Ok, so, on my winter names thread, lesliemarion gave me the wonderful suggestion of [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]. I quite like it, but, when I mentioned it, literally less than five minutes ago, to my younger sister and best friend, both connected it to a girl of African decent, due to the Disney show [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], where [name_u]Zuri[/name_u] (who is from Uganda on the show) has the name [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] as a middle name.
Does the name [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] bring images of [name_f]Africa[/name_f] and African American women to mind? (It’s not a bad thing, but, considering I am completely and totally Caucasian, and I don’t actually know anyone of African decent, the odds of me having a child who has darker skin are very, very small.).
I’d always heard that it had Greek and Polish origins, so it’s distinctly European (mainly eastern European) to me. But I agree it could work on any nationality.
I know an older Latina woman with this name. I think that it’s fine for anybody and I would just think of it as a zippy but interesting Z name if I heard it on a little baby who was white looking.
I looked it up on behindthename.com.
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] is apparently of greek origin and means “life of [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]” or “life”.
Greek names are used widely across the globe, not just people with greek heritage.
Because they know of one character with that name who happens to be of African decent doesn’t mean it taints the whole name. (It’s not like you are asking about Abisola or anything like that).
