Italian-ish name for Baby #2

[name]Hi[/name] everyone! I live on Nameberry, but this is my first time posting

I am 21 weeks pregnant & just found out that we are having a baby boy! Our first is a boy as well - his name is [name]Matteo[/name], & he does not have a middle name (b/c my husband doesn’t have a middle name either). We are thrilled with his name since my husband is Italian & has a very Italian name as well. We call him [name]Teo[/name] for short, & he always has the option of using [name]Matt[/name] later in life if he prefers :-p

Anyway… now we are trying to decide on [name]Baby[/name] boy #2 & find a name that we love as much as [name]Matteo[/name]. & we would love input from all of you!

I am being very picky about the process & here are some of my rules (you are allowed to bend them though  )

  • no more than 3 syllables (which nixes a lot of Italian names)
  • Italian preferred but European flair is fine
  • goes with [name]Matteo[/name] as a sib-set, but does not end in “o” (which also nixes a lot of Italian names)

All of that considered, I am leaning towards [name]Julian[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]. It seems to meet a lot of my criteria & honors my brother & sister because brother’s name is [name]Daniel[/name] & sister’s middle name is [name]Jewel[/name] (a bit of a stretch but it’s there in [name]Julian[/name] - [name]Jewel[/name]-ian haha). I also like that there is a [name]Saint[/name] [name]Julian[/name]

But since neither my husband and I are completely sold on this name, I am looking for input! Either sell us on the perfection of [name]Julian[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] or give us some other ideas (which all of you are amazing at!!!)

Thanks in advance

I love [name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Lorenzo[/name]. [name]Julian[/name] is also very nice though.

Hmm, that’s a pickle!

not bending the rules:
[name]Luigi[/name]
[name]Ambrosi[/name]
[name]Michele[/name]
[name]Luca[/name]
[name]Gianni[/name]
[name]Cesare[/name]
Messina

[name]Vitale[/name]

Bending the O-rule:
[name]Genaro[/name]
[name]Lucio[/name]
[name]Umberto[/name]

Bending the syllable-rule:
Baldasarre
[name]Salvatore[/name]
[name]Raffaele[/name]

I think [name]Daniele[/name] is great, [name]Julian[/name] too, but if you don’t feel it I doubt I can talk you into it.

[name]Welcome[/name] to nameberry and thanks for asking us for advice.

I was surprised to see [name]Julian[/name] as your favourite as I was expecting a very Italian sounding name. I love [name]Julian[/name] I just don’t love it with [name]Matteo[/name] but I do think that [name]Jules[/name] would make a GREAT first name and would directly honour your sister too, besides [name]Jules[/name] sounds so buccaneer and handsome to me, it has lots of pizzazz and energy.

If we concentrate on getting a [name]Julian[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] combo that imo fits more I want to suggest [name]Jules[/name] [name]Dante[/name], for me that is a completely swoonworthy name!

All the best,

rollo

I like the suggestion of [name]Dante[/name] with [name]Matteo[/name].

And from my favorite names, which we’ve tried to go European with, I like:
[name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name]/[name]Tomas[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name]/[name]Bastian[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Andres[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Felix[/name]

[name]Julian[/name] is fine, but I don’t love it as a name. It sounds good with [name]Matteo[/name], though.
I hear you on not wanting another name that ends in -o. I think I’d have the same rule.

I love the idea of [name]Matteo[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name], they seem perfect together.

[name]Matteo[/name] & [name]Dante[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] & [name]Luca[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] & Gianluca
[name]Matteo[/name] & [name]Federico[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] & [name]Valentino[/name]
[name]Matteo[/name] & [name]Roman[/name]

I love [name]Julian[/name]. Use that! Done.

Other suggestions that come to mind:

[name]Christian[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Luca[/name]

My favorite italian name is [name]Giovanni[/name] or [name]Gio[/name] for short. It is simple, classic and so romantic. Congrats to you!!

