It's a Baby Boy!

Daddy and I just found out our little bean is a baby boy! Since we’d been talking about names long before we found out we were pregnant, we’d already created a pretty solid list. Now, its down to three choices that each have a lot of significance for us. Can you help us out? Opinions and thoughts are much appreciated, and suggestions are welcome as well (although we’re pretty sure he’ll end up being one of these guys). Our last name is pronounced exactly like ‘Strong’, but spelled differently…so we want the first name to be easy to spell and recognize since his last name will be a pain!

[name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] Straung - [name]Leif[/name] is daddy’s father’s middle name, and grandpa’s initials are also ALS. We thought these were both cool ways to honor our baby’s grandaddy. We love [name]Axel[/name]'s meaning (“father of peace”) and just love the name in general.

Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung - [name]Everett[/name] honors daddy’s brother, and they are extremely close and have been huge parts of each other’s lives. Rigsby is my mother’s maiden name, and since she didn’t have any brothers, or sisters who kept their maiden names, this name could be lost from our family tree. I also just love the sound of the name and think it flow very nicely with [name]Everett[/name]. (not sure if Rigsby is easy enough to recognize and spell though…but we adore this name!)

[name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung - [name]Augustus[/name] is after grandaddy’s first name, and we love its flow with [name]Luther[/name]. [name]Luther[/name] is after [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Jr[/name]., but here’s where a small dilemma might come in…I’m white, daddy’s white, so, inevitably, baby is going to be white. [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Jr[/name]. has been my biggest inspiration in life and everything he said/taught means so much to me, and so I shouldn’t think that this will be an issue, but will people think its weird? I’m pretty sure I care too much about this name and its history to ignore these feelings, but just curious about your opinions. also, not sure if it will be too much of a problem because we will probably call him [name]Luke[/name] 80% of the time.

Sorry that this is ridiculously long, and thanks once again for any advice you can give! We’re hoping to settle on a name before he’s born!

Momma [name]Cat[/name]

Congratulations!

[name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] Straung: I think that [name]Leif[/name] is really cool and I like [name]Axel[/name]'s meaning, but at the same time, [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] sounds like [name]Axel[/name] Eif when I say it out loud, because the back-to-back Ls cancel each other out. I think that [name]Leif[/name] would sound great with a first name that doesn’t end in L. Oh! Also, because [name]Axel[/name] reminds me of Axle, the car part, [name]Axel[/name] Strong reminds me of a strong axle.

(About the ALS initials: When I saw the ALS initials, my honest first thought was that while it’s great to honor someone’s initials, ALS is also a horrible motor neuron diease; it’s full name is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, but it’s known as ALS or [name]Lou[/name] [name]Gehrig[/name]'s Disease. The disease connection may not be an issue for you, but I thought I’d mention it just in case.)

Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung: I think this is really handsome! I also really, really love [name]Everett[/name], and from your list I also love the sound of [name]Everett[/name] [name]Luther[/name] Straung. (I was going to suggest [name]Everett[/name] Rigsby Strong, but it’s kind of R heavy when I say it out loud…)

[name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung: I love [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]! (You have some great family names, by the way!) The Ss cancel each other out, but I think that [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] is too special to pass up!

I’ll vote for [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name], with Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] in a very close second. (If [name]Everett[/name] [name]Luther[/name] Straung were an option, I’d vote for that, too!)

Good luck!

I love [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name], and think [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung is a stellar name. I also do appreciate the significance of using Rigsby to keep the name in the family tree, but overall, the name finishes a distant second to [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]. [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] is not really my style, though I can appreciate the meaning it holds for you.

THIS [name]MAY[/name] BE STUPID, BUT [name]HOW[/name] [name]DO[/name] YOU PRONOUNCE [name]LEIF[/name]? IS IT “[name]LEAF[/name]” OR “LIFE”? NOT REALLY A BIG [name]DEAL[/name]. [name]AXEL[/name] IS CUTE, A NICE ALTERNATIVE TO [name]ALEX[/name], BUT IT REMINDS ME 1) OF [name]CHARLIE[/name] [name]AXEL[/name] WOODS, [name]SON[/name] OF [name]TIGER[/name] WOODS, AND 2) OF AXELS, AS IN CAR PARTS. IT HAS A GREAT MEANING, THOUGH. I AGREE WITH [name]JILL[/name] ABOUT THE ALS INITIALS AND THE CORRESPONDING DISEASE - IT IS A BIT ODD, BUT OBVIOUSLY A RELATIVE SURVIVED IT, SO [name]BABY[/name] CAN, TOO!

