With all of your help and a LOT of talking between my husband and I we decided on [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] for our daughter. It was our first choice from the beginning but one [name]Beyonce[/name] named her baby [name]Blue[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] it really made me question whether of not I could get over the media attention the name [name]Ivy[/name] was getting. At first we thought it was too much but the name seems to not be talked about anymore and we thought that we would use it anyway. This morning I found out that the new NBC show “Smash” that has been hyped for months has a main character named [name]Ivy[/name]. Now this name is going to be getting attention on a weekly basis for who knows how many years! I am devastated! I have completely fallen in love with the name and even my husband has started to refer to her as [name]Ivy[/name]. It is the only name I have felt this way about. But if I was worried about it becoming popular because of [name]Beyonce[/name] then I really have to worry about it now that it is on an NBC tv show.
I am just so frustrated and now I really have to think about whether the name is still usable for me. When my son was first born a NICU nurse came up to me and asked if we named him after the Soap opera actor. I had no idea there was someone “famous” with that name. It didn’t come up when I googled because while it sounds the same the last name is spelled differently. I hated the feeling I got when she asked me that but he was already named and the actor in question played a minor roll and was not well known. Now, between [name]Beyonce[/name] and this new show, I fear that I will have that feeling a lot more often if we chose to go ahead with naming our baby [name]Ivy[/name]. The problem is that I don’t think of her as anything other than [name]Ivy[/name]. We only have 10 weeks left to find another name we love as much as [name]Ivy[/name]. I just don’t know what to do!!!
I would still use [name]Ivy[/name]. It’s a beautiful name and the [name]Beyonce[/name] stuff will soon blow over. It’s impossible to find a name that is not connected to a celebrity or a tv show in some way. [name]Just[/name] wait until the next celebrity baby is born and everyone will be talking about something else.
Yes, I would still use it. I don’t think it will be a problem for such a minor role.
I’m 24 and maybe twice in my life have I been compared to the movie [name]Carrie[/name], [name]Jim[/name] [name]Carrey[/name], or the [name]King[/name] of Queens [name]Kari[/name] or anything like that. I think people who want to find a connection will.
[name]Ivy[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] is a great mix of spunk and classic so I would advise you to go for it! It’s a name you both love and that’s the main thing in the end.
It sure sounds like [name]Ivy[/name] is “the name” for you, and that you might regret not naming her that more than naming her a name in pop culture. I think I’d go for it. In fact, I kinda did when we named our daughter [name]Fiona[/name]. We just knew it was the name, despite Shrek and [name]Burn[/name] Notice, and haven’t regretted using our favorite name one bit. For the record, your [name]Ivy[/name] combo is much prettier than [name]Beyonce[/name]'s and hoping for you that Smash is a terrible show that only lasts one season.
It’s a beautiful name. You should use it. My given name is [name]Melanie[/name], but I have always gone by [name]Mindy[/name]. I have been asked “Where’s Mork?” once a year or so for decades, but that’s it. At one point I did have a Mork & [name]Mindy[/name] lunch box because that was the only thing anyone could find with my name on it It never bothered me. And now it’s been so long, there are lots of people who have no idea what Mork & [name]Mindy[/name] is!
I agree with the others about [name]Ivy[/name]! She’s so stunning and I adore your full combo. I’ve seen some of your comments about your new concerns about [name]Ivy[/name] but I’ve hoped you’d come back to it in the end–it seems like there couldn’t be anything more perfect for you. I can understand that the pop culture associations might be off-putting (and I think I would feel the same way if someone asked me, “Oh, like this actor in this show” or whatever!), but you obviously love it so much and I think you would regret not using it in the end, as the pp said.
[name]How[/name] many celebrity kids can you name that were born 5 years ago? Not many with out looking them up I bet. The only celebrity kids names I can remember are [name]Shiloh[/name] and [name]Suri[/name]. I don’t think it will be a problem. As for Smash… I wouldn’t really worry about that either. I haven’t heard of it. And it usually takes a show at least 3 seasons before the character names start to grab peoples attention. At least that’s kind of the norm I’ve noticed.
Thank you all! I guess I needed a little kick in the pants. I have been thinking about this all day and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter. I love the name and ultimately I think I would always regret it if I didn’t use it. I made it a point to call her [name]Ivy[/name] every time I talked to/about her today and I didn’t feel anything different than I did yesterday. We really should not have to deal with such decisions when our pregnancy hormones are raging!!! So, thank you all for being there and giving me the reality check I needed!
