how would you pronounce this name if you came across it ?
So I’ve been pronouncing this name the way the band Bon Iver does = “ee-vair” for years. But I saw some people on NB pronouncing the name “eye-ver”. I actually find myself really loving the eye-ver pronunciation as a name!
Opinions & thoughts? Thoughts from other Bon Iver fans are super appreciated too!
I’ve only ever heard eye-ver (or eye-vuh, to be more accurate to my accent) for the name. To my knowledge the band is “ee-vaire” because of the [name_u]French[/name_u] phrase “bon hiver” rather than it being “correct” for the actual name [name_m]Iver[/name_m].
The similar [name_m]Ivar[/name_m] and [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] are eye-var and eye-vo in [name_f]English[/name_f], and more like ee-var and ee-vo in most other European languages (as far as I’m aware).
EYE-ver is my first instinct, but I’d probably second-guess it. I like it! I’m a fan of Bon [name_m]Iver[/name_m], but I didn’t think about the connection until you mentioned it.
I’ve always pronounced it as eye-ver, like [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] without the ee sound on the end so I’ve always assumed that’s how most USA-er’s pronounced it.
I have never heard of [name_m]Iver[/name_m] but I have heard of [name_m]Ivor[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother’s cousin was married to an [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] pronounced I (eye) vor.
