Jemima for an Australian girl

I know the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] has bad connotations in the U.S but do you think it would work in Australia? What are your thoughts on this name and what would you picture a [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] to be like?

I’m an American, so it’s hard to get past Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], but I think it could work on a free spirited blonde Australian girl.

I’m an Australian [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]! I’m not blonde though :stuck_out_tongue:
I have a lot of American friends, and they’ve always loved my name. I definitely get nothing but compliments here in Australia
I’m obviously very biased, but I really love my name. There are so many possible nicknames, and in my opinion it’s a sweet yet beautiful name. I’ve only met one or two other Jemimas.

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]'s a lovely name, and I think it would work well here in Australia. I mean, a [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] might get a couple ‘Puddleduck’ comments here and there, but that’s not a big deal at all.

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]'s potential nicknames make it more wearable too, I think - [name_u]Jem[/name_u], [name_f]Jemma[/name_f], [name_f]Mim[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f]…etc…

I’m Canadian, so unfortunately the same syrupy connotation exists here. That said, I can definitely look past it and, in fact, I suggested the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] for both my first daughter and the one I have due in 11 days (husband refused.)

I see a sweet, spunky blonde girl (as my girls are/will be).

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the meaning, and potential nicknames ([name_u]Jem[/name_u], [name_f]Mim[/name_f], etc.)

I think [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is lovely. There was a character named [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] on a British TV show I used to watch. I picture her (she was played by [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] Cains) and the little girl from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

And another one, Australian, sadly not a [name_f]Jemima[/name_f].
My reaction would be absolutely positive.
It is a beautiful name.
In comparison maybe, we don’t have a ‘class’ system-
but some names just say intelligent, thoughtful, original and  classy, here [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] would fit that for me.
and a testament from a [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is the best test.

Thanks for your thoughts, anyone else?..

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is fine for an Australian girl- I know two, and they both wear it beautifully!

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would be a nice middle name? (It’s a family name)

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is lovely; very spirited. I might raise an eyebrow a bit if I ran into a little [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] here in the U.S. where it still has not shaken the negative stereotypes attached to it. I think you’re perfectly safe in Australia, though. And who knows - maybe if it catches on overseas, it will one day be usable in the U.S. as well.

I love [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]! My first association is a duck, not a syrup bottle…

I love [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]! My first association is actually a duck, not a syrup… And I’m not Australian, either.

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is lovely! I’m a [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f], myself. People occasionally mention the Puddleduck or the doll from Playschool, but those are the only associations really! I’ve actually been gifted a few [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] Puddleduck things (a couple of mugs and a print) which I kind of love

I’m an AUssie with a friend called [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. The cultural reference here is that doll on Play School called [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. It’s a great name and so under-used.

I think it’s time to reclaim [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] from the racist US stereotypes!!! It is a stunning name, and a big contender if we have another girl (we live in the UK).

I’d never heard of [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] being racist until I joined nameberry, we don’t have the syrup here so I wouldn’t worry. I just think of playschool all the time

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] as an alternative?

I prefer [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] to [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] but like it as a nn. I think [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] sounds a bit more sophisticated than [name_f]Jemma[/name_f].

Since they don’t have the pancake mix there, it’s ok.
