I like this name but is it too pretentious sounding?
Does it sound feminine?
It doesn’t to me but I have seen some people seem to think so.
Nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]?
Or is that also too girly?

I think it is a beautiful male name.
The thing about it is that it’s highly reminiscent of [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]… which is what people will associate it with.
As it is not a popular name, and the female versions are, that is what people think of.
I agree it is a masculine name in the style of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] vs [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].
But we are in the gender-bending name age where [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] (beau as in the male version of belle) is a female name.
I think it is masculine sounding, and I googled it and saw that it is a legitimate name with tons of history behind it.
I would wait it out to see what other people say 1st.
But my vote is it is a lovely masculine name; [name_f]One[/name_f] that I actually love.
No I do not think it is pretentious… it is no more pretentious than [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
I may go with something a little more spunky for a nickname like [name_m]Sid[/name_m] to distinguish him from all the [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Izzy[/name_f]s
not pretentious, but most boys would be embarrassed to have such a feminine sounding name.
There are some in my family tree. It’s a very old-fashioned name, for good and for bad. It has a Victorian-era steampunk quality to it, to me, like [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] or [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]. I like it. The other option for a NN I thought of aside from [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] was [name_m]Ike[/name_m] - I’ve known plenty of Ikes who were Isaacs but also some Isaiahs and I think an [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]?
I prefer it to [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], which it reminds me of a lot. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] doesn’t do it for me.
I don’t think some Izzys being Isabellas ruins [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] for boys any more than some Jacquelines going by [name_m]Jack[/name_m] ruined [name_m]Jack[/name_m] for boys. Or [name_u]Billie[/name_u] ruined [name_m]William[/name_m]? Most male names have either feminizations with an -a on the end or a female name that shares a nickname?
I’d go with the more conventional [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], or [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]. You could use the same nn, [name_u]Izzy[/name_u].
I love [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]. I know a very handsome teen whose name is Hyperion [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] and his friends call him [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. I think it’s very cool and not pretentious at all. [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] could also be [name_m]Sid[/name_m] if you wanted a more boyish nickname.
I like the nicknames [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] and [name_m]Sid[/name_m] but [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] sounds too feminine to me to use for a boy.
This thread is breaking my heart… I love the name [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] for a boy
I know someone with the name [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] who goes by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. He’s in his late 70’s though, so it sounds very old fashioned to me.
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] for a boy is awesome. I don’t see how it’s any different from [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], which is a popular choice on this website.
Thanks guys.
I don’t happen to get a girl vibe from the name [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]… It actually feels quite manly to me.
I also don’t get a whole lot of girl vibes from “[name_u]Izzy[/name_u]”
It just feels neutral.
I suppose I worry that there will be a whole bunch of girl [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]'s around by the time he’s in school.
My sons are [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m]… I plan on another baby soon and I think a little [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] sounds perfect.
Thanks for all the opinions
I thought it was a girl name, it is apparently a very old traditional male name however lol. I would not use it as it sounds very feminine to me (I think isabell, [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], isadora, etc.) and I find izzy to be a feminine nickname. Sorry!
I hear what you’re saying but I guess I don’t find the [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] thing off-putting (and I like the name [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] for a girl) because soooo many male names have feminine equivalents, you know?
[name_f]Isidora[/name_f] - [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f] - [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] - [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] - [name_m]Michael[/name_m]
[name_f]Thomasin[/name_f] - [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] - [name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_u]Simone[/name_u] - [name_m]Simon[/name_m]
I don’t think it takes away from a male name for there to be a feminine version? What make names would be left? Eek!
I really like [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]. It’s such a strong, masculine and handsome name for a boy. I don’t think [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is girly, it’s also a common nickname for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] but you can use Dor or [name_m]Sid[/name_m] for Isodore as well.
I know a 6 year boy old called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. Not short for anything. His parents are both creatives. As far as I’m awear he doesn’t get teased for it.
[name_m]Isadore[/name_m] is a great name, and is cute with [name_m]Otto[/name_m] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u]!
Good luck.
I’m not sure I would have said embarrassed but I would say it’s not easy name for a guy. With the overwhelming popularity of [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and her derivatives I fear that non-name-efficianatos would assume he’s a girl. I can see this being particularly trying during adolescence.
Personally I think [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is a rather handsome name but would do better a MN or GP and not a FN.
