I love the look and sound of [name_u]Virgil[/name_u], as well as the literary and historical connection… but it’s one letter away from “virgin”. Is it just too mean to use for a little boy today?
to be honest i think it’s fine! if virginia can be in the US top 550 and not be too close to virgin, then so can virgil. is there a chance he might get some jokes about his name? yes, but i don’t think it’s so bad that people would only ever hear his name and think virgin or anything extreme like that
Don’t think so, the captain of the [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] national soccer team is called [name_u]Virgil[/name_u] van Dijk, but he only puts [name_u]Virgil[/name_u] on his jersey. Never seen anyone making jokes about it, [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] or international fans, and he is someone who is in the spotlight
That’s a tough one, always assume kids are cruel and can make fun of ANY name. I know a teenaged [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] who gets teased that way but she’s able to brush it off. I love the name [name_u]Amos[/name_u] but alas… Anus in inevitable.
[name_f]Vintage[/name_f] names, especially for boys, are really coming back so I could see [name_u]Virgil[/name_u] in a classroom. It’s a strong name, easy to spell, and still familiar enough to not be misheard over the phone. If it’s going to bother you or you’d feel embarrassed introducing him assuming the teasing would come, then maybe not, but if it’s worth the “risk”, it’s a good name and use it with confidence.
While I feel like it is super rare for a baby these days, it is usable.
I actually know of a newborn baby [name_u]Virgil[/name_u]. When I first heard his name, I said hmmm and to NB I went to research. He is the only baby or even little kid I had heard of with [name_u]Virgil[/name_u] as a name.
Reminds me of the word ‘vigil’ which is a word to do with staying awake or a religous ceremony.
[name_u]Or[/name_u], as I am guessing that you named from, the poet.
I was reading this post and it said to go on to your front lawn and yell ‘[name,] come inside, ready for dinner!’ and see if it sounds right for you.
I immediately think of the late [name_u]Virgil[/name_u] Abloh, a very well know fashion designer that tragically passed away from cancer.
He makes me love the name!
