It's a boy, it's a boy!

We finally found out the gender of our baby today…we’re having a BOY! This is such exciting news for us and of course the first thing I wanted to do was revisit my boy names list. So here I am!

We have a daughter and her name is [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]. We chose her name because:

  1. It’s uncommon. It’s not in the top 100 in Australia, where we live. However, it’s not so unusual that it’s unheard of.
  2. It’s vintage. We like names that fit the “100 year rule”. We also like names that are traditionally spelled.
  3. It has great nicknames. DD gets [name_f]Addie[/name_f] or [name_u]Del[/name_u].
  4. It’s easy to spell and pronounce.

We are hoping to find a boy’s name that fits this same criteria. Uncommon, vintage, great nicknames and is easy to spell/pronounce. I also want to avoid names that start with an ‘A’ if possible (although my list does contain an ‘A’ name, so I guess I can be swayed).

Our list so far is:
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_u]Campbell[/name_u]
[name_m]Eamon[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]

Does anyone have any more suggestions for us? Pleeeeeeeease?

My personal favourite at this early stage is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. DH’s is [name_m]Eamon[/name_m]. We both really like [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] as well.

I stumbled across [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] on Nameberry and was given lots of helpful feedback from all you Berries. This advice really helped us make a decision. I’m hoping you can help us find the perfect name for our little man, too  xx

I like your style! [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would be great with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f].
Another ideas (including possible nicknames and listing as little A names as possible):
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]/[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]/[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] “[name_m]Fred[/name_m]”
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] “Vinc”
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]/[name_m]Callum[/name_m]/[name_m]Caleb[/name_m] “[name_u]Cal[/name_u]”
[name_m]Albert[/name_m] “[name_m]Al[/name_m]”
[name_u]Lionel[/name_u]/[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] “[name_m]Leo[/name_m]”
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] “[name_u]Perry[/name_u]”/"[name_u]Jaz[/name_u]"
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] “[name_m]Ben[/name_m]”
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u] “[name_u]Val[/name_u]”
[name_m]Roderick[/name_m] “[name_m]Rick[/name_m]”
[name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
[name_m]Harold[/name_m] “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]”/"[name_m]Huck[/name_m]"
[name_m]Jerome[/name_m]/[name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m]/[name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] “[name_u]Jem[/name_u]”
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] “[name_m]Sol[/name_m]”
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] “[name_u]Con[/name_u]”/"[name_m]Curt[/name_m]"
[name_m]Trevor[/name_m]/[name_m]Travis[/name_m]
[name_m]Damon[/name_m]
[name_m]Archer[/name_m]/[name_m]Archibald[/name_m] “[name_m]Archie[/name_m]”
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m]/[name_m]Ramon[/name_m] “[name_u]Rae[/name_u]”
And maybe [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] from my signature.

From your list I like:
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]

I don’t mind [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], not my taste, but it is kind of cute.

Suggestions:
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] – NN: [name_m]Benji[/name_m], [name_m]Ben[/name_m], [name_m]Benny[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] – NN: [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_u]Sammy[/name_u]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] – NN: Ezie
[name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] – NN: [name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Weston[/name_m] – NN: [name_m]Wes[/name_m]
[name_m]Duncan[/name_m]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m]
[name_m]Gregory[/name_m] – NN: [name_m]Greg[/name_m]
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] – NN: [name_m]Ross[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] – NN: [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_m]Bernard[/name_m] – NN: [name_u]Bernie[/name_u]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - NN: [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_m]Xander[/name_m]

I like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m].

Good list! My particular favorites are [name_m]Eamon[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], and I second the suggestion of [name_m]Harold[/name_m] ([name_m]Hal[/name_m], [name_m]Harry[/name_m]). Other ideas: [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]/[name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] ([name_m]Len[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m]), [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] ([name_u]Toby[/name_u]), [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] ([name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_m]Rick[/name_m], [name_u]Rickie[/name_u]). Congratulations!

[name_m]Eamon[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] are my favourites from your list. I love the nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] will forever remind me of the sandwich.

Other vintage, traditional names that I love include:

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Laurie[/name_u])
[name_m]Leon[/name_m]
[name_m]Stuart[/name_m]

If you’d be willing to do another A, I love [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Alistair[/name_m].

Thanks for the compliment, handsallover!

Your suggestions are great. I really like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but a good friend of ours has a little boy with this name.

[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] is also great, but has already been used within our family.

[name_m]Archie[/name_m] used to be at the top of my boy’s list a few years ago, but I now have two close girlfriends with baby Archies, so that’s out of the question unfortunately.

Thank you, riverlyric. More great ideas!

