Issues With Our Name List

My husband and I are TTC and currently working on our name list. We’ve already agreed that if we were to have a girl we’d name her [name]Winifred[/name]. This is in honor of his late grandfather, [name]Fred[/name], and also because my husband is a huge [name]Joss[/name] [name]Weldon[/name] fan. The problem is when we get to boys names. He suggested the name [name]Wesley[/name], which I initially loved until I realized that he got this name from the show [name]Angel[/name]. The issue is that on the show the characters [name]Wesley[/name] and [name]Winifred[/name] are romantic interests. I think that would be awkward, but he disagrees. He says that since the show already ended a few years ago, our children would likely never see it anyways. What do you think, would it be too weird or am I over thinking this?

I, personally wouldn’t use it for that reason. I’ve never seen that show, but if I found out about that I wouldn’t be able to forget it. Those types of things bother me and if I have any strong association with a name I generally stop liking it. But, I think it depends on how much it’s bothering you and how much associations bother you in general. If you tend to not mind, then it probably won’t matter in the long run. Also, your husband could be right. That show will be over 15 years old by the time they’re teens, so they might never see it. But it’s up to you on if you like the name enough to take that chance. That’s just my opinion, though :).

[name]Do[/name] you even like the name? Would you want to use it if it didn’t have that association? Or is it not really your style? Also, something to consider is maybe having the second child’s name be of significance to you, since [name]Winifred[/name] honors your husband’s side.

I love the name [name]Winifred[/name]. I don’t think [name]Wesley[/name] really goes with [name]Winifred[/name] goes as a sibling set though.

I’m back and forth on this… If you love both names I say who cares. [name]Heath[/name] Ledger’s parents named him and his sister after [name]Heathcliff[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name] of Wuthering Heights

That’s where I remember [name]Wesley[/name] from!! (saw it on forum just now didn’t know why i remember it being so geeky… I don’t like it at all. Stick with [name]Winifred[/name]. Go [name]Frederick[/name] or something. The both can honour the grandfather!!

I would probably avoid using two names that are linked romantically, whether it be in literature or television, if i knew about it. I love [name]Darcy[/name] and I love [name]Elizabeth[/name], but I wouldn’t use them together for siblings. [name]Wesley[/name] and [name]Winifred[/name] aren’t as bad, because it is a tv show that will probably fade away (I love that show and [name]Joss[/name] Whedon’s stuff too btw).

[name]Joss[/name] Whedon is a genius  That being said, I don’t think [name]Wesley[/name] and [name]Winifred[/name] really “go together” as a “sib set”, that might not matter to you though! I do believe that if the character of [name]Fred[/name] did inspire the name choice of [name]Winifred[/name] and your daughter finds out, it would be silly to assume she will never watch the show! (Also a little sad, because [name]Angel[/name] is a great show!) I like [name]Wesley[/name] on its own as a name, I know a little boy named [name]Wesley[/name] and I think of him before I think of the character [name]Wesley[/name].

I don’t know the tv show so I wouldn’t ever associate these 2 names together. I love [name]Winifred[/name] nn [name]Winnie[/name], but if you wanted to change things up a bit, you could use [name]Frederica[/name] nn [name]Freddie[/name] or [name]Rica[/name] instead. For [name]Wesley[/name], what about [name]West[/name], [name]Winston[/name], or [name]Winslow[/name] instead?
