Ivory - is it sophisticated and pretty or silly and trashy?

I just had a dream last night that I had a little girl named [name]Ivory[/name]. We have three kids right now and are expecting #4 (unsure of gender yet). We’re all very fair with blonde hair, pale skin, blue eyes so the name suited her in the dream (assuming she’ll look like the rest of our kids… lol)

I woke up thinking that was such a pretty name (I’ve never heard of it as a name before), but I’ve been going back and fourth about it since then. I like [name]Ivy[/name] (though it’s not particularly meaningful to us) and I thought it was similar, but I wonder if people will just think of the soap or if it’ll be too weird/silly… I did a search and there seems to be mixed reviews… some say it sounds refined and sophisticated… even aristocratic… others think it sounds trashy! What are your thoughts?
[name]Sib[/name] names are [name]Eliana[/name], [name]Timothy[/name] & Aaralyn.

My first thought is of the old [name]Paul[/name] McArtney/ [name]Michael[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] song “[name]Ebony[/name] and [name]Ivory[/name].” I think it’s an unexpected name. Not as feminine sounding as your other daughters, but it could work.

I think [name]Ivory[/name] is sophisticated and pretty, although I prefer [name]Ivy[/name]. If [name]Ivory[/name] has more meaning to you, use it.

I was considering the idea of using [name]Ivy[/name] as a NN for [name]Ivory[/name]… maybe?

It doesn’t resonate for me personally, but what a cool story it’d be to tell her when she’s older and asks how she got her name!

Honestly, I find it rather downmarket. It’s got a racial undertone to it, at least here, and I think that’s something I’d shy away from in a first name.

I like [name]Ivory[/name], but I prefer [name]Ivy[/name] too.

My first thoughts were the racial undertones. Next it made me think of dead elephants and dead rhinoceroses. It makes me think of all the poor animals who died because people are greedy.

Yeah, I think of bloody elephant tusks.

Yeah… okay, I think [name]Ivory[/name] is probably a little too controversial to be used… i was thinking more of the color but I don’t want the association with dead elephants… Scratch! Moving on…

Sorry! :frowning:
I just read this horrible article about how the ivory trade is being revived in [name]China[/name] and it’s a big problem for elephants…

What does racial undertone mean? Edit: I don’t mean that rudely, I’m just not sure what racial undertones means when it comes to this name.

Maybe Neuilly is leary of a name that celebrates “whiteness?” I personally love [name]Bianca[/name], [name]Rosalba[/name], [name]Blanche[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name], [name]Olwen[/name]… but I suppose [name]Ivory[/name] is just more literal. I wouldn’t assume that the parent of an [name]Ivory[/name] was some kind of white-supremacist, but I might not want to use the name because I don’t understand the romantic associations with carved elephant tusk.

I’m not leary of something that “celebrates” whiteness, and I have no issues with the other names on your list. [name]Ivory[/name] has been and still is used to refer to Caucasians. So for me this is not just a reference to a color, it’s like naming your daughter “white girl”. At least with the way I grew up and have heard it used. I wouldn’t assume anything about you, but I would also just not use it. Sort of like the song “[name]Ebony[/name] & [name]Ivory[/name]” which takes about piano keys but is really supposed to be a message for interracial harmony. It’s a term that’s sometimes used for Caucasians.

lol so there you go… whether people think of the association to the color or to the literal ivory of elephant tusks, the kid would be screwed! I’ll scratch it and blame the dream rather than my own poor judgement.

Thanks for explaining this, I understand what you mean.

Actually, [name]Ivory[/name] is also an African American name honoring the [name]Ivory[/name] Coast. But either way, it does have racial meaning.

I think of what a pretty sound [name]Ivory[/name] has every time I take a shower with [name]Ivory[/name] soap! [name]Shame[/name] it has so many connotations.

I picture an elephant.

The sound is very beautiful, but the background is too hazy for me. Maybe as a middle!

I actually prefer [name]Ivory[/name] over [name]Ivy[/name] since it’s becoming quite popular.