I’ve learned through Nameberry that [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a kind of sandwich. I had no idea! So, I can understand some people’s hesitation with the name. I’ve never ordered a reuben sandwich, they don’t seem to be something we have here in Australia.

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] is another old favourite of mine. However, I’ve come across this name quite over recent years. Being a teacher makes picking baby names that much more difficult :frowning: It’s not that these Samuels were naughty boys, it’s just that I’m hoping to find something fresh and new that I haven’t seen too often. [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] is perfect in that regard. I personally had never met a baby/toddler/child with this name, so I’m hoping to stumble across another little gem like this again

[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is lovely, but I would probably prefer it as a middle name.

Thanks again!

I like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Eamon[/name_m] & [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] the most!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about:

[name_m]Eames[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]Edison[/name_m]
[name_u]Willoughby[/name_u]
[name_m]Langston[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
[name_m]Calloway[/name_m]
[name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]

Thanks, boyandgirl.

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is definitely my number one. There are only a couple of minor problems with the name for us. Firstly, DH LOVES the name [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but is lukewarm on [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I personally love names that have a more mature, formal feel for when the child grows into an adult. Therefore, I’m not willing to compromise on choosing [name_u]Theo[/name_u] rather than [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. Perhaps I just need to work on DH a little bit more  The other minor problem I’m having is that I’ve come across two mothers with baby Theodores this past year. One is a friend of a friend - no big deal. The other is a mum in my mother’s group. Soooo, I worry that [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is an up-and-comer. I could be wrong, though. I don’t really think the name will ever be in the top 50. It didn’t even enter the top 100 in 2014. Perhaps I’m just overthinking it! Maybe I need to let go of the idea that our baby names will stay original and fresh. I’m sure a lot of parents have picked names in the past, thinking they are unique, only to find that they shoot up the popularity ranks in years to come.

[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a name that needs to grow a little bit more on me, but I like it enough to keep it on the list. The nickname [name_m]Wes[/name_m] is sensational.

Thanks, nathalia. I think our list is pretty great, too

[name_m]Eamon[/name_m] is DH’s favourite. He likes the sound of it and the fact it’s quite unusual. I have two hesitations with the name. I don’t like the nickname options - “Eam” and “Eams” don’t really float my boat. I think of the name [name_f]Amy[/name_f] when I hear them. I’m super into nicknames and know that baby will inevitably get one, so I really want to love them. The other thing I’m unsure of is the difficulty with spelling. Personally, I already knew how to spell it with the silent ‘E’. But I know we will get others who are unsure of how to spell [name_m]Eamon[/name_m]. Our surname is quite tricky to spell/pronounce, so I’d prefer something that’s more phonetically straightforward.

I used to absolutely love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] (probably more [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] than [name_m]Harold[/name_m], though.) But, as I mentioned in an earlier post, being a teacher has meant that I’ve come across a number of [name_m]Harrys[/name_m] in recent years. So unfortunately, he has disappeared off my list.

[name_m]Louis[/name_m] is so beautiful. However, my cousin just named her baby boy [name_m]Louis[/name_m].

[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] is one I hadn’t considered. I love the NN [name_u]Toby[/name_u]. I think I need to consider this name a bit more. I’ll add it to the collection

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], toronto87. Thanks for taking the time to give me some suggestions.

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is a short, strong sounding name. I like it. I’m not sure however about nicknames. Would he get “[name_f]El[/name_f]?”

[name_m]Leon[/name_m] is fantastic. But, DH’s name is [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. I know some people love a namesake, but it’s not really our thing.

Cheers

[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is a name that came to mind to suggest. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the nn Ru? I figured since you like [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] it might be a contender?

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] are great. I think [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] fits the bill for you best!

What about [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]? The first thing my SO said when I suggested was, that sounds old fashioned, so it might be up your street. It’s in the 800s in the UK so definitely not too trendy.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there, oliveshoot. I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] could be a contender for sure, seeing as he comes with the cute NN “Ru”. I’ll see what DH says about it when he gets home from work. Thank you.

Thanks, dewdropsandroses. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a great name. The more I say it, the more I like it!

Funny story about [name_m]Elijah[/name_m]…I used to have it on my list, then removed it when DH said he didn’t like it. Then last night, he asks me, “What do you think of [name_m]Elijah[/name_m]?” Aaaahhhh, men!

Hmmm, [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]…it’s a pretty great name. I’m not sure if I like it more than [name_m]Edward[/name_m], though? I definitely wouldn’t pick [name_m]Edward[/name_m] however, based on how popular he is. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] looks fantastic when written, but I’m not sure if I love the sound of [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] as much as [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. I’ll check and see what DH says. The nickname “[name_m]Eddy[/name_m]” is a winner, though!
