Is Tyrian too entwined with GoT?

Greetings from a very chilly (but no snow) US [name_u]East[/name_u] [name_u]Coast[/name_u]!

So, I’ve never watched Game of Thrones but in doing research on a name we’re considering for our boys’ list, I have come across the same/similar name that is a character in the series.

So now I need opinions: Would Tyrian automatically make the majority of people think of GoT? I love the nickname [name_m]Ty[/name_m] and this is the only full name we’ve found that my husband is even mildly considering. I don’t really want [name_m]Ty[/name_m] to be the full name, though (vis a vis [name_m]Ty[/name_m] Cobb).

I’d love any input from both fans and non-fans of the show!

I must say that Tyrian is very cool - and [name_m]Ty[/name_m] is such an inspired nickname!

I’m gonna say yes, unfortunately. I have never seen the show, but my close relative’s dog is called Tyrian and a surprising amount comment on GoT when they meet him! I expect it would be the same on a human.

However, I don’t think the GoT connection should completely deter the name if you really like it. Tyrian purple (aka royal purple, very valued in Medieval times) is a color, as well!
Also, when people meet Tyrian, the association would wear off in their minds and Tyrian would be the boy they know, not the character.

[name_u]Ive[/name_u] also never seen Game of Thrones. Tyrian does sound cool but some images are hard to shake off.

I have this issue with [name_f]Aerith[/name_f]. I’m considering changing it to [name_f]Ardith[/name_f].

As someone who’s never read or watched GoT, I wouldn’t associate it with that (in contrast to say, [name_f]Cersei[/name_f] or [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f], which I know of, despite knowing next to nothing about the series). I also gave it a quick google, and the character doesn’t immediately come up

I think for now it would be but I’m unsure whether GoT will linger in people’s minds say a decade from now… It’s certainly less tied to it than [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f]

I’m prounouncing it “Tier-ee-an” is that how the character/ your close relative’s dog (ooof) is?

I think it’s because it’s spelled Tyrion…unless there’s a Tyrian I’ve never come across in the show…

but I’m pronouncing it “Tier-ee-in” in my head. Is that the same? Yes, it is at least less tied than other names.

(I just replied to this and said yes, but I just said the dog’s name out loud and realised it’s not :joy:)

We pronounce Tyrian like ‘TIH-ree-an’! I’m not sure how the character’s name is pronounced, though, because I’ve never watched GoT.

Yeah, I guess I’m saying it “Ti-ree-uhn” according to Google pronunciation that’s how it’s pronounced. So maybe it’s not the same as the character. I’m so confused now lol

Haha sorry to confuse you! I’m not sure if this will clear anything up, but

the ‘i’ as in ‘fridge’ or ‘sit’ is how we say it.

I just did a google search and this video says the character’s name: https://youtu.be/KuO1jID3Qfc

Well shoot it is really similar…

Dang it. Okay. Thanks so much!

This is a really good point, especially since I heard so many were disappointed in the series finale…Thanks! We’re not even pregnant yet so it’s entirely possible the name would be its own thing in a decade or more when it matters.

i can see how it could be, but that’s not my first thought, or an overwhelming one, especially since the character’s name is spelt tyrion. i do think of game of thrones, but kind of in the way that annabeth makes me think of percy jackson - she comes to mind, but it still feels like a ‘real’ name, and wouldn’t make any assumptions about what the child was named for (unlike e.g. khaleesi). i agree that got will likely diminish as an association in the coming years. my first thought/association was tyrian purple.

(also for context i never watched got all the way through, but my parents were really into it as it was coming out, and i saw and heard about a lot of bits and pieces, including watching basically the entire final season)

I wouldn’t think of GoT, but I’ve never watched the show! The only character names I know are [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f], [name_u]Arya[/name_u] and [name_m]Jon[/name_m]. Honestly, I’d assume it was like… a cool, modernized version of [name_m]Tyrone[/name_m], or some obscure Latin origin name like [name_u]Florian[/name_u].

Tarian is a Welsh name meaning shield that is similar but could still get you to Ty if you’re interested  (at least for me the “T” and the “i” is enough to get to Ty.)

I’m a fan of ASoIaF (the books) + [name_f]English[/name_f] is not my first language and Tyrian doesn’t remind of GoT at all. It feels like a recently invented name, but I have no idea if it is.

I love the name [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]. Nickname [name_m]Ty[/name_m] is the most obvious choice.

I haven’t watched GoT (just the HotD spinoff, lol), but I’m a big nerd and enjoyer of nerd content; when I hear “Tyrian,” my mind autocompletes it with “Lannister.”

I haven’t watched the show. When I saw the title I only read Tyrian at first and I immediately thought: isn’t that someone from Game of Thrones?

I haven’t watched Game of Thrones and wouldn’t make the connection if I heard the name Tyrian!