I SEE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS NAME, AND IT DOES HAVE GOOD FLOW, BUT RIGSBY SEEMS LIKE TOO MUCH OF A SURNAME TO BE A WORKABLE FIRST NAME. I THINK IT WOULD MAKE A STUNNING [name]PET[/name] NAME, BUT NOT FOR A CHILD…

I WOULDN’T WORRY ABOUT BEING WHITE WITH THIS ONE. MLK, [name]JR[/name] WAS A [name]HERO[/name] FOR ALL OF US, NOT [name]JUST[/name] [name]AFRICAN[/name]-AMERICANS, AND YOU CAN DEFINITELY [name]HONOR[/name] HIM WITH YOUR [name]SON[/name]'S NAME! A QUESTION - [name]HOW[/name] ARE YOU GETTING [name]LUKE[/name] FROM THIS? THIS IS MY [name]FAVORITE[/name] NAME OF YOUR LIST, AND I THINK YOU SHOULD PICK IT! GOOD [name]LUCK[/name]!

Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung I love this name!! Very stronge and rugged name…

The meanings behind all your name choices are wonderful, so my preferences below are based on my opinion of the names themselves.

2nd Place: [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] Straung - This would be a great choice. I particularly like [name]Leif[/name].

3rd Place: Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung - The flow of this is very nice, and I love the idea of perpetuating the family surname Rigsby. However, I think Rigsby is better as a middle name than first name.

1st Place: [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung - My father and grandfather are named [name]Luther[/name] (after Reformation leader [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name]). My brother is [name]Luther[/name] “[name]Paul[/name].” My maternal grandfather’s name was [name]August[/name]. So this name really sounds cool to me. I especially [name]LOVE[/name] the middle name [name]Augustus[/name], which I would love in the first name position too. In fact, I would suggest [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Luther[/name] Straung.

ooh toughy!
I think I’m going to vote for Rigsby [name]Everett[/name]!

oh i can’t even begin to explain how much i love the name Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung!!! definitely my vote =)

aww i love all of them! but i’d half to go with Rigsby [name]Everett[/name]
I would like to name a child after my gma’s last name to, it’s not around anymore…

I love Rigsby [name]Everett[/name]. It’s unique without being weird and is great way to honour your mother.

I do also love [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name]. I wouldn’t worry to much about the L’s canceling each other out, just because after a certain point his middle name won’t actually be said that often. [name]Axel[/name] is really one of my favourite names.

I don’t think you can go wrong either way; you have picked some lovely, strong, handsome names! Good luck!

Thanks so much for your opinions!

I can imagine using any of these names the millions of times that you say your kid’s name during his life - I wish I was expecting triplets so I could use all three of my names! (although, triplets might be a little more than I can handle right now…but they would be beautifully named!)

jill - thanks for your comments! thanks for pointing out lou gehrig’s disease. [name]Baby[/name]'s granddaddy did mention this before, but he said that the only time anyone ever mentioned it to him was during conversations specifically about initials (these have come up a few times for me as well during my life). but, this doesn’t mean other people weren’t noticing it and just not saying anything…I will definitely take this into consideration…I just [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Leif[/name]! Haha, my family tree is packed with gems! Everyone on [name]Baby[/name]-Daddy’s side of the family is so exquisitely named, I feel like I have to keep up! While I like the sound of [name]Everett[/name] [name]Luther[/name], I’m not sure if I want to call my baby [name]Everett[/name]…daddy’s brother lives close to us and we will see him all the time, and I’m not really a fan of two family members with the same name (hence, no Daddy [name]Jr[/name].).

dizzy, babyberry, alleyezonme2017, rosyposey, jacjac, justpeachy - thanks for your thoughts! daddy and I appreciate your votes so much, and all the wonderful compliments about our names.

