[name]Just[/name] wondering what the consensus is on [name]Isla[/name]?
I previously have dismissed it because it seemed really trendy, but I have to say… it seems to be leveling off a bit in trendiness. I haven’t heard it mentioned as much as in the past couple of years, and it’s hovering around the same popularity as one of my other choices: [name]Eliza[/name].
I have no idea if Dh will even go for it (he doesn’t do well with non-intuitive pronunciations, but is teach-able. Though he can’t prn. “aloe” correctly to save his life. Weirdo.), which leads me to my next question - is it popular enough now that the pronunciation is less of an issue in the US? It seems obvious to me.
I like that it’s very different than our other choices - softer, breathier and more feminine. But still a bit quirkier than [name]Ella[/name], [name]Bella[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Lila[/name], etc.
Definite top choices are:
[name]Eliza[/name] [name]June[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]June[/name] - dh’s fav., but still a bit harsh to my ear.
I really like [name]Isla[/name] [name]Kate[/name]!!! Too cute I also like [name]Lila[/name] from your list. I say go for it. If you still question it here are some others you may like
I love the name [name]Isla[/name]! I have only met 2; one is my cousin who is quite a bit younger than me (I think she’s 6 now) and one went to college with me (so she’s about 26). I don’t think this name is all that popular/trendy, it just gets a lot of notice on Nameberry. I think it has become familiar enough that most people will know how to pronounce it, plus it’s like the word “island” so it seems fairly intuitive to me anyway.
I love it too. I hear it a lot on nameberry but I’ve never met one in the US. I like [name]Isla[/name] [name]June[/name] and [name]Isla[/name] [name]Kate[/name]. I have [name]Isla[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] currently in my sig.
I would worry about pronunciation a bit. Most people have heard of [name]Isla[/name] [name]Fisher[/name], a lot who have seen it only in print and who know basic spanish would think it’s pronounced ees-la. I wouldnt let that deter you though! I think it is becoming more familiar in the US, while remaining distinct.
Thanks for the feedback so far! I ran it past Dh and he didn’t say no… which is a good sign. I told him to let it percolate in his mind for a bit. He did immediately ask me if we could spell it differently, to which I said “hmm, maybe, let me see what I can find…” but there’s really no other way to spell it that would make sense to me.
I’m glad to hear that it’s not as popular in real life as it is on nameberry, from what I’ve read so far. I gather it is much more popular in Australia and Great [name]Britain[/name] than the US.
I love all three names ([name]Isla[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Hazel[/name]), and I think they’re all in a sweet spot of well-known enough but not too popular. I know they all get props here on Nameberry, but I don’t know any kinds with those names in real life. I am sure some people would have prn probs with [name]Isla[/name], but I think it is becoming a more recognized/known name in the States, and shouldn’t be a real issue.
I believe [name]Ayla[/name] is pronounced the same as [name]Isla[/name], and I actually liked it a lot… until I made the association with [name]Kayla[/name], and realized ppl would say it that way all the time.
If you love it, I say go for it. I may be biased though - my daughter is [name]Isla[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]. And I haven’t regretted the decision once! Most people haven’t heard it when I tell them (we’re in [name]Alberta[/name], [name]Canada[/name]), but it’s often complimented. The pronunciation does throw some people off if they read the name first, but I find once you correct them they feel pretty silly (and will remember from then on out!) It’s not like that letter structure is unfamiliar to our language either (island, aisle).
I definitely like that it feels a bit more modern than my other choices. I have this love/hate thing with older names. There is something refreshing about [name]Isla[/name] that feels somewhere between new and old
[name]Just[/name] bumping for more thoughts on the name -
And since my last name starts with an S, do you thing the initials IKS or ICS ([name]Kate[/name] or [name]Cate[/name]) would be a problem? After sleeping on it a day, I’m liking [name]Isla[/name] a lot more and feeling like it could be a real contender
I have an [name]Isla[/name] [name]June[/name], and I still love her name! We’ve heard of other Islas but have only met one- we get just as many people saying they’ve never heard of the name before as people who say they know an [name]Isla[/name] (my elderly next door neighbor’s mother was named [name]Isla[/name], interestingly). I think those of us who frequent sites like Nameberry think names like [name]Isla[/name] are super popular, when in the general population they aren’t, at least in the US. We do get some pronunciation issues (on her birth announcement, we included a paragraph with her name “story” since it’s kind of unique, along with the pronunciation so at least the people in her extended family would know how to pronounce it), but at least once we tell people it’s basically like island without the -nd they get it. And, I don’t actually mind Ees-la or Is-la anyway so it doesn’t bother me. My husband was super against names that weren’t immediately obvious how to say at first, but I gave him the choice between our final 2 names and he picked [name]Isla[/name] (although as I’ve mentioned, there’s a story behind it so I’m sure that swayed it a bit). I think [name]Isla[/name] perfectly fits my girl’s personality, and I’m really happy with my choice. If you like it, go for it! (unless you’re in my school district
I love [name]Isla[/name]! I strongly considered it for my daughter. I’ve met one who spells it [name]Isla[/name], her parents told me some people don’t know how to pronounce it at first but it doesn’t seem to have been a huge problem. I know another who spells it [name]Ila[/name].
[name]Isla[/name] is very pretty. As some other post mentioned it is much more popular in Australia. Well, maybe when I live! I know 4 girls named [name]Isla[/name]. Two under 5, A teenager and a girl in her 20s. There is no issue here as to how to pronounce it. [name]Isla[/name] [name]Fisher[/name] was a well known Australian actress in a popular soapie when I was growing up (before she hit the movies in the US) so people were very aware of the name.
I actually love [name]Isla[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] from you list! No problems with your initials!!
Yay! Thanks for the feedback and stories. It’s funny because normally I would prefer a name not to be popular, but in this case, it seems the more popular it gets the less of a problem the pronunciation and spelling issue will be.
I talked to dh about it last night and he’s not super sold yet. The silent S is causing him angst. He says when he pictures the name, he wants to say Is-la. But apparently, he’s ok with the [name]Eila[/name] spelling because he’s familiar with and knows how to pronounce [name]Eileen[/name]. So for right now, I think we are putting [name]Isla[/name] / [name]Eila[/name] on the list… and I’m crossing my fingers that he gets a little more used to the [name]Isla[/name].
I swear he thinks I’m torturing him on purpose, but I truly just want to find the perfect name for the baby. [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] are ok for me, but something is missing.
I have never met an [name]Isla[/name] or heard of anyone using that name in my area. I think [name]Isla[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Isla[/name] [name]Kate[/name] is gorgeous! I will say that [name]Eliza[/name] is one of my favorite girls names and you can’t go wrong with it.
I love [name]Hazel[/name] [name]June[/name]. [name]Isla[/name] used to be my girl name about 5 years ago but it has gotten SO trendy…and if it not [name]Isla[/name], it’s [name]Kyla[/name], [name]Skyla[/name], [name]Lila[/name], [name]Myla[/name] - which just sound too similiar to keep [name]Isla[/name] as a special, unique name.
