Jemima

We have always loved the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. Its probably the only name of either gender we both love. Its significant to us because of its symbolism of hope being [name_m]Job[/name_m]'s firstborn after his trials. I love it because I grew up reading [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and quite frankly eating waffles with Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] syrup on them. I think it has a beautiful sound to it.

Are we crazy to name our daughter [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]?

We’re waiting till the baby’s born to find out the gender, but I’m convinced its a girl.

I think [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is a beautiful name! Especially with the nicknames [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].

Why would you be crazy to use [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]?? It’s a classic, beautiful name with a whole bunch of good reasons that you’ve already listed for you to use it. I love it!

If you love it and it has some significance to you then go for it!

It’s not appealing to me personally, but it has significance to you and it’s a personally usable name. I’d go for the name that you love, since you seem to. Out of curiosity, you said that it’s the only name you like out of either gender. Have you settled on a boy name if the baby is a boy?

It’s a nice name, but if you live in the US, your child will likely never escape the maple syrup association. If you don’t mind her repeatedly getting “like the syrup?” as a response after she tells someone her name, go for it. In isolation, it is lovely, but I would seriously consider what it might be like having this name in real life before you decide…

I love it! I live in the US and would never use it because of the ‘Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]’ racial stereotype and the syrup. Still, if I heard someone else had used it I would love it!

I absolutely love the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]! And honestly, I think it’s totally usable in the US and wouldn’t worry about it. Syrup is nowhere near the first thing I think of when I hear the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful name and sounds like it has a lot of meaning to you so I would go for it.

I don’t like the name for personal reasons (and the racial stereotype thing) but if YOU love the name, that is all that matters.

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is not a name I would ever use because of the syrup and racial stereotype thing, but that’s just me (in the Midwest US). It sounds like it really means something to you, though.

I don’t think it’s necessarily “crazy” to name a child [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], I just think it may not be ideal, maybe? It’s definitely not the worst name in the world. It all depends on where you live, as well. I would just recommend considering all aspects.

Another user (zpk) suggested an experiment on another thread that I really liked! You could try introducing yourself as [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] to people and see how you feel, or watch their faces and take in their reactions.

If this is something that sounds potentially embarrassing, or if it ends up feeling really right, then you have your answer. Good luck!

I really like it!

It’s a beautiful name.

We haven’t settled on a boy name yet. My favorite is [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u] my husbands favorite is [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]. I just don’t like nn “[name_m]Matt[/name_m]” especially since it’s his Dad and brothers name ([name_m]Matthews[/name_m]) we have some others we kind of like [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] but nothing we both love as much as [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. [name_f]Nor[/name_f] anything with the same significance.
