Is your name Emily or Lucy?

Would love to hear feedback on what you like or don’t like about your name!

Wow, thank you so much for such a thorough review! Thank you for sharing both the positives and negatives. I’m sorry for the bullying that you did experience, but glad to hear that it was only for a short time. Kids are great at finding creative ways to be mean, unfortunately. I agree with you about the positives outweighing the negatives and feel more confidence about potentially choosing the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

Would you mind also sharing your thoughts on the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f]? It may not be your naming style, but I’m curious what a “Lucy” thinks of that name as well :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve never been an Emily (nor have I known all that many, despite it being supposedly the top girl name of my generation), but here are my thoughts:

Positive:

  1. It’s really pretty. I like the sound of Emily. Emmie and Millie are cute nicknames. I actually tried to get my parents to name my youngest brother this as a kid, before I knew he was a brother and not a sister

  2. It has some of that same classic quality as Lucy – while there are a lot of Emilys now, it has always been in the top 300 girl names, so I think it ages well, and won’t be tied too much to gen Z.

  3. One common spelling, and one pronunciation. Not a confusing or difficult name.

  4. I can’t think of any good way to make fun of this name. It doesn’t sound like anything bad.

Negative:

  1. The meaning, “rival”, seems not great to me, but I also know a lot of people don’t notice or care, so maybe this isn’t a problem.

  2. At #16 on the charts, it’s a little bit more common than I’d like, but if it was my top favorite name that wouldn’t stop me from using it.

Overall it’s nice, it’s like a 7/10. There are no bad options here. I would probably like being Emily if that was my name. I would also recommend this name to people on the site if I thought they’d like it.

If I may elaborate on that! [name_f]Mae[/name_f] originated as a nickname for [name_f]Mary[/name_f], which is of uncertain meaning. There are many theories/versions of Mary’s origins & meaning, including “wished for child”, “rebelliousness”, “beloved”, “sea of bitterness”, “bitterness”, “drop of the sea” or “love”. It was also traditionally used as a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], meaning “pearl”. So, a handful of negative meanings, some neutral ones as well as some positive ones!

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Emily[/name_f] so I’m probably going to be biased but I love it. I think it feels bright, classic and jolly.

I think it was about the most common name when I was born but nowadays I would be surprised but delighted to hear a newborn with the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f]!

Also a couple of years ago I did a placement in a hospital where there were a lot of elderly patients and two of them said that I had a nice/beautiful name! Probably because it’s less well known in that generation.

Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know!
