jolie. I think its very pretty just like its meaning, which I really like. It’s soft and feminine, simple and classic! I don’t think its bad at all thst it means pretty - a lot of names do. Maybe in France they find it weird but I would think Jolie is quite popular these days culturally, meaning people know its used as a name, not like its high ranking.

I love Jacqueline too with a French accent but most people aren’t going to pronounce it like that and you will get Jackie and Jack as nicknames whether you like it or not - so just something to consider. I love Jacqueline and it would make my list if I thought people would consistently say Jac-uh-leen and not Jac-lyn. But I feel there are just too many pronounciations and nicknames that I’m not great with. But in theory, I lovd Jacqueline.

Are Jenson and Jory girl names? They seem vastly different from the gorgeous, feminine Jolie and Jacqueline!

For boy names I really like them. I like Jory best. It goes with Jolie and Jacqueline better. Jenson seems a little dull in comparison!

As long as you’re not in a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking area I’m not sure what would be the issue with [name_f]Jolie[/name_f]? I’ve actually known a [name_f]Bonita[/name_f] lol and no one found it weird (it actually wasn’t that uncommon of a name a while back), and there are heaps and heaps of Bellas! Plus, word names are used – [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], etc. and nobody finds those super odd.

I also pronounce [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] Johl-ee. [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] and [name_u]Jory[/name_u] are boys names.

I know a girl named [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] and I never thought it was weird!

I’m not a fan of the other three names. I much prefer [name_f]Jolie[/name_f].

Not in a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking area, and the [name_f]Bella[/name_f]/word names point is very valid.

I agree with all of the posters who have brought up the other beauty names - there are plenty of names far more popular than [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] that mean pretty, beautiful, beauty, etc. I don’t think it’s strange at all.

Jenson/Jory - For a girl? I kind of like the vibe of [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] but might spell it [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]. [name_u]Jory[/name_u] just makes me think of [name_u]Jory[/name_u] Cassel from Game of Thrones.

I think [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] is a very pretty name and I don’t know many little girls who have that name now - mostly people around my age or older (30s). I think it deserves more recognition now!
