Isaac or Ian?

We really like the name [name]Isaac[/name], but it’s a little popular these days and our last name begins with Mc, so it doesn’t flow quite as well as other names that don’t end with that hard c. We were thinking that [name]Ian[/name] had a nice flow to it and wasn’t quite as trendy these days, but my husband thought it sounded little plain (I kind on like the simplicity of I though), any thoughts?

I like [name]Ian[/name] a lot. I always thought it sounded distinguished, not plain at all.

I normally like [name]Isaac[/name] more than [name]Ian[/name], but given the popularity and that your last name begins with a Mc, I would definitely suggest [name]Ian[/name].

I do find [name]Ian[/name] very plain and…middle-aged-ish (for want of a better description!). I’d go with [name]Isaac[/name] or something else altogether.

[name]Ian[/name] is one of my all time favorites dating back to childhood! I love it so much. It is handsome and uncommon and blows the overused [name]Isaac[/name] out of the water imo!

I like [name]Isaac[/name] better…Have you considered [name]Isaiah[/name]…[name]Eli[/name]…[name]Abram[/name]…[name]Ewan[/name]?

[name]Ian[/name] is ranked 75, and [name]Isaac[/name] is ranked 35, so not that much difference. On a purely anecdotal level, I’ve met three [name]Ian[/name]'s this year, and no [name]Isaac[/name]'s (in this Under 10 category. But names tend to move in pockets. I have a feeling [name]Ian[/name] gets more use in hipper crowds, and [name]Isaac[/name] gets more use in more conservative crowds).

I think [name]Isaac[/name] is much more distinguished. [name]Ian[/name] is cool, but blends into all of the other Celtic names that have been immensely popular for the last fifteen to twenty years. It does sound like it could theoretically clash with your surname, though. [name]How[/name] about [name]Isaiah[/name], [name]Ewan[/name], or [name]Ivan[/name]?

[name]Love[/name] [name]Ian[/name]. Yet is is more plain than [name]Isaac[/name], but that’s a good thing. It has a simpleness to it that makes it great. To add my own experience to the popularity aspect: I know both two Ians and two Isaacs, but the [name]Ian[/name]'s are my both my age (20+) and the Isaacs are 10 and 4 (roughly). [name]Hope[/name] that helps a bit!

I find [name]Ian[/name] classy and handsome, and much prefer it to [name]Isaac[/name], which I find overdone.

[name]Ian[/name] is a great choice, I say go for it!

Another vote for [name]Ian[/name]! It’s simple yet it has a lot of character!

[name]Isaac[/name] doesn’t sound attractive to me (eye sack).
I think that [name]Ian[/name] can sound rather on the plain side.

What about:
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Brian[/name]
[name]Christian[/name]
[name]Damian[/name]
[name]Dorian[/name]
[name]Finnian[/name]
[name]Florian[/name]
[name]Ignatius[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Killian[/name]

My favorite name that sort of contains [name]Ian[/name] is [name]Keane[/name].

I really like [name]Ian[/name], too. Sophisticated and handsome. Especially with your surname.

I like [name]Ian[/name]. I’m biased though, my younger son is named [name]Ian[/name]. It fits him well. I first heard the name in the movie Weird [name]Science[/name]. It was [name]Robert[/name] Downey, [name]Jr[/name].'s character’s name. He wasn’t a nice character, but I loved the name and glad I got a chance to use it.

I love [name]Isaac[/name], but NOT with a Mc- name. [name]Ian[/name] is very handsome and would sound terrific with a Mc- name, assuming no rhyming element in the name. I am picky about names being substantial, and [name]Ian[/name] fits that bill just fine.

I prefer [name]Ian[/name], it was on my short list for my son 7 years ago. I don’t like it as a nn for anything, I think it’s fine and perfect on its own!

[name]Both[/name] names are lovely but I prefer [name]Isaac[/name]. As far as popularity I realize [name]Isaac[/name] is a bit more popular though personally I know of more Ians. Someone suggested [name]Ivan[/name] which I love too and think it deserves more attention  Either way it sounds like you will have a very handsome name!

I really love [name]Isaac[/name]. I don’t think the Mc- if your last name will clash.