lemon - We’re pronouncing [name]Leif[/name]: “LAYF”. and with Rigsby, one of my main concerns is that it is too associated with the last name (i mean, that’s where we got it!). But, one of the names previously on my list that Rigsby replaced was [name]Riley[/name], and I feel like they have a very similar feel to them, with Rigsby being more unique (as a first name) and more meaningful. I was thinking though - if [name]Riley[/name] (originally a surname, I believe) could make it as first name, maybe Rigsby could too? I can picture myself saying Rigsby a thousand times to my baby boy…but that’s still a concern. [name]Luke[/name] from [name]Luther[/name]…well, they both have the “LOO” sound at the front, which is where we directly got it. But, we want to use it because both daddy and I love the name [name]Luke[/name]. We also love the name [name]Luther[/name], pretty equally. [name]Luther[/name] has more meaning for us, so we were thinking of using [name]Luther[/name] as a first name and then [name]Luke[/name] as a nickname where [name]Luther[/name] is used at school, on forms, etc. and [name]Luke[/name] is used at home or even at school with friends/some teachers/coaches. I find [name]Luther[/name] a little…old…for a baby, but to me, [name]Luke[/name] is short and simple and wonderful for a baby/child, and [name]Luther[/name] is handsome and strong for a teen/adult. I like having two options.

everwaiteing - awesome connections with [name]Luther[/name]/[name]August[/name]! Its almost like we’re (if we choose [name]Luther[/name]) naming our baby after [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] (historic religious figure) because I believe that’s who [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Jr[/name] was named after! Thanks so much for your opinions & thoughts!

A huge thank you to everyone, and, again, sorry for the length of this post.

Momma [name]Cat[/name]

They’re really all great names, MommaC. The ALS thing isn’t that big of a deal, but if it were something that bothered you, I thought it could help narrow down your list. (Also, when he gets things monogrammed, it will be ASL instead of ALS, and if I were to see [name]Axel[/name] L. Streung written out, I wouldn’t notice the ALS, either. I knew someone who had the disease, so it was just hard for me to miss…)

You could always wait until he’s born to see which name best fits him…

I’ve never met a Rigsby, and think it’s great! (And I still love [name]Luther[/name], too…)

(Out of curiosity, and if you’re comfortable sharing, what were some of your favorite names for a baby girl?)

Take care!

[name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] Straung - There’s something about this name that just doesn’t flow for me. It also looks like it’s trying to hard to be cool.

Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] Straung - VERY awesome name. Sounds unique, but looks handsome and classy!

[name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung - This one is my favourite! I think it looks good and sounds great together. Also I think spelling wise it’ll be the easiest to spell.

CONGRATULATIONS and best of luck!!!

[name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] Straung is just fabulous! Everything about this name is wonderful, and the meaning it has to you only adds to that. And, considering that you wanted something familiar, that is easy to spell and pronounce, there is no competition - [name]Axel[/name] and Rigsby simply don’t pass that test (though they are also very cool names).

Wow I think all of these names are beautiful!
Whatever you pick will be wonderful!

For what it’s worth, my vote goes to [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]! [name]Love[/name] love love!

If you plan on having more children in the future, you can always hold the other names in reserve for them too!

Well done, and good luck!

It seems like Rigsby and [name]Luther[/name] are the “fan” favorites! Thanks for all your opinions - they are truly a huge help!

While I still love [name]Axel[/name], after talking it over with daddy, we decided to remove [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] from our list. With the ALS initials and (for me) it sounds a little short, I’m thinking of revisiting it if another boy were to come along, but giving it up for now. So, I guess its just between Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]…

And, to jill, I have no problem sharing our girl choices! My mother’s name is [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Rose[/name], so we have (heads up - this might be long, just like the boys):

[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] Straung - I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Daisy[/name]. Daddy loves it as well, but wanted to keep our others in mind. But, neither of us were sure it was a name she could grow in to well, so we decided on [name]Margaret[/name] for a more formal name or a fallback name if she hated [name]Daisy[/name]. (gerber daisies are my all time favorite flowers!). [name]Abigail[/name] is, life I said, after my mother.

[name]Teagan[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] Straung - Daddy loves [name]Teagan[/name]! I like it as well, and could imagine myself calling my daughter that, but I’m not sure how it sounds with [name]Abigail[/name].

