Currently too excited to work well[name_f][/name_f] because NFL kickoff for my Birds [name_f][/name_f] starts tonight!! [name_f][/name_f] So of course I came to Nameberry instead
[name_f][/name_f]
In their honor, I thought it would be fun to have a bird themed thread—would love to hear all your favorite bird names! [name_f][/name_f] The common, the unusual, your thoughts on bird names in general—I’d love to hear it!
[name_f][/name_f]
It only seems appropriate to start with [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] and [name_m]Adler[/name_m], given their meaning, but I’d love to hear all your favorites too!
[name_f][/name_f]
Thanks berries, and GO BIRDS! [name_f][/name_f] (Ok but also go whatever team you love, because I’m not the normal cringy Eagles fan )
I was just talking to a friend about how cool bird names are! [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Mavis[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Meadowlark[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Skylark[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Lark[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Starling[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Sparrow[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Kestrel[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Merlin[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Dove[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Wren[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Nightingale[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Chickadee[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]Bluebird [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Hummingbird[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jay[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Finch[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Owl[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Robin[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Raven[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]Some of these definitely work better as middle names but I love them. I also like the sound of Albatross, very grand Albus/Alistair/Ambrose kind of feel, but the literary connotations make it a no go.
I love bird names. [name_m]Nature[/name_m] names are beautiful and evocative without being too bold. Birds are often associated with grace and freedom and a bird name can bestow a child with these ideals with more subtlety than [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] (names I do also like). It’s kind of a metaphorical virtue name with a little outdoorsy panache.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite bird-word names:
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- I think [name_f]Swan[/name_f] is such an underrated middle name. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Swan[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Swan[/name_f], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] Swan… It’s a little unexpected but so graceful. I also really like [name_f]Swanhilde[/name_f], though I get that that’s a tougher sell.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- I can’t use this one, but if I could… I love how high energy [name_f]Lark[/name_f] is and the association with adventurousness and fun.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Raven[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- Ravens are clever, resourceful, loyal… All amazing traits to inspire in a little one. And [name_f]Raven[/name_f] has the same sounds as [name_f]Rae[/name_f], [name_f]Rachel[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Haven[/name_f], and a little dark aesthetic style… What’s not to love?
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite names meaning bird:
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- Kind of a villainess in mythology, but she’s been getting more nuanced portrayals in modern media. Sort of a new feminist figure like [name_f]Medusa[/name_f] but without the monstrous connotations. And I love the silky sound.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- Ducks are adorable and considering [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a species of duck, one of her many nicknames could be Duckie or Duck. I wouldn’t use Duck as a name alone, but as a baby nickname it’s incredibly cute, especially as so many babies start out with pouty little faces and adorable waddles.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Dove[/name_f] is a great name and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is a rare example of a name that’s soft and gentle but all boy. I love boys names that end in ah and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is particularly bright. I feel like it’s kind of a fresher little brother to [name_m]Jesse[/name_m].
I think the majority of my favourites have already been mentioned, but I’ll add this one, which I don’t think has been posted…
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Branwen[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- a Welsh name meaning ‘white raven’. I absolutely love it. And yes, it’d probably get confused with [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] all the time. Don’t care I love it.
[name_f][/name_f]
NB: Good luck to the Eagles tonight. I love NFL, got into it through my best friend’s dad, who is American. He’s originally from [name_f]Chicago[/name_f], so he’s a massive Bears fan, as is my best friend and her siblings. So I thought ‘hey, guess that’ll be my team then’. Big mistake, but when I pick a side, I remain loyal!
[name_m]Wren[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- this was my absolute top favorite name for a girl when I was in college. It’s no longer top of the list but I still have a soft spot for it.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Dove[/name_f] (I love this for a middle name!)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- a favorite name of mine that just happens to also be a bird name
Thank you for sharing all your favorites, lovelies! [name_f][/name_f] So many of these are such big favorites of mine too!
[name_f][/name_f]
@sammaegre[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- I love all the lark names! [name_f][/name_f] Also a big fan of the [name_m]Danish[/name_m] [name_f]Lærke[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Hummingbird[/name_f] is one of those REALLY wordy names that I don’t think I could use but I’ve always really liked it. [name_f][/name_f] There was a berry a few years back who named her son [name_m]Bruno[/name_m] [name_f]Hummingbird[/name_f] which I find so fascinating.
[name_f][/name_f]
@EagleEyes[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- oh yes, I love so many bird names in disguise like [name_m]Calum[/name_m], [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], and [name_f]Aderyn[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] So lovely.
[name_f][/name_f]
@FreyByTheWay[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Swan[/name_f] is so lovely! [name_f][/name_f] I also like the Nordic (maybe Icelandic? [name_f][/name_f] I can’t remember) Svana (and consequently also [name_f]Svala[/name_f], which I think is ridiculously charming). [name_f][/name_f] I do prefer [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] to [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], but I agree, [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is such a wonderful name!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]
hahaha well we had a very melodramatic game but we did win in the end! [name_f][/name_f] Maybe the Bears will surprise ya, I’ve heard a lot of hype around [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] [name_m]Williams[/name_m], your new coach, and some of the recent acquisitions they made!
[name_f][/name_f]
@Greyblue[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Swanna[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] Interesting, reminds me of Svana which I like so much.
[name_f][/name_f]
@baya44[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- TZUFIT!!! [name_f][/name_f] I have loved Tzufit for years but never found it very usable since I hear “two feet” too much
[name_f][/name_f]
@DropOfsunlight[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Starling[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] Lovebird and Rosefinch feel so sweet and romantic, too! [name_f][/name_f] And the adorable just [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is so lovely.
[name_f][/name_f]
@VEL[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Parastoo[/name_f] is fascinating! [name_f][/name_f] AND MEREL! [name_f][/name_f] I adore [name_f]Merel[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Love[/name_f] that you mentioned Tzufit too, she’s so ridiculously cool. [name_f][/name_f] I am curious how some of these, like [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Fenella[/name_f], and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], connect to birds? [name_f][/name_f] I trust you, I am just missing the connection hahaha.
[name_f][/name_f]
@GinnyPotter[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is so lovely! [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Kestrel[/name_m] is really fun too, artsy and boho.
[name_f][/name_f]
@Krikit[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- yes, I have been loving [name_f]Dove[/name_f] as a middle too! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is lovely; I didn’t realize it was a bird name? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f] might be my favorite bird name (if not her, then Lærke!), so I’m loving seeing her so much on everyone’s lists!
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] → princess transformed into a swan in [name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_m]Lake[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Fenella[/name_f] → from [name_f]Fionnuala[/name_f]. In [name_m]Irish[/name_m] legend, [name_f]Fionnuala[/name_f] was one of four children who were transformed into swans
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a Greek name meaning bright and is used for a couple of goddesses including [name_m]Artemis[/name_m] (which I love!), but it’s also a songbird! Not for the etymology or anything, but because of the way the bird’s call sounds.
