So I’ve recently come across the name [name_u]Jai[/name_u]. I’m not the biggest fan but it’s okay. I much prefer [name_u]Jay[/name_u]. However, I’m a bit stumped on how this is pronouced. I’ve ways thought it was pronouced Jye, but people on a different site have said its pronouced [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and Nameberry says its a version of [name_u]Jay[/name_u].
When you see [name_u]Jai[/name_u], do you pronounce it [name_u]Jay[/name_u] or Jye? Personally, I think that if you wanna use [name_u]Jay[/name_u]. Use [name_u]JAY[/name_u] not [name_u]Jae[/name_u] or [name_u]Jai[/name_u]. It’s such a handsome name and it shouldn’t be played with, imo. Sorry for ranting.
I actually liked the name Jai when I thought it was prn Jye then I realized it’s supposed to be pronounced as Jay. Which lost its appeal to me. I agree with you, if you want it prn Jay, then just go with Jay.
Edit: glad to know it’s prn Jye! That makes more sense. When I searched it a while ago people on other forums said it’s prn as Jay.
I would say it as [name_u]Jay[/name_u]. But [name_u]Kai[/name_u] would be [name_m]Ky[/name_m] to me, so I can see why that’s confusing! I think just because [name_u]Jay[/name_u] is more commonly heard, and I’ve never heard of a Jye. This is why I’m not a fan of creative spellings, ever, haha.
The only person I’ve ever seen with the name is the actor [name_u]Jai[/name_u] [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], who pronounces it Jye. Before I ever heard the name spoken that was how I assumed it was pronounced because it’s like [name_u]Kai[/name_u] with a J.
It’s quite common in Australia. I know a few people called [name_u]Jai[/name_u], all pronounced JYE. I also know 4 Jays/Jayes (all pronounced [name_u]JAY[/name_u]).
I was under the impression Jai comes from Sanskrit, but I have no proof for that.
I would pronounce it ‘Jye’ as well, like [name_u]Kai[/name_u]. I also have a friend with the last name Lai (Lye), so I definitely think ‘eye’ from an -ai ending.
Absolutely Jye. It’s pretty common in Australia, and no one I’ve met pronounces it like [name_u]Jay[/name_u]. It may be a variant of [name_u]Jay[/name_u], but that doesn’t mean it’s pronounced the same - just as [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_f]Marie[/name_f] are pronounced differently!
[name_f]My[/name_f] son is [name_u]Jai[/name_u] and he’s pronounced Jye. Like [name_u]Chai[/name_u], Thailand etc. it’s an Sanskrit name and they pronounce it [name_u]Jai[/name_u] like [name_u]Chai[/name_u]. But it also works with the Greek (and I believe Latin) language where ai is always pronounced as I.