[name]Keira[/name] Bellarose Straung / [name]Keira[/name] [name]Rosabelle[/name] Straung - We like both of these variations and both really like [name]Keira[/name]. I think [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Keira[/name], and [name]Teagan[/name] would be adorable sisters!

[name]Harper[/name] Rosebella Straung - Daddy loves [name]Harper[/name] as well, but [name]Keira[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] are a bit difficult to say together, and choosing this would have taken [name]Keira[/name] (first name only) out of the running. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Daisy[/name] & [name]Harper[/name] though.

We were leaning towards [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name], but everything will be re-opened for debate if there’s a little girl in our future! If you don’t mind, which do you think would sound best with either Rigsby or [name]Luther[/name]/[name]Luke[/name]? (obviously, [name]Harper[/name] will probably have to be out if we choose [name]Luther[/name])

Momma [name]Cat[/name]

Rigsby [name]Everett[/name]

I don’t care for Rigsby as a first name, but think it would make a meaningful middle name for a son of yours. For me, Rigsby sounds a bit pretentious as a first name, and I also don’t care for the inevitable “[name]Rigs[/name]” his pals would shorten it to.

On the other hand, I think [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] is spectacular! And how special to be named after both his grandpa and [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name].

I also think [name]Luther[/name] “[name]Luke[/name]” and [name]Margaret[/name] “[name]Daisy[/name]” would be a much better sibling pairing than Rigsby and [name]Daisy[/name].

Best wishes!

If I did not know your favorite girl’s names, I probably would vote for [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]. But, I can only really see [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] with [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] and maybe [name]Keira[/name].

However, Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] was a VERY close second for me and I think it works better with your favorite girl names. So, my vote would go to Rigsby [name]Everett[/name].

On a side note, [name]Teagan[/name] seems a little off from the rest of your names. It just doesn’t seem to fit with any of the girl or boy names to me, so I did not take it into consideration when “casting my vote” between [name]Luther[/name] and Rigsby. And I am glad that you eliminated [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name]. It seemed way to masculine to me with a surname that is pronounced “Strong.” Also, I think that ultra masculine names should be balanced with very feminine names and it doesn’t seem to me that you are drawn to the ultra feminine names (especially with two of your girl’s names being unisex). Although [name]Margaret[/name], nn [name]Daisy[/name] and [name]Keira[/name] are definitelty feminine just not as feminine as [name]Axel[/name] [name]Leif[/name] is masculine. So, I think that that choice could have potentially caused problems with sibling names in the future.

I really do like both Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name], so either one would be a great choice. Also, I adore [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name], nn [name]Daisy[/name] and think it would be a lovely choice in the future.

[name]Hi[/name] Momma…I was on the phone a few minutes ago, and shared your name list with a friend. Between Rigsby [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name], my friend and her husband both voted for Rigsby [name]Everett[/name], but when I mentioned that [name]Luther[/name] would be called [name]Luke[/name], they both changed their votes to [name]Luther[/name] “[name]Luke[/name]” [name]Augustus[/name].

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] Straung so much, and think that [name]Daisy[/name] is fantastic! I think that [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] is perfect with [name]Luther[/name] [name]Augustus[/name]! I love daisies, too, and have been ever since I planted yellow daisies one summer.

I can see [name]Teagan[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] with Rigsby (especially [name]Harper[/name]), but really can’t see [name]Keira[/name] with either. Hmm…I can better see [name]Keira[/name] with Rigsby than I can with [name]Luther[/name], I guess.

(With [name]Teagan[/name], I agree that [name]Abigail[/name] isn’t the best in the middle beause of the G sounds, but I think a [name]Rose[/name] name would be really pretty, like [name]Rosabelle[/name], Bellarose, [name]Rosaline[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name]…I love [name]Rose[/name] names! [name]Rose[/name] is one of my favorite first names, and you’re so lucky it’s a family name for you!)

So, from your list, I’ll vote for [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] with [name]Luther[/name], and [name]Harper[/name] with Rigsby. ([name]Margaret[/name] is my favorite from your list…I’m not sure if it would ever be an option for you, but I can see [name]Luther[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], and a [name]Rose[/name] name (first name) as siblings.)

Good luck!