I would totally go with [name]Lorenzo[/name]. I know it breaks the rules but it is gorgeous and awesome. If not [name]Lorenzo[/name] I like [name]Sebastian[/name] or [name]Dante[/name]. [name]Both[/name] very masculine to match [name]Matteo[/name].

thank you all so much for your suggestions! my husband is a big advocate for [name]Dante[/name] so he will be thrilled to hear those suggestions - I just can’t get past my association with [name]Dante[/name]'s Inferno :-p

[name]Matteo[/name] was almost [name]Giovanni[/name] ([name]Gio[/name]), but we knew too many kids with that name (who happened to be trouble makers haha)

[name]Lucian[/name] is another top runner for us. Husband likes [name]Luca[/name], but I don’t know how I feel about boy name ending in “a”. Other hang up is that my sister is dating a [name]Luke[/name] & don’t know if that would be weird… Although I probably shouldn’t cross out a forever name b/c of that :-p

I like [name]Roman[/name] a lot - husband doesn’t…

[name]Dominic[/name] is another front-runner. Unfortunate season to like the name though with [name]Dominic[/name] the Donkey playing on the radio all the time haha

I think we would use [name]Jules[/name] as nickname for [name]Julian[/name], but probably not as formal name  Middle name [name]Dante[/name] is a great suggestion though! Vague association with [name]Daniel[/name] for brother like [name]Julian[/name] is vague association to sister, & my husband gets to use one of his favorite names. It does add more flair & strength to [name]Julian[/name] too that I think we were missing

Again… thank you ALL sooo much! great stuff to think about & feel free to keep the suggestions coming!

[name]Lorenzo[/name] was one of my husband’s suggestions until Snooki went & named her baby that :-p Plus it breaks my “o” rule

Another husband suggestion (half-joking… but only half) that I am so glad none of you recommended - Fabrezio haha

I really like [name]Jules[/name]/[name]Julian[/name] [name]Dante[/name] for you  I’m also loving [name]Rafael[/name]/[name]Raphael[/name] with [name]Matteo[/name]. [name]Teo[/name] and [name]Rafa[/name] would be to die for!

Well I loved being able to suggest a name combo for your baby and it is super nice to know that you liked my suggestion.

I know a little boy named [name]Dante[/name] and it always sounds terrific, a very nice Italian style name that feels familiar with us Aussies, Brits and Americans.

(You will never think about [name]Dante[/name]'s Inferno once it is your baby’s name.)

rollo

And even if you or others do think of [name]Dante[/name]'s Inferno, what’s wrong with that? It’s a great piece of important literature!! This is one of the cases where I don’t think the association should be seen as problematic.

I love [name]Dante[/name]. It’s not really long, its not hard to say, it reads Italian but not really overpoweringly challenging to read/say and it goes nicely with [name]Matteo[/name].

[name]Luca[/name] is tired to me, I’m sorry. I know a lot of [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Lukes[/name] and Lucases. I also know [name]Luca[/name] on enough ex-Soviet Bloc Eastern Europeans it doesn’t even really give me an Italian vibe. It’s not un-Italian, but… meh.

I really love [name]Dominic[/name]. I actually was going to say [name]Dominic[/name] after I read the OP, I see it has been mentioned. I think it’s a good level of Italian-lite. And more interesting than [name]Luca[/name].

Kicking it a bit old-school, I am very fond of [name]Carmine[/name] and [name]Salvatore[/name]. They give me a Mid-C Sinatra type feel. I like vintage names as much as anybody on Nameberry (and that’s a lot!) I guess.

I like [name]Julian[/name]. Of the other suggestions, I also like [name]Luca[/name]. [name]Just[/name] curious, it looks like you are planning to give baby boy #2 a middle name - are you concerned that [name]Matteo[/name] will be jealous since he doesn’t have one?

Thanks again  all good stuff to mull over!

i don’t think [name]Matteo[/name] will be jealous since we did not give him a middle name since his dad doesn’t have one - so he “has” dad’s middle name in a sense :-p My husband’s mom said that she did not give him a middle name b/c his “first name was too beautiful to be tarnished by a middle name” haha - we could always use that excuse  Plus, i don’t know if boys harp on these things like us girls do
