Is Topanga usable?

We have been to [name]Topanga[/name] [name]Canyon[/name] and love it. I was wondering if you think [name]Topanga[/name] is a usable name or will it forever be associated with Boy Meets World?

I think it will be associated with Boy Meets World and I don’t think it would be a good name unless you want your kid to be teased…

Sorry, I agree that it’s quite strongly associated with the TV show. It has a spunky, interesting sound, but without a nn I’m not sure how usable it is. :frowning: Maybe you could use it as a MN?

It’s most definitely associated with Boy Meets World, and the character was teased for it as well. I’d avoid it.

[name]Topanga[/name] [name]Canyon[/name] is awesome, but the name’s too strongly associated with Boy Meets World. Wait another 30 years and it could be usable.

I also love it, and I’m definitely going to use it, but for a pet.

That being said, I highly doubt our children will have any knowledge of Boy Meets World.

I think this name is unusable for at least a while longer…

I love the meaning but I was a huge fan of Boy Meets World so I think it is very attached to the show!

I don’t understand why the name would be unusuable just because it was on a television show? Isn’t that how most trendy names get popular? I don’t understand the logic.

I think it is usable. It is not like she was a bad character. I think it is a very cool name.

I know someone who has a daughter named [name]Topanga[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]. They actually got the name from “Boy Meets World” and loved it. I think if you really like the name then you should use it.

I’ve never even heard of Boy Meets Girl (I’m from [name]Mars[/name]), but I’ve lived very near [name]Topanga[/name] [name]Canyon[/name]. I would never use it as a name simply because I associate it with the place. For me, it’s the same as Malibu.

I would have to agree with the others that it is just too soon to use the name because people of a certain age (30’s) associate it so strongly with that show.

So torn over this: yes I think boy meets world but I have to agree with the pp that pointed out that soo many names come from movies or tv, why is this any different? The character I remember as being super smart and kind… On the flip side, it’s a very unique name so the association may feel stronger. As long as you can deal with the frequent “oh like boy meets world?” I’d say go for it!

I’ve never watched it, did not even hear of it until now…so yeah. I live in Aus, does that help?

For me I would use it as a pets name, no offence, its cute but I wouldn’t use it for a person.

I actually didn’t even think of the TV show until you mentioned it. Our neighbor’s daughter is 13 and her name is [name]Topanga[/name] so that’s what I immediately thought of. She’s a super-sweet tomboy if that helps =)

I always liked the name, and I’ve toyed with it as a middle in a few combinations. For me the Boy Meets World association is really strong, but its not like kids growing up today would make that association, so I don’t think that’s a reason to avoid it necessarily. Of course plenty of parents will, but as another poster said, she wasn’t a villain or anything.

I think the Boy Meets World association is pretty much unavoidable, especially since they’re making the spinoff show Girl Meets World, which is about [name]Cory[/name] and [name]Topanga[/name]'s family…

“That’s just I want, to be [name]Topanga[/name]'s boyfriend. And then we can name our children Chewbacca and Plankton.” — [name]Cory[/name] [name]Matthews[/name]

I think its useable. The kids that your daughter will be growing up with probably wont even have a clue about the show Boy Meets World.

It doesn’t bother me, but I didn’t grow up with the show — and I’m sure children these days won’t know who the character is, either.

The kid’s friend’s parents and teachers might make the association, but his peers won’t. So the risk of teasing won’t be huge.

I think it’s an awesome middle name.
As a first, I’d say it’s up there with [name]Blossom[/name] as feeling both super hippy and super associated with a TV.

If I met a kid with the name, I’d probably laugh and tell my family about it, but in all honesty I like it a lot more than a ton of the creative names and spellings out there, so I can’t discourage it completely
