Is Zephyr too close to Vesper?

Our daughter is [name]Vesper[/name], and if she had been a boy she would have been [name]Zephyr[/name]. Now that we are on round 2, I feel like naming her something with an -er sounding at the end has ruled out [name]Zephyr[/name], but my husband is still rooting for it. Thoughts?

I do think [name]Vesper[/name] and [name]Zephyr[/name] are too close. You could go with one of its longer variants. I think Zephyros for a boy is even more beautiful and unexpected, and it’s the original Greek form (god of the [name]West[/name] wind.) There’s also a feminine form- [name]Zephyra[/name] (“zeh FEER ah”)
Or use [name]Zephyr[/name] as a middle name.

Yes, [name]Vesper[/name] and [name]Zephyr[/name] are too close.

Yes they sound too much alike

As you spend the majority of life not being introduced along with your siblings it doesn’t matter terribly if they are very close, I know sisters Jinder and Shinder who have no problems. The person it most effects is you, their mother; I think you might end up tripping over that tounge twister quite a bit, try yelling ‘[name]Vesper[/name]! Zephyer! Come here!’ Three times, very quickly - I think it would end up ‘jester, err, zesper, I mean Vepher! Come here!’. I know I mix my daughters’ names up all the time and they are nothing alike…

It might be my British accent, but it sounds fine to me. Lots of siblings have similar names, I don’t see it as a problem at all.

I think they sound about as a like as [name]Maria[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name]. [name]Vesper[/name] and Zepher share the same ending but since the main emphasis of the names is not only in different places but also sounds very different Ves- vs -eph- (at least when I say them) I think they definitely different. I think they would be a great and very specific sib-set -> I’d probably consider what a third sibling might be named. It would have to be equally cool as both of these. Maybe Zepher could make a great mn instead.

They sound far too close to me. I want to elaborate so that it’s more helpful to you, but I can’t articulate it other than: WOW, those are really close!

Too close in sound.

Yes, they are very similar in sound. I would personally use it as a middle name, but really it’s up to you whether the similarity bothers you or not.

Yup. Too close. [name]One[/name] time I saw [name]Vesper[/name] on here, clicked on the name and was surprised it didn’t mean “wind.” Then I realized I had gotten it mixed with [name]Zephyr[/name]. Apparently the sounds and feel of these words crossed in my mind.

Thanks so much for all your replies ladies…kind of a mixed bag. I don’t think it’s going to work for a middle name, we have some family names to cover there. I’m going to have to keep thinking, I loved [name]Zephyr[/name] for so long but loved [name]Vesper[/name] just as much and since a girl arrived I felt compelled to use it! EEEEEEk the best news might be for us to have a girl and I won’t have to worry!

Unfortunately, they are very close (based on IPA [the International Phonetic Alphabet]). I would be happy to help further. Please inbox me. I believe you are on the right path!
