Japanese name from a movie

Was watching The [name_m]Wolverine[/name_m] with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] Jackman , and a female character in the movie name is Mariko
When they say it it almost sounds like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] …
It’s just so pretty and I checked on here and its not listed…

Any ideas about it, what do you think ??

" mayh- rey- coh"

" mah- rey- coh"

I’m pretty sure -ko just means “child” or “little” or something in Japanese, so it would be the name [name_f]Mari[/name_f] + little. I think it is a very pretty name, but I admit I would look twice if the name was on a person not of Japanese descent.

  • ko does mean child in Japanese, but it is a common ending for girl’s names in Japan. Although I think that ko names may not be as popular there as they once were. Its a bit like calling [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], it’s s way of making a name cutesy. It’s pretty but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have Japanese ancestry.
