I see [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] on a boy, objectively. There are a lot of girls named it, though.
I agree with @OctaviaMay that this is a great nickname, with a backup full name.
If you don’t love the any of the full name suggestions, you could get creative:
- Use IV initials:
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] [name_u]Vaughn[/name_u] / [name_u]Valor[/name_u]
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Vance[/name_m] / [name_u]Valen[/name_u]
- Use a name that means, sort of means, or includes four/for (IV in [name_m]Roman[/name_m] numerals):
[name_m]Quade[/name_m] (includes “quad,” which means four)
[name_m]Fortunato[/name_m]
[name_m]Balfour[/name_m]
[name_m]Forbes[/name_m]
[name_m]Ford[/name_m] (there are a ton of names that include “ford”)
[name_u]Forest[/name_u]
I vote nay. People will always assume he is a girl before meeting him. Ives would be a great alternative with the same vibe.
I had [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] on my girl name list (I have all boys) as a way to honor a great grandfather named [name_m]Ivan[/name_m].
I would go with [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Iverson[/name_m], or [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] with the nickname [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. He could go by this nickname just with family if that’s what’s preferred. (Ie, it feels to feminine to use at school, etc)
I have a [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] who has the nickname [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] with family and friends, even though it’s more of a feminine name…it’s just a fun play on his name (making a short name into a longer “nickname”) that really fits him! And I definitely think [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] could fit a boy, but it seems like a nickname for a more masculine name.
Unfortunately, I have to say nay because it’s traditionally a female name and giving a child a name traditionally associated with the opposite gender can lead to being teased as a child, not being taken seriously as an adult, and a lifetime of confusion.
I say nay. I’d go [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Iverson[/name_m], etc and you can use nickname [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
I’m totally for it. Is it common enough to be confused regularly for girls? I can’t say, but going on sound and vibe alone, I might actually prefer it on a boy. For me it’s not a flower, but rather an occasionally ominous vine, with a sharper sound and feel. More cool than pretty.
